You're pretty much right, but you may be forgetting about the bonus points from when we guessed the final two. Those could make a big difference.

Nope! It's actually not that uncommon to get knocked out without having been in the bottom three. Being in the bottom three gets you some attention, and lets fans know they have to vote for you to keep you in. A number of Idols have used several weeks in the bottom three to propel them farther than anyone would have guessed. First season's third place finisher Nikki McKibben was in the bottom two or three multiple times, as was second season's third place finisher Kimberly Locke. Being in the bottom three actually helps you!

Now it'll be uncommon though, because only Michael Johns and the two Davids have avoided the bottom three. The other five have all been there.
