I see a thread for all other sports, but not college basketball, so I thought I'd start one. Discuss!

I'll start by saying--Duke 6-0!

Oh I see, a couple of ACC basketball fans eh? Well, you guys are happy campers come basketball season, I'm sure! I live and die with the Buckeyes and the Big Ten. The Buckeyes looked good this year until they were completely demolished by TX A&M. They should have a decent year though. We've replaced Oden with a big moose named Koufos. Who needs Greg when you have a Kosta!

GO BUCKEYES!

Wow, put those two records together, and you have the scoreline of a Venus/Zuzana match, in which Zuzu retires from embarrassment in the second set.

Actually, Venus has gotten to share the court with Zuzana twice in her career, and each time Venus LOST five games.

Duke is very overrated. Coach K is a great coach but the media just treat them like they are the almighty team but there are other teams that have way more wins than Duke

Spoken like a true Duke hata! ;) Duke is not overrated this year--only one point and a last second shot from Pitt have kept them from an 18-0 start.

Media picks them to win every year but they have failed since Battier led them to the crown. VCU rallied to beat them in the NCAA tourney last year.
Duke can go 31-1 but when March madness arrives, they will not make the Final Four.

Well, that's true of almost any school. And with the one and done format, who can make that call this early in the season?

When March Madness arrives, I sign up for a lot of pools. Lucked up one year and won $$$ thanks to UNC out of that overrated conference.

UNC was without Lawson last night and their guards could not hit the side of the barn while Duke was great from 3 last night; therefore, Duke validated their number 2 ranking but wait until early March when they play the rematch at Cameron.

Duke 77, Maryland 65

Saw the game last night from midway in the first half and Maryland had no answer for Singler(sp ???). Cameron crazies were in effect last night. One of the Maryland players was jawing with the crowd to the point that an official had a talk with the Maryland player.

Duke should not lose until they play UNC in March or the ACC tournament.

The Dukies are always good for a midseason swoon. When I actually turned the game off they were down by 20, so they nearly staged a rally. They will be fine.

No matter how many years I follow CBB, I'll never understand this arbitrary ranking system. I understand that Tennessee beat Memphis, but they still have two losses to one for Memphis, yet Tennessee gets a unanimous #1? And somehow, UNC sneaks in for the number 2 spot, also with two losses.

ptmcmahon
02-26-2008, 05:03 AM
Not having followed all year, I can see why Tennessee gets number 1...would you keep Memphis ahead of them after they lost to Tennessee? I have no problem with this ranking myself. The argument for is not all losses created equal - just like in tennis winning 3 and losing 1 at a Tier 3 event is a lot less impressive then at a Tier 1 event. You can't simply rank team by # of losses - otherwise we'd need no ranking anyways!

The argument against is the same as all college rankings - very much what have you done for me lately...recent results more important. If the AP was voting on tennis rankings, Djoko and Sharapova would have been #1 after AO.

Also, where do you see UNC as #2? I only looked at the AP poll, and Memphis is still #2 there...

As we all know, rankings mean absolutely nothing when March Madness start. All it matters is a team winning 6 games in a row to lift the title.

I can see putting Tennessee on top, but unanimously? I think it should at least be closer. Memphis only lost by 4 points.

Well, that number one didn't last long. I feel a little vindicated.

Knew they would lose to Vanderbilt for 3 reasons:
(1) Road game in SEC play.
(2) Emotional win over Memphis 3 days ago and no time to recuperate
(3) Vandy got their rear ends kicked in Knoxville earlier

Now, who is going to be number 1? Memphis? Then again, these rankings mean absolutely nothing when March Madness begins.

patrick
03-08-2008, 08:07 PM
(1) North Carolina 76 (5) Duke 68.

Duke led 68-66 with 5:43 to go until UNC scored the last 10 points to win the ACC regular season title and probably the number 1 seed in the East no matter what happens in the ACC tournament.

Great question... Tennessee has got to be the leading candidate for the last 1 seed but with the big conference tournaments coming up, I think that will change.

They actually led with 3:30 left to go, until Gerald Henderson stupidly tried to break through three Carolina players and go to the basket, but instead tripped over his feet and got the ball stripped from him. Both he and DeMarcus Nelson were ball hogs throughout the entire game, forcing shots that weren't there, which is ultimately what cost them the game.

The fourth one is still up for grabs...I think the short list is

1Tennessee if the win the SEC tournament,
2 Kansas if they win the Big 12 tournament
3 Duke if they win the ACC tournament

I became a Duke fan in the Bobby Hurley days but in my heart I know this team can't go very far. No post presence and total reliance on outside shooting = march doom. I did a bracket at the "four letter" website and have UCLA winning over Kansas. Anyone else do brackets? Any cinderella stories this year?

seems to be a lack of cinderellas already. Maybe Michael Beasley can carry K-State for a good run.

we have a little contest here on TAT--8 of us are doing it on cbssportsline.

Even though they got blasted early and late in the game, they made it further than a school that is within 10 miles of them. But, in the end, no title except for the winner of Kansas/Memphis.
