She played as well as she did against Maria in this event 1 year ago. Everything worked and she is much better shape now (I told you all she needed to lose 15 pounds last year but you all made fun of me saying she was perfectly fine.. :)). If she commits for full year and stays healthy, she will be tough to beat and may join Justine, Maria, Ana for challenge for top position.

I wonder how much, if any, Maria handily beating Justine at the AO helped Serena's confidence (when playing Justine). I haven't seen the Fierce Stomping Diva in a long time. I mean, considering how Serena beat Maria the last 2 times they played, I would think, "If Maria can beat her like this, why can't I?" I know Serena is in great shape right now, and Miami seems to agree with her. Just wondering out loud.

Not sure what they're calling unforced. Sometimes they call it unforced if you get your racquet on it at all. Justine definitely made a lot of forced errors.
The match stats have been weird on the Miami web site. I noticed the other day from one of Venus' matches that she had won 10/12 second serve points but had 5 doubles, so... Just sayin'...
They also said during the coverage that Justine at one point had no backhand winners. I know for a fact she had at least one at that point (the crosscourt backhand when Serena was on her way in to net).
Not sure what to make of it all in terms of the stats. But I don't trust the numbers they're coming up with in Miami.

OK DRY WAS RIGHT I COULD NOT STAY AWAY FROM THE SCOREBOARD! LOL
When Charlie posted that Serena was up 3/0 I took a peek saw it was about to turn with Justine having a point for a 3/3 tie so I disappeared.
Checked it again a while later to see Serena had won the set 6/2 and was up 1/0 in the second.
When I decided to check again she was up 5/0 and then it was over 6/0
WAY TO GO SERENA!!!!!!!!
I lost Justine from my team and now I'm down to 2 but SO WHAT. And thanks Justine for knocking me out of the SP just like at Wimbledon.

I think you right.. I also remember her hitting bh return winner down the line. 3 unforced per game doesn't make a sense at all, given what was going on court and under how much pressure she was on many points.

I have Tursunov/Berdych on AMS TV thinking that FSN would go right to the Fed match on television. I just had to hear Gimelstob pronounce Julien Benneteau's name as Benne-too after Robinson said it correctly as Benne-toe.
Chanda also did the best analysis of Roddick's game I've ever heard a talking head make. Gimelstob turned around and repeated it verbatim. At least he gave Chanda credit for saying it.

I'm betting they counted anything she got her racquet on, which is what they usually do in the official major stats, though those aren't the same stats you see on the air. But if that's their guideline, a good bunch of those errors were actually forced.

As for the UFEs well I hear people cheer them all the time, Davis Cup or not which is unfortunate.

I let it go for Davis Cup because it just happens and people do it... but in regular matches it just creates very bad and uncomfortable atmosphere on the court. Twice this set (and now on break point) Misha double faulted and few in the crowd were going insane... i mean WTH? Show some respect, jeez.

Many of the Serb fans are still a little new to this environment. Over time, they'll get it. The Serbian players, however, need to step up and let their fans know it's not cool--both on the court, and via the Serbian media and general tennis press.
It's unfortunate, though. But this has been documented before, so their opponents need to be ready for it. That's much easier said than done, though. In the heat of battle, any little thing can get to you.
But if yesterday's any indication, Youzhny is going to beat himself up far more than the Serbian crowd.

I was outside for my bio lab digging up soil samples, and knowing that the Serena/Justine match was going on was like torture. I was thinking at the time if Serena lost to Justine again on a fast surface, put the nail in the coffin.
So I was pleased to see score, only wish I could have actually seen the match! Serena has clearly put in some effort to slimming down (as Charlie noted, most noticeably in the prominent return of her chest) and that should make her year a lot easier.
I want to see what's going on with the current matches but I can't get the scoreboard to load. It's just totally blank.

I don't reference a player's size to make fun of them. I've never even used the popular "Fat Dave" nickname.
But an athlete's weight is a very valid discussion. I don't like, say, Ted Robinson cracking jokes about Serena at the US Open 3 years ago. But discussing size and its effects on a player's movement, confidence, energy, etc. is all a solid argument.

Not at all saying it's not relevant, or that it will ever stop. Or that anyone is mean in mentioning, either in the booth or on this board. It's like cotton candy though. A little bit goes a long way. And at this point, my tummy hurts and I'm ready to throw up red white and blue.
And I'm mean to babies. That's got to counteract this high and mighty stance of mine, right? Barbecued or spread on a cracker, babies are good fun!

Last time I checked she is professional athlete right? Therefore her fitness, speed, forehands and backhands should be open to discussion no? It is not like someone is invading her private life, etc.
For example, Maria's serve was laughed at for the duration of last year... I didn't remember too many people having problems with that.. and for a good reason.

An interesting excerpt from the Federer interview today:
Q. When you had mono, did you ever think of Mario Ancic and the fact he missed like six months?
ROGER FEDERER: For some reason I didn't think of him, no, because it was over before it started for me. I heard I had it, and two weeks later they said it was gone.
Q. Did it surprise you it was so short?
ROGER FEDERER: No, because it can be over very quickly. Apparently I already had it back in 2006, hints of it, but...Yeah, so it's in the past.
How long can mono last? Can it be dormant for more than 2 years?

From guga.com
For his farewell tour, Guga intends to play at the Brasil Open, the only ATP event played in the country and where he won the title twice, in 2002 and 20004; the Sony Ericsson Open, in Miami, where he played one of the most exciting matches of his career, losing a tough battle to Pete Sampras in the final, in the year 2000; the Santa Catarina Challenger, an event that will be played in his hometown, so he can say good bye from the courts to his native people; the Monte Carlo Masters Series, where he is a two time winner (1999 and 2001), and either the Masters Series in Rome, or in Hamburg. He lifted the trophy in Italy in 1999 and was a runner-up there in 2000 and 2001 and he was a winner in Germany, in the year 2000. This will all lead him to his second home, Paris, so he can say his final good bye.
While he practices hard, with long time coach Larri Passos, in Santa Catarina, Guga is already looking into his future without the commitments of a professional player. He is looking forward into dedicating time to this Institute, Instituto Guga Kuerten, helping develop Brazilian Tennis and also spending a lot of time on the surfboard.
Guga intends to play the following tournaments:
11/02 – Brasil Open / Costa do Sauípe (ATP) –
24/03 – Sony Ericsson Open / Miami (Masters Series ) –
14/04 – Aberto de Santa Catarina / Florianópolis (Challenger)
21/04 – Masters Series Monte Carlo –

1) Surprise of the day - realizing Mathieu was still in this tournament (not anymore, though)
2) Was Mikhail (mentally) stable in the Tipsarevic match? Didn't expect him to win, but going from in-control to bageled doesn't bode well.
3) Stupid Berdych, no, make that stupid Tursunov messed up my SP plans. Not to mention Igor's semifinals chances.
4) Serena, let's make a bargain. You can win Miami, but then you have to go away for the rest of the year. How about it? Wasn't 2007 fun?

I still don't think she's ever a threat to win tournaments, but she can beat some people I think she shouldn't.
To win any tournaments? I can only come up with 3-4 player who are at their best are better than her but that's it. She is in pretty good company up there.

Losing in straights, that's what she's doing. :(

Based on talent and the amount of tournaments played, Sveta should be #1.

She did win this one two years ago, but then something happened and she stopped doing it. Some people think it all started with her loss to Ana in the final of German Open last year (third set tiebreak) :)
Let's go Sveta, Let's go! Clap, clap! :)

The only tournament I remember her winning in the last year or so is New Haven, which was like all injury pullouts for her, and had a pretty weak field to begin with.
I don't ever see her in a draw and think "she could win this," and certainly not "this is her's to lose," which is rare for someone whose been in the top five or so for as long as she has now.
I'll bet you a TAT thong she doesnt win this tournament.

Her record in finals has been terrible lately, but I feel like someone who made three tier I finals and a grand slam final last year is a threat at big tournaments. And before she forgot that the week doesn't end after the semis she did win the US Open ('04) and Miami ('06)
Sveta!! and she finished with a winner! :)
Very solid match from her.

Too bad Mario couldn't do it... Kolya should have lost to Gulbis last week

Except congrats to Sveta and her fans.
Done here for the night. If Venus doesn't give a shit, why should I?

Regardless of whether she wins or not, I think making the semis makes her someone who "could win" it.
I rarely see Jankovic in a draw and think it's hers to lose.
Why would you want ANOTHER thong? That's such a meaningless bet for you. :p

Sveta :)
Sorry, Venus fans.
OK, Davydenko's played a much better match and had way more winners, so I guess he deserves it, but :(:(:(
I'm glad I watched this not the women's match, though (although it's only because the Russians messed up the OOP and thought the women's match hadn't started yet )

And she won those in very dominant fashion as far as I remember. She crushed Maria in final in 06 that was one of the best performances of the year.
She is capable of winning big ones... its just she has these mental issues at times.

6-4 6-3 I think (maybe the other way around). Maria never really had a chance, though. Sveta served insanely well.
Ancic/Davydenko are at 5-5 gang. They've broken four straight times now, I think.

Davydenko missed a very easy sitter bh at net at 15-all, and it all went downhill from there. Doubled on bp.
I congratulated him too early.

Try going with Canas and Davenport to the end (with Henin as a runner up).

So it's Serena vs. Sveta for the Title right to play in the final. As much as I love Jelena, and as happy as I am for Bepa's comeback, I think the top half of the draw has it all over the bottom.

Man I hope Sveta wins if she beats Serena. At this point I would rather have her lose in the semis than the final.
Serena was raging today, though. She might be unstoppable. Then again, she could also turn her brain off after a great win (has she been hanging out with Lindsay?), so who knows?

To be honest, Charlie, I would like to believe that the win today only served to remind the Fierce Stomping Diva that the WTA remains hers for the taking, if she cares to do so. I think she's still capable of winning anything she enters, if she stays healthy, and maintains her fitness. And stays hungry like she was today.
Good job Kolya. Mario, great fight too. Top 15 is not too far if you keep playing this way.

Still have a shot at doing well in the men's, but Davydenko could dick me over yet.
