20 Questions, AO 2008

h. Agnieszka Radwanska

She's Polish, which doesn't count as Former Soviet. Options for that include Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, Uzbekistan, and some others (although (I think) I named all the relevant ones).

If you have time, give the ones you skipped a shot...you can always just steal your favorite answers from ones already given ;)

Thanks for playing!

By your rule that it works for Dementieva - you count the "I" because it's there Va-I-Di-So-Va

Yeah, but unlike De-men-ti-eh-va, I've never heard anyone pronounce it that way...

Tell ya what, if you can find a YouTube clip of someone saying it that way, I will not only let it go, I'll try to find a DVD of Voskoboeva d. Ondraskova for you...deal?

Well, it's incredibly wrong to pronounce Dementieva that way too, so I don't see how that's what we are going by. I thought you were counting Dementieva because, on paper, there is a vowel in the spelling and syntactically, it's 5 syllables, not because some commentators have trouble with Eastern European names (check the correct pronunciation of Vaidisova for an example).

Would you count Parmentier as 3 or 4 syllables?

If you are sticking with not counting, just sign me up for Daniilidou in protest.

Parmentier is four...as is Daniilidou...

As an onDRASHkova fan, I know about the Vaidisova pronounciation.

What I said before in the Questions thread was that I would accept the correct pronunciation and very common mispronounciations, which I have to stick to. I just feel like letting this one go would set a bad precedent. I don't want people trying to put Will-i-am-z or other stretches. Sorry :(

Yeah, I realize that's the correct pronounciation, but I can't disallow it for the people who put it, because I already said I'd let it stand.

Here's what I'll do: If Dementieva outlasts all the other 5+ syllable players (or ties them), the Dementieva pickers will get points, as will whoever has the second most wins.

Sound fair?

That's fair. Who would think that we'd be arguing over name pronunciations! Shows you how TATers are really into your contests!:)

You don't need to put ties... Just pick which ever one you're most confident in and go with that. If, say, Djokovic and Ivanovic both are the last Serbs, losing in the quarterfinals, you would get credit for either answer.

As it is now, I'll take the ones you put first: Djokovic, Melzer, Arvidsson, and Rochus. If you want to change those, you can just edit your post :)

And thanks for playing :cheesy:

That's a good choice. They can't use Mariana Alves... I saw shtexas picked her and probably a few others did, too. If she can't get it right in the cool New York night air, how can she be expected to do a competent job in the Aussie heat?

Oh, I was going to ask a few questions; forgive me if they've been asked already but I'm too lazy to go look.

Is Dementieva 5 syllables (De-men-cha-va or De-men-ti-e-va)?
And is Williams 2 or 3 syllables (Will-yums or Will-i-ams)?

That's a good choice. They can't use Mariana Alves... I saw shtexas picked her and probably a few others did, too. If she can't get it right in the cool New York night air, how can she be expected to do a competent job in the Aussie heat?

Oh, I was going to ask a few questions; forgive me if they've been asked already but I'm too lazy to go look.

Is Dementieva 5 syllables (De-men-cha-va or De-men-ti-e-va)?
And is Williams 2 or 3 syllables (Will-yums or Will-i-ams)?

Dry

Williams is 2. Dementieva is...complicated ;) But it works for either 4 or 5. Although the way I'm going to score it, you'll get points for Anabel if Elena is the only other 5+er to beat her, so your odds may be better not going with her...

Thanks, salmon. Then I'm going to change my two-syllable selection since I can double my chances. ;)

Good ol' Alves has been quietly (well, not so quietly here on TaT, but elsewhere...) working her way back into high-profile matches. God help us should she actually chair a GS final.

Dementieva is 4 syllables for the same reason Williams is 2 syllables. Those little i's don't make the grade as a full grown syllable. It's like a dipthong, or the opposite of a dipthong, or something.

The Dementieva question.

The 2008 Official Guide to Professional Tennis lists the pronunciation as:

It's not diphthongs, per se (Vai-disova is though), but it's i's that would be represented phonetically as y's (or j's), that aren't really serving as vowels before the following vowel. And with Dementieva it's a problem translating from Cyrillic, largely.
