They've wanted to go to basketball for 37 minutes.

I knew if the match cut into that window we'd miss the trophy presentation. Which from these two, should have been an equally riotous affair.

That was highly entertaining.

And the whole point of prolonging the mess was so they'd make an even 100 UEs. (Serena won there too 56-44)

They both should have been out to Arvidsson and Pennetta anyway.

Was Jelena smiling?

She's smiling now during the trophy ceremony

"I thought maybe she'd be nice to me again and let me come back to 5-All"

Then she went on to praise Serena and said "she's better than me" several times.

And then she pretended the trophy is too heavy.

I'm bummed that it started at 9 in the effing morning, and that for some reason TiVo didn't record it, so all I saw were the last two games. But congrats to Serena and her rack (although I was secretly hoping for a Jelena upset).

I know bout freaking time I was not happy she could not serve it out even up 40/0 but I'm sure she's still happy in some sense to win.

Watch the trophy presentation on SE WTA website nice overall. Jelena always gives her opponent credit, and I like that about her but I wish she would lose the drama (injury timeout etc).

Yeah, I don't think many of Jelena's opponents laugh with her on court. I'm sure she is fun to hang around with off court, but her laughing on court must be kind of annoying to most opponents. I don't remember her enjoying herself too much during the Paszek match...

ROFL now she did not suck up but she did give her some credit. Honestly though Jelena should have lost the match in two sets anyway so I guess Serena felt it was more her undoing than Jelena magical comeback which I agree to, to some extent.

Debating what was worse...that Jelena was obviously overmatched and still in it, or how much Serena was choking. Did Jelena really save any of those 6-7 match points, or did Serena have an error/double fault on every one?

Whether or not it was good tennis....it was interesting at least.

I think it's interesting how Jelena's injury time out was questioned so much today but TATers.

I think there's a little bit of a double standard here. Why wasn't she given the benefit of doubt when other players have been?

You've heard of crying wolf, haven't you?

She doesn't deserve the benefit of any doubt because one never doubts she's going to take an injury timeout when her back is against the wall.

I don't think it was that she took it - she was very clearly sick. It's the timing. Even the trainer questioned why she didn't take the 10 minute break between sets (heat rule allowance) if she were so sick as to call for the trainer a game later

My view on Jelena's injury timeouts is that she has a low threshhold for pain, and enjoys taking advantage of having a job where she gets free, immediate, on-site health care.

To those who say that Davydenko cannot win against Federer because he respects his game too much, here is an excerpt from Kolya's press conference before the final:

Q. Obviously you're playing at the very top of your form. You're peaking just at the right moment. If you carry this good form into the final against Nadal, do you feel you have a very good chance there?

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO: I don't know anymore. I really ‑‑ like, he's physically so fit. It's amazing, because I saw he play in 1:00, you know, like super hot. And for him I think he don't care, you know, playing night session or day session. He running so much. You know, he fighting. I don't know what I can do. I remember against him in Rome played three sets three hours, and I was completely dead. (laughter.) He was also tired, but in last points, you know, last game, I don't know how he find, you know, his power, hitting his balls. You know, I have no chance already. Then this time ‑‑ that's was I was thinking how Djokovic beat him in Indian Wells so easy. Maybe I need to ask Djokovic how he can beat Nadal.

Ha! Now he just needs to ask Mardy Fish what he did, and he should kick Roger's ass the next time they play.

I think this shows that a player's reputation really does matter. Nikolay was ready to say Rafa was completely unbeatable, but having an example of how to beat him gave Nikolay some confidence.

Can Kolya make it BIG 4 now? There is obviously Roger, Novak and Rafa as they separated themselves from the rest overall... but can this result help Kolya become part of that group? He has been getting to semis and 1/4 of US Open, RG and AO on consistent basis but couldn't quite make the push to reach final yet. I think he will be dangerous toward later stages of clay court season (he tends to find his form only after few events on clay... although DC practice and prep will help his cause for Monte Carlo)

What I was trying to say is that we have no right to think that a player doesn't try his best against somebody based on what he says in press conferences. You could genuinely admire somebody and still try to beat him down when he plays against you. Like Rafa, for example.

Davydenko won Paris in 2006. Federer and Nadal weren't there, but he pretty much dominated everyone. The final was best 3 of 5, and he embarassed Hrbaty something like 6-1 6-2 6-2.

Before this, I had no idea he had such a great record in finals. Now it's 12-3. It's the second best percentage, and best of active players.

If Davydenko could consistently play this level of tennis- I'd become a fan. Particularly with all the ridiculous crap that he's been put through. Davydenko was extremely impressive today. Big congrats to all of his fans. He sure looked like the real deal today.

Still, just to say this once again (and it won't be for the last time)- don't go crazy over an Ericsson Open win, folks. Sure, it's potentially a big step. But, it ain't THAT level of a big step, yet, until he plays like this in a Slam final. Five minutes ago, I thought that Nalbandian and Ferrer were sure Any-Minute-Now Slam winners.....I will also say, though, that, of these three (or any Flavor-Of-The-Moment player of your choice), I'd be most likely to think that Davydenko could take a Slam. Very consistent results, lots of options with his game....if he keeps that serve bulked up.....Now, if Rog and Nadal can get their acts together- IMO that closes the door to the rest. BUT- the way those two have been looking (and note to the Nadal boosters- the way that he has been losing his matches this year is just a REAL bad sign- so many hang-dog looks, not much fight at the end of too many of his losses).....Well, as much as of course I want Rog back playing the way that he can.....I will also say that, I'd be fascinated to see what kind of hot mess a Slam final would be if two newbies make the final.....

My biggest regret about the end of Miami is that it brings an end to the wonderful Spring Hardcourt Swing. It's been so awesome having everyone here in the States for the past month. I adore this 4 week stretch on the calendar. Always have, and lately it has been sweeter and sweeter.

And now everyone starts to leave. Oh yeah, we get green clay keeping some of the ladies around for a while, and we get a couple of events (like Houston) for the men. But, it won;t be the same.
