I have a random suggestion. Not sure if this is something that would be able to be applied, but I thought it would be cool if at the end of the recent posts bar there would be a "more unread posts" link somewhere. For some reason, lately, I keep instinctively looking down thinking there's a link that says that when, in reality, I should know otherwise. Just thought I'd share a thought ;)
random suggestion done. ;) lol

That's a good suggestion, Jessie. But not easily done.

Have you clicked on "New Posts" in the top navigation bar. That will show threads that have posts in them that you haven't read. And it puts them in order -- newest first.

I think that will do exactly what you're looking for.

Jessie, I don't believe that that's plausible (although Kirkus is the authority on that).

In the meantime, the 'new posts' link in the toolbar also serves that function, showing all the threads where posts you haven't read yet were made. It allows you to go to the very last post or the last post you hadn't read in said thread.

If you want to find more posts from a specific poster, you can click on his or her name and some options will pop up (like 'PM this poster'). You can click 'Find more posts from ______' and all the posts he or she has made recently will pop up. Is that what you were thinking of???

I gotta say that the New Posts feature is awesome! I don't even use the thread areas any more. I log in, click New Posts, scroll down until I find the boundary for the posts that were updated since my last login, then work my way upward through those posts.

Normally I login only once a day, at night after I get home from work. New Posts gives me an easy way to see what's been posted in the last 24 hours. IMHO, this is the single biggest improvement with the new site. Kudos.

Say, as a big fan of TATchat, could we add another link to enter chat that's near the bottom of the home page, near the list of who's in TATchat?

I know, I know, I can scroll back up to the top of the page, and join there. And I do. I just thought it might lure a few more fun people into our little realm.

That's all a TAT cookie does is keep you logged in. If, rather than just closing the window that TAT is in or quitting your browser, you were to click on the "Log Out" link (top right) your TAT cookie is cleared and you'd have to log in next time you visit. That's all it does is keep you logged in.

What kind of "freezing" are you experiencing?

A FREEZE-UP takes place both when I am in a forum, or when I post to a forum to then exit to another forum--THIS IS PROBABLY WHEN IT HAPPENS MOST OFTEN--AFTER I MAKE A POST IN A FORUM OR THREAD, THEN GO BACK TO THE MAIN MENU PAGE--THEN TRY TO FIND ANOTHER FORUM I LIKE TO READ OR POST TO-- SO IT IS MOST LIKELY WHEN I TRY TO CHANGE TO A NEW FORUM AFTER LEAVING THE ONE I JUST READ OR POSTED TO (USUALLY POSTED TO, NOT JUST READ)-- SO I FIND MYSELF ON THE MAIN MENU PAGE AND EVERYTHING IS JUST FROZEN--I KNOW BECAUSE I TRY TO NAVIGATE TO VARIOUS THINGS, AND EVERYTHING IS JUST FROZEN.

And to fix the situation, I start over, delete all cookies, log out from the internet, then log back into the internet, and then log onto the board. This is how I fix the freeze-up situation.

Thanks for asking and trying to help.:)

That´s very strange, Gabriel. Do you experience this on any other sites?
By "forum," you mean sections like "Talk about tennis" or "Talk about Other Stuff" not individual threads, right? How often does it freeze up?

What browser are you using? Internet explorer?

Do other sites work for you while TAT is "frozen?" (If you have them open in a separate window or tab?)

Gabriel
11-10-2007, 09:38 AM
All your questions are good "troubleshooting" sort of questions.

But the main point is that I don't know what is wrong, and it is not possible for you to fix it from a remote location.

By essentially starting over, it seems to help.

I don't think it is my browser or ISP. I think it is the board.

I'll have to more carefully document what is happening if I really want to convey specifically what happens, when and where.

Bump!

If someone is willing to take that on as a supplemental component of the contest, and willing to dedicate himself/herself to running such a model, I'm sure the staff would consider it. But I'm not sure how it would work. The majors are double points. There are weeks when there are 6 tournaments. If someone is prone to miss any of those weeks, they're probably still screwed under such a model. It also opens the door for some participants to only be familiar with, say, fast court specialists and ignore the clay season altogether... yet still potentially do well overall even though the weeks they participated was somewhat skewed.

We don't have the resources to do it the way you suggest at this point. It could potentially take even more work than the current system. It's a year-long contest, and as I see it, it's a contest that should reward those who are willing to make the commitment week in and week out, and make the contest a priority. If someone can't make that commitment, there are other, shorter-term contests on TAT that don't require as much commitment.

I guess I was thinking more of something where maybe your bottom 5 weeks didn't count in your score. It wouldn't have to be calculated until towards the end of the year. I was just thinking that that way it would be okay to miss a week or two.

It wouldn't be complex like a 'best 17 tournaments' (or whatever the tours do). It would be 'best 37 tournaments' (or whatever).

I would be willing to calculate it.

I do want to be clear here, though, that I'm not trying to step on any toes. I think the predictions contest is a very fun and wonderfully run game.

But then one wouldn't know where they stand in the contest until the end of the year.

And you wouldn't be able to do it by weeks, because there are weeks with slams or 6 tourneys and there are weeks with 1. You'd have to do it by tournaments to be fair, which would mean the scores would have to be kept by tournaments, as well as weeks, which is a lot more complex. Besides, it really wouldn't affect anything much if the lowest few tournament scores were dropped for everyone.

In fact, it'd hurt people who picked every tournament, wouldn't it? Because, while others would be losing "0" scores, they'd be losing actual point scores.

Yes it would. The point was to have missing a week not cripple anyone. I think you could do it by week. The 6 tournament weeks have always been and will remain more important.

You would know where you were in the competition, but the last five weeks of the year there wouldn't be a huge amount of points to gain if you had played every week. It would give people who had missed or had a bad week a chance to catch up, which I think would be more climactic.

I do, however, realize that it is probable that I am the only one who this makes sense to, so I am not going to push it anymore. As I said before, the contest is perfectly fine how it is. I just think it's too bad that missing a week can really screw you over, because it doesn't in real tennis. Oh well, though.

I think this is the one contest which rewards consistency, rather than having a few good weeks throughout the year.

Also it is one of the harder contests to run, because it requires a weekly commitment from the contest admins, so I think making it any more complicated to score than it is already really isn't an option at the moment...

Well, I've long since given up any hope of this change happening, or fully being considered, to be honest, but I'll respond anyway.

The statement "having a few good weeks throughout the year" is an extreme exaggeration. We're talking about having the top 37 (or whatever) weeks out of 42 (or whatever), not your top 8 weeks (or whatever :)).

One of the things we've talked about on TAT while discussing how many tournaments should be averaged to make up the pro ranking is quality of play vs. quantity of play. Who should be ranked higher: people who show up some of the time and win a lot, or people who show up all of the time and don't win so much? I think the current pro system is a happy medium, and I think it would be more interesting if TAT took a very small step towards the middle.

I don't believe that the current system rewards consistency more than a system where we eliminated the bottom 5 weeks. I believe that it simply rewards the players with the ability to never miss a week. I think it hurts players who enjoy the game, and play well, but might miss a week or two in the year because of thier schedules.

As I said earlier, I would be willing to figure out the rankings so it would NOT make it harder for the staff running the contest.

In closing, I just want to say that I thoroughly enjoy this competition, and am not trying to criticize it. Think of it as putting a roof on Wimbledon's center court. It's a wonderful organization with a long tradition, but a small change might add some new flavor to it.

Also, at this point I've realized that this suggestion has not particularly been taken well, and I withdraw it from any further consideration. I just felt like making some points.

I'm very glad to hear that. Only having access to this thread gave me an incorrect view that my suggestion received a quick no and little consideration. Thank you for clearing it up. Please know that while I did feel a little blown off it was because I was missing out on the majority of the discussion, not because my suggestion wasn't immediately inacted.

I'm sorry if you felt blown off, Charlie. Just wanted to let you know that I'm still mulling over how such a model could work and still be fair. I'm struggling with the "weeks" issue because the weeks are made up of a variety of tournaments (sometimes one, sometimes six, sometimes including Davis Cup or Fed Cup, sometimes a major). So I and others are still thinking it over. Please be assured of that.

In the meantime, it might be a good idea to tap someone who could make predictions/post predictions for you if you're going to miss a week. I have this relationship with Moose, and several people in the past have asked me to do this for them (though I once forgot to do this for someone when asked to, I felt awful). It may not be ideal, but it's better than a zero.

And on a another meanwhile, we'll keep thinking about your suggestion and how it could work.

In the Arcade, would it be possible/feasible/desirable to have the "high-scorer" be the person who scored the high score last. In some games (e.g. solitaire, disco bowling, yahtzee, older golf, archery) it seems like there's only so many points you can possibly score (in bowling, it's pretty concrete). Would it be more interesting if the person who gets the score first each month would be made, more or less, to "prove it" if another person ties that score? Just something zipping through my head as I realized dry has had Disco Bowling locked up for the month since over a week ago :overhead_clap:.

I think we're going to keep it this way Mr. Salmon. On short posts, this keeps the signature at the bottom rather than bunching it up under the post. Plus the line that goes all the way across the post just looks better.

I have a random question.

Where it says on the bottom of the front page, "Most users ever online was.." I see members' names and then I see two unusual names Yahoo! Slurp (4), Google (1). What do those two names mean? I'm just curious.

And is there any way we can put our screen names on invisible mode?

Thanks.

The Yahoo! slurpies and all things Google are the bots those companies use to index websites. If it shows Yahoo! (4) that means four of their little workers were checking us out. Little horrors :p ;) As for invisibility mode: no, that is not an option.

I noticed that sometimes the member count be more than the names listed (example- 10 members but only see 9 names). Why

TAT staff can be logged in but not show up in the list. Often times we do that when performing maintenance or posting articles, or other non-forum tasks. :)

I had just posted the following in the Smarty Jones thread, then deleted it to honor the request/intention in that thread now.....so, I'll post this thought here instead:

Re: the deleting posts in the Smarty Jones thread.....Could we perhaps instead have started another thread for the contest itself, asking folks not to post any flippant comments in the new thread- as has been done before?

I'm just not that big on deleting posts here in TAT-land is all- at least to avoid doing so whenever possible. Just my two cents worth here is all.

We agree with you, nelslus. We're not in the habbit of deleting posts and we're definitely not about the go in another direction.

We requested some changes be made to the contest thread, which was done wonderfully quick. After that the now removed posts seemed completely random yet still left the door open for more questionable offtopic convo about Chris Evert. For that reason, they were removed from what was supposed to be a contest thread only.

Leaving the posts in question to form a new thread wich sole purpose would have been to take digs at Chris Evert simply did not seem called for. I hope you can agree with that.

Is it possible to change the TAT software so that it automatically adds the high-quality option (i.e., appends "&fmt=18" to the url) when displaying youtube videos?

It probably is, rabbit. But our friends who might still be on dial-up would have a difficult time with them.

OK, makes sense :) Maybe it could be an option in your profile? I suggested this because seeing the ball on a clay court surface is really hard without the high-quality option. But yeah, this is not a very high-priority thing.

Perhaps a know-it-all could start a thread and explain how to embed youtube videos, and any other tricks that some of us are clueless about.

We've actually started several projects like that, Charlie. And they always get side-tracked by something that seems a little higher in priority.

Our FAQ is customizable, and I've had plans to flesh it out for several years now... but it always gets moved to the back burner.

We'll make it a point to get this done sooner rather than later.

Oh no rush. I just realized that there is a large range of how many options TATers are able to exercise. It took me a while to figure out the strikethrough, but I am still helpless when it comes to Youtube videos. I'm sure there are people who don't know how to do others things, like find unusual smileys, for instance.

OK, to post a video:

use the "Post reply" button, NOT the "quick reply" box.
type whatever text you want to introduce your video
click on the icon above your post box that looks like a film strip and has a red ? on it
you'll get a pop-up box. Type the TITLE you want for your video
then your post will have tags in it that look kinda like "MEDIA][/MEDIA "
BETWEEN the tags, enter the ID# ONLY of the video you want. (On YouTube.com, this is the string of letters/numbers after "v=")
click "preview post" and see if everything looks good, then post!

I'm sure there are people who don't know how to do others things, like find unusual smileys, for instance.

I get my smilies here (http://groups.msn.com/AnimationsSmilies).

Click on the categories on the left hand side and find a smilie you like -

Right click,
Save picture as (save it to Desktop so it's easy to find)

Then at TAT, click on User CP, (Top Left)
then on My Smilies (right down the bottom on the left).
In the Add Smilie section, name your smilie (anything you like),
then Browse your Desktop for the saved smilie
then click add smilie.

Some of the animated ones don't always work - I'm guessing this is because their file size is too big.

Thread subscriptions are "off" by default. If you subscribe to a thread, you'll receive an email whenever a new post is made in that thread since your last visit. It's a good way to keep on top of a thread that you find important or interesting.

Here's an excellent set of instructions for embedding videos by Oploskoffie

How to embed a video

Step 1: Create a new post/reply to a thread ;)

http://www.talkabouttennis.com/images/howto/Embedvideo/step1.jpg

Step 2: Click the media button

http://www.talkabouttennis.com/images/howto/Embedvideo/step2.jpg

Step 3: A popup will appear. Enter the name of your video. Press "OK".

http://www.talkabouttennis.com/images/howto/Embedvideo/step3.jpg

Step 4: Select the video "code" from the URL in your browser. Do NOT select the entire URL!

http://www.talkabouttennis.com/images/howto/Embedvideo/step4.jpg

Step 5: Insert the video code in this location.

http://www.talkabouttennis.com/images/howto/Embedvideo/step5.jpg

Step 6 (no pic): preview your post to make sure embedding of the video is allowed. Not all YouTube videos have that option.

Step 7: Post your reply and wait for a response :D

Does anyone know how?

luvs10s

Find the print screen button on your keyboard (mine is above the home/delete/page up/down keys)

Press it

Open Microsoft Paint or similar programme (I use PaintShopPro)

Press the CTRL + V keys together (this is the 'copy' shortcut)

Your screen capture should now be open in the Paint programme.
Click File
Click Save As (either .bmp or .jpeg)
Type in a file name
Click Save

Upload it to a Photobucket or similar and then post the IMG link

I doubt mwoods is on a Mac but if so, hold down the Apple/Shift combination and press the numeral 3. This will take a screenshot of the entire screen and place it on the desktop. Hold down the Apple/Shift combination and the numeral 4. This will change your cursor into a + sign and you can then draw a marquee around whatever area it is you want to capture. This shot will also be placed on your desktop.

Like luvs was saying, most PCs have a PrtSc button, so just look for that. It may be in blue and share a key with another function (like NmLk on my ThinkPad). In that case, hold down your Fn key when you push it. Then, like luvs said, C+V to paste it to paint or something. Then I save that and open up an editor program to crop or whatever.

I would like to propose Article 4a. Exemptions: Justin Gimelstob.

That's a good suggestion, Jessie. But not easily done.

Have you clicked on "New Posts" in the top navigation bar. That will show threads that have posts in them that you haven't read. And it puts them in order -- newest first.

I think that will do exactly what you're looking for.

Well, this thread hasn't been used in a while. LOL!

But, I have a random suggestion.

Can we somehow condense the number of threads that are all things Trump or US politics?

Like CNN, MSNBC and Fox, Trump and US Politics are swallowing up too many threads - politics random random, national, regional & local news, world news, even techno babble(!).

Having not been around much lately, this was quite noticeable when I got into reading threads yesterday.

Maybe, in addition to politics random random, add a "Presidential policy" thread.

That way other stories don't get swallowed up in the world news, national news or other threads.

Just a thought.

Also the Democrats are choosing their new leader this weekend. If you want a feel for what the Republicans are facing Tom Cotton, the one who called President Obama a "liar" (I think) during the State of the Union, is getting his ass handed to him by his constituents right now. There's live video on YouTube.

I don't think the Democrats will make a more crucial choice for the future of this country.
