Congratulations and Welcome to Day 5 (Friday) of the French Open Suicide Pool. Less than 30% of you have made it this far (and Montanes is suddenly making his match more complicated).

Day 5 features 8 matches from the TOP half of the Menís draw.

Remember, once you have selected a player, you cannot use them again. Be sure to consult the Picks and Results thread to make sure your choice is not one you used before (a duplicate choice results in your elimination).

Your choices are due by the start of play on Friday, June 1, 11:00 a.m. Paris Time (5:00 a.m. USA Eastern Time, 2:00 a.m. US West Coast time).

Good luck, everyone!

Roger Federer (SUI)[1] vs. Potito Starace (ITA)
Juan Carlos Ferrero (ESP)[17] vs. Mikhail Youzhny (RUS)[13]
Tommy Robredo (ESP)[9] vs. Janko Tipsarevic (SRB)
Filippo Volandri (ITA)[29] vs. Ivan Ljubicic (CRO)[7]
Nikolay Davydenko (RUS)[4] vs. Michael Llodra (FRA)
Gael Monfils (FRA) vs. David Nalbandian (ARG)[15]
Kristof Vliegen (BEL) vs. Guillermo Canas (ARG)[19]
Juan Monaco (ARG) vs. Edouard Roger-Vasselin (FRA)

In review, I'm not as gutsy as you guys. I'm going with Nikolay Davydenko who I think will be upset in the NEXT round.

Mr. Vasselin will not last much longer - Juan Monaco (another bandwagon no doubt...)

Bandwagoning after getting Bondarenkoed scares me...

But Monaco makes so much sense it's hard to turn him down

The Principality for me, please.

Ahhh...that part of the draw where now you hope your guy wins...and you hope his potential next round higher seeded opponent wins too because you need your guy to be gone quickly after he wins for you. As you know if we pick someone and they later make the semis, we already have no chance of beating the draw!

Coin flip today as to who'd win the next match...so I'll go with the recently less reliable one today:

David Nalbandian ARG (15)

You think I'd learn my lesson of bandwagon-jumping from Bondarenko, but this pick makes too much sense to pass up:

Monaco

I won't vote against a french guy, because you never know what a french guy can do ...
So I pick Robredo

Guillermo Canas

I will take CANAS
(I am saving monaco, i think he is on a roll this year, and is going deep.
This is said with all the experience of my first time in a suicide pool) :)

I find this funny considering Monaco almost kicked me out on Day 1. So, since I can't pick him, I will go with...

Tommy Robredo

this is tough... i don't think nalbandian or ljubicic will be around much longer but they're both playing guys i think could upset them... so i don't want to risk that... i think robredo will win... but i see him in the quarters... i think, as much as it pains me to bandwagon for the second night in a row, i'm gonna have to go with monaco and hope for the best.

Yes, Monaco is the obvious choice but I already used him.
Robredo the same.
It is a suicide pool after all, so time to go suicidal.
Ivan Llubicic for me.

I'll take Davydenko

So many of the other matches involve volatile players so I'm trying to get by

I'll probably regret this down the road, but I'll take:

Robredo

Elchie

I saw him play at the US Open last year, and something must have gotten lost on the surface because it wasn't pretty...

Tommy Robredo

I have Monaco envy in a major way. I picked him R1 as a safe-ish bet (although that didn't stop him from nearly landing me in the Losers Lounge). This goes to show you should consult the draw right from R1. I am a Fool!

Why couldn't it have been I. Ljubicic vs E. Roger-Vasselin? They'd be slipping and sliding too much, I suppose.
Still, given the harsh realities of the draw, N. Davy-Denko llooks to llord it over M. Llodra, so I will go with:

NIKOLAY DAVYDENKO!

We'll find out tomorrow!

Juan Monaco 29

Nikolay Davydenko 11

Tommy Robredo 11

Guillermo Canas 8

David Nalbandian 2

Ivan Ljubicic 1

Oof. Well, we've got a variety - Even a few desperate souls picking Nalbandian and Ljubicic. Remember when they were #3 and #4 in the world? Jiffy Lube isn't so far off, but David has really been sliding his way down the rankings. :p

I'm breaking with tradition and not changing my pick at the last second after counting. R.O.L.A.I.D.S., urk. I'm really not sure who I'll be picking in two days time, but I'm set for today and tomorrow...
