for business!

Oh the joy - played just right, you could spend almost a month in here. And given the names that you will have to choose from on Day 1 (have you looked at qualies?) for the Pacific Life Open, there's a good chance many people will be looking for a stool starting Wednesday.

We'll have a few days of live coverage from the Indian Wells Tennis Garden starting this coming weekend, so be sure to stop by often.

I was looking through the 2007 PLO@IW (BTW, all credit to our Scotty for the ingenious shorthand for The Pacific Life Open at Indian Wells), and it seems that Wozniacki was also among the two most popular picks for Day 1 in 2007, if you believe in omens.

Then again, if we believed in omens, Tatiana Golovin would never be picked again in an SP.

Ms. Pironkova has requested Beyonce's "Irreplaceable" and to be played on the jukebox for Moose.

"You must not know 'bout me, you must not know 'bout me..."

Destiny's Child's "Survivor" was also considered but deemed too good for the Jukebox since it featured more than just Ms. Knowles

Pironkova's father's name is Kiril, which I am wondering if it might be a Bulgarian derivation of my own first name.

Not that her father and me sharing a name is going to spare her from being tripped as she walks out onto the court for her 2nd round match on Friday.

Sorry, no. Karl/Charles is teutonic/Norse, Cyril/Kyril is of Greek origin.

The Slavic equivalent for your name is Karol, although I don't think it's used in Bulgaria. But the word for "king" in a lot of Slavic countries is derived from it, so you can technically claim to have given a name to Evgeny Korolev :)

Nelslus probably still blames me for Donald's loss to Feliciano at the U.S. Open. He was rooting for Donald, and I was rooting loudly for Feliciano is my best Spanish because I had picked him for the suicide pool that day. We were watching the fourth set tiebreaker, and they were back on serve, and I said to nelslus, about Young, "You'd think that the occassion would get to him."

Donald immediately double-faulted, and I was really relieved that nelslus didn't have a frying pan in his hand.

I want to have sympathy for poor Moose. I really do.

But, Moose: You truly have no one but yourself to blame.

For the sake of all of the angels in Heaven- did you not learn in IW that even thinking of the names of Craybas or Arn, much less daring to write or speak Those Names out loud can do nothing but upset the balance of nature? Were the hounds with blood pooling from their fangs while baying at the moon and scratching at your door not enough of a sign NOT to go there? Failing in the Suicide Pool is now the least of your worries, Moose, my friend. The Furies Jill & Greta will suck up your soul if you let them.

I think she can afford to buy us a few cold beverages. After all, Jill has been collecting Social Security since 1932. Her Social Security number is 3.

You have a point there :hyst: :hyst:

Still, I think y'all have made Jill depressed with all this talk of her being so old...;)

After her loss today, she spent her day staring out the window. She's still doing it, now, actually......

Thanks to Ekaterina Makarova (and Robin Haase), I'm double-cheeked! Have I mentioned how much I hate cats/Kats?

Half-cheeked thanks to Haase, who's been winning all season until I pick him in a suicide pool. Guess I should have gone with the frenchman, Mahut, after all.

is it just me or have these two practice SP (IW/SE) been even tougher than the real ones? I mean, all this carnage in the first rounds because there are no reasonable low enough seeds to pick but not high enough to worry they will pull a Tsonga into a final...
if this continues, by the time RG arrives we may at best get to a third round. If we pick Rafa, Justine, Roger, Ana and such. Otherwise...

Hi all. Just popping in for a second. I thought I was joining you for a round of drinks, but I just checked my pick and it was NOT Hyung Taik-Lee (or Marat Safin). Looks like I came up with a better (luckier) choice before I pressed enter. Thank you Janko. But ... my WTA pick hasn't played yet. And is the live scoreboard not working? (I see results, but not matches in progress.)

New rule for suicide pools: Never trust anyone who would wear black nail polish!!

You might want to confine that to women, Martini. Malisse wore black nail polish back in his Capriati days, and he's the closest thing I have ever found to a sure bet in SPs.

Awesome photo, thanks GV!

Daveed clearly prefers lower body to upper body workouts. Not that there is anything wrong with his upper body. But his legs are so well developed, and the cuts so clearly defined, that his upper body seems puny in comparison. That's oppositr of just about 99% of all men, who think if they have a big chest and huge guns, that no one will notice that their legs look like a chicken's.

I always look for her when a draw comes out and there's a pool to figure out if/when I can use her. I should stop telling my secrets.

Meanwhile, there are serious troubles brewing in the men's pool. The Andreev and Ferrero bandwagons are through with no sweat at all. That's a really, really bad omen for the seven of us who took Canas. :(

At least you went down to someone who actually had a chance to win her match... Unlike Shvedova. I still haven't the faintest clue as to what I was thinking when I went there.

I looked at the matchups for tomorrow. Could be dicey stuff for those who are serious about beating the draw. All kinds of potential pitfalls... Some for tomorrow, and some for later on in the event.

Srebotnik is definitely on my SPARS team (Suicide Pool All Reliable Stars). A few others:

Sugiyama (didn't go with her yesterday and got burned)
Thomas Johansson (almost always wins a round or two)
Malisse (I've only used him a couple of times, but I know Moose has a good record with him)

Aravane Rezai, on the other hand, does NOT play on this team. Nor does Tati, Kristof Vliegen, and a few others who I can't think of right now.
