Congratulations and Welcome to Day 7 (Sunday) of the French Open Suicide Pool.

It's getting tougher as Day 7 features only 4 fourth round matches from the TOP half of the Men’s draw.

Remember, once you have selected a player, you cannot use them again. Be sure to consult the Picks and Results thread to make sure your choice is not one you used before (a duplicate choice results in your elimination).

Your choices are due by the start of play on Sunday, June 3, 11:00 a.m. Paris Time (5:00 a.m. USA Eastern Time, 2:00 a.m. US West Coast time).

Good luck, everyone!

Roger Federer (SUI)[1] vs. Mikhail Youzhny (RUS)[13]
Tommy Robredo (ESP)[9] vs. Filippo Volandri (ITA)[29]
Nikolay Davydenko (RUS)[4] vs. David Nalbandian (ARG)[15]
Guillermo Canas (ARG)[19] vs. Juan Monaco (ARG)

ugh...already used Youzhny and Davydenko and want to save Canas...don't think I can rely on Nalbandian...so I guess I'm jumping on the Tommy Robredo bandwagon.

Robredo, por favor!

In a State of Grace, I guess that Monaco could win, but I put as much of my faith in one who Can as possible, so I pick:

GUILLERMO CANAS!

i pick Davydenko
i'm crossing my fingers that nalbandian will want to see a futbol match more so than winning.

I don't like to pick players I don't like, but strategy wins here...

I'm surprised by the Robredo picks. After the Ljubcic upset I've got Volandri penciled in for a Federer rematch. Sadly, I already picked Volandri, because I thought he would run out of momentum before now.

My die is cast, and for this round it leaves me with Nalbandian

Tommy Robredo. This is my easy one...my next one...ugh.

Also, this is the first day I could officially lose my chance of beating the draw...need Nalbandian or Canas to lose (hopefully Nalbandian) or else I won't be able to make a final pick should I somehow make it that far.

Due to my earlier picks, looking ahead I can see the end of my run fast approaching. Still, for today I'll pick Guillermo Canas, and hopefully stay alive at least one more day.

I will take Monaco
I haven't picked him yet
and hopefully for me he wins tomorrow and then his run ends

Guillermo Canas for me.

I personally love picking people I don't like. It makes their result a win-win situation.

To clarify my above remarks about Robredo-Volandri, I don't think Robredo is a bad pick, he's a strong player. Also, what do I know, I thought Volandri would lose in the last round

I'm rooting for Volandri (even though that means I'm out), but I didn't have the nerve to pick him even though he has a reasonable shot.

This is getting tough...
I already used Robredo, so now I have to choose either Davydenko or Canas IMO. I think IŽll save Davydenko for the next round (if I make it that far...), so my pick today please is:

I think all of us who picked Tommy Robredo in an earlier round and are trying to make sense of the Davydenko-Nalbandian-Canas morass might find this, if not exactly illuminating, at least interesting...

Career head-to-head W/L
Davydenko vs. Nalbandian: 5-2 Nalbandian, 3-1 Nalbandian on clay (4-1 if you count a Davydenko withdrawal)
Davydenko vs. Canas: 3-1 Canas, 1-0 Canas on clay
Nalbandian vs. Canas: 2-2, 1-0 Canas on clay

Ranking on April 9, 2007
Davydenko 4
Nalbandian 10
Canas 29

Ranking on May 28, 2007
Davydenko 4
Nalbandian 18
Canas 22

Oh- and Monaco's gone from 56 to 35 in that timeframe as well (too bad I've already picked him).

So it seems like I have to save Canas for the next round. That said, I put more weight in Nalbandian's recent rankings tumble than his mastery over Davydenko. So there it is. My pick is...

Nikolay Davydenko

You present a very strong case here. I can't help but think subjectively though that if they both play their best, Nalbandian's got more game - of course with him, it's a big IF

Yeeeesh. So like, I picked Tommy last round because I didn't think I'd be comfortable picking him over Volandri given their H2H, but now I wish I hadn't. Because he slaughtered Tipso and now I'm mired in the Quarter of Death without a nice telegenic Spanish lifeboat.

I don't wanna call Davydenko/Nalbo, so...

Guillermo Canas please.

What is interesting to me in men's day 7 is that many people are taking Robredo with Volandri having beat him the past 3 times they've played and all on clay with an even overall series of 3-3. Anyway I'll choose Canas just because he should have the easier match of the day.

RedClaw

The totals as of now:

Canas 18
Davydenko 6
Monaco
Nalbandian 3
Robredo 10
Volandri

We will lose, as of now, an absolute minimum of 5 people, because we've got picks on both sides of some matches.
If Nalbo, Volandri, and Monaco lose, we will lose 5. Any other result in those matches and it gets worse. :)

Their last 3 meetings were in 2005 (2) and 2006 (1), so I don't know how much weight I would give those. I personally am hoping that Robredo is fresher coming off an easy 3 set win whereas maybe Volandri will be a little tired after his 5 setter against Ljubicic.

That's what I was thinking. Before the event, I picked Volandri to win this match-up in the tennis channel racquet bracket. But, Robredo has been fine so far, so I feel different now.

I think people (including me) are also thinking of their picks further down the line, trying to keep some options open.

But you're right, Robredo is definitely not the safest pick!
