Welcome to our favorite spot of all for the French Open...the now world famous Loser's Lounge. This is where you'll find everyone drowning their miseries following all those Eurodirt upsets that seem commonplace during the French. Everyone's welcome to pool up a stool, share a story, have a cocktail, and exchange snarky comments about player fashions, ridiculous scorelines, unknown teenagers who chase favorites home and the like.

Loser Lounge Lingo - if you lose in one of the two games (mens or ladies) you are what we call here at TAT a "half cheeker". Once you've lost in both games you are fully cheeked. And if histroy is any indicator, we'll have some full cheekers here beginning Day 1. This game is a LOT harder than it looks.

We're waiting to see if Pierre-Yves Hardene (his nickname at TAT is HFPY) shows up again, passing out his resume (and bumming quarters) at the entrance. And our good friends Mirka, Snezana (Snow White) Jankovic, Yuri S., Uncle Tony and others will be sure to drop by during the next two weeks as well.

Over in the corner we have our "Jukebox From Hell". Feel free to play a favorite horrible song when you stop by. If we're lucky, our founding father Kirkus will put on his white suit and show us his finest Tony Mannero moves. Or you just might catch Oploskoffie and mmmm8 doing The Macarena.

Our head bartender Jessie will fix you up with some of the best cocktails this side of Willi's Wine Bar.

We look forward to everyone enjoying themselves these next two weeks.

Wait, I thought HFPY was supposed to be dancing on the bar--not handing out his resume. Does he have a resume? What does it say? "Hi, I'm the former Mr. Henin?"

No matter... Fortunately, I'm out of $1 bills. At least until Angelina gets here. ;)

Note to self--to do list in preparation for the suicide pool:

--Buy milk and double stuff Oreos
--Get those illegal immigrants I know to make a nifty batch of salsa
--Buy tortilla chips
--Buy ice cream (chocolate)
--Buy beer (the Loser Lounge tab runs out after the first 24 hours; I learned my lesson the hard way)
--Buy Nacho Cheese Combos
--Buy Pop Tarts (for the 7 a.m. matches after you're already out of the mix)
--Buy 4 boxes of Count Chocula (desert after the Pop Tarts)
--Schedule annual physical before matches start, when the cholesterol level will get back over 100

Really, any kind of Pop Tart will do... As long as there's frosting.

BTW, Jessie makes a mean mimosa... You're guaranteed to walk to the left when you walk down the street for a full week after.

I'm not sure why I bother with these things. It's always the same story. I get through 3-6 days or so, and then I make some absolutely braindead decision because I got to the thread late and saw that everyone else had picked who I had planned to pick. Then I get scared. Then I get cute.

And then, when it's all said and done, I don't feel so cute any more because I'm plant food and sitting here with angelina trying to think of new countries to adopt children from...

It's a sick game.

I've been busy as some y'all know. W/ yet another addition to the family, Brad and I have been quite overwhelmed. My love for tennis has not subsided, however...

Anyway... my stolen internet is unreliable as ever so I doubt I can stick around regularly like I did during the AO... but good luck to all the contestants!!!

Well, look who's alive and kicking. I thought maybe with the reported family troubles you and Brad are having you were auditioning to be Mark Phillipoussis' love interest, but seems you're out of the age group.

Will smoking be banned here - or do I have to wait until July 1st as I do here in London for this to be the case??? Just wondering.

Good luck everyone!

Well, seeing as Paszek is first up on her court, and I picked her... Isn't it obvious?

If she doesn't, I'm sure Potito will do his part to put me here.

I was hoping they'd start with the opposite halves of the draws. I have a plan there... I was kind of forced into these.

But of course, it would be just like those Roland Garros officials to put my planned Day 2 picks on court Monday. At which point, I'm officially toast.

to those idiots like ME that picked Bremond on the first day, we forgot the first rule of chauvinistic tennis analysis:
french player playing at the french open = choke/gag/flame out
How did we forget that the last two French Open French winners actually were born in Cameroon (Noah) and the US (Pierce)?

One of these days, I'll recognize that there's a connection between all my rules and the fact that I haven't won one of these things since 2005.

Not really so lucky, mysterx. It was a smart choice! She's by far the most consistent of the crop, and she's got a great attitude. She won't quit on you. She was getting killed in the first, but she fought through it and escaped in straights. I've given thought to modifying my rule to take Li off the list. But I'm still not quite ready. :)

With the women's suicide pool, the two "name" players that I thought would be most likely to lead folks to the Loser's Lounge were Bremond- who's just been in a distracted, "Oh, holy sh*t, I'm just about ta have ta defend my Wimbledon QF result points" funk as of late, and Schiavone- who can always be ripe for a weird upset on any given day, OR who can also give the top players fit, depending on her mood that day. Right with 1 out of 2 so far.....albeit Na Li sure made me sweat it for awhile.

However, please also, note that in my Tennis Channel draw, I made the brilliant choice of Nakamura over Chesty La-Rue. Everyone else here apparently knew that Nakamura never wins on clay.....funny how we of The Tennis Nerd Kingdom have great tennis knowledge with some player records, but can be lacking with other players.

Well, I didn't know that about Nakamura until I started researching for this pool... I thought Paszek was the obvious choice for Day 1(a) given that Nakamura had never won a match at Roland Garros and has barely won any WTA-level on clay.

Which, of course, is the type of perfectly sensible pick that can screw you out of nowhere for no good reason.

Agree about Bremend and Schiavone. They're both on my DNP list. It was Schiavone who screwed me by losing at Indian Wells in 2005 to the now infamous, gulp, Rika Fujiwara.

Here's reason # 28 why never to pick Schiavone.

Wimbledon 1R 2006, Melanie South d. Francesca Schiavone.

- This is the only main draw WTA match South has ever won.
- South has beaten 3 players ranked in the top 200 in her entire career: #199, #198, and Schiavone (I wish I were kidding).
- South's highest career rank is #166.
- South's singles record this year is 3-11, the high point of her season came two weeks ago with a win over the immortal Chiaki Okadaue, ranked #355.

Don't even talk to me about Francesca Bleepin' Schiavone.

c'mon people, it was a a tough first round. Justine and Serena are for later, Venus is good for an extra round, Schiavone.... well, you guys said it all. Stosur-Jackson was two hard court players on clay, Loit-Sharapova was Jon Wertheim's (SI.COM) pick for the early upset but I don't like to bet against the cover girl (she has guts, we must admit). Bremond (my pick) was risky, but not for a 3 & 3 washing. Dulko? Can flame out any time (remember she dates Gonzo, so she has nowhere to go for tactical advice). In retrospect, Razzano was perhaps the best bet, but she is still french and Sequera recently won a clay tournament. And that one is not over yet.
First SP and wow! it is tough out here.

I have also just finished "Our Inner Ape", non-fiction by Frans de Waal. An interesting perspective by a primatologist regarding empathy in bonobos and similarities between chimpanzees, bonobos and human beings in society.

I guess the lesson I should have learned from the Yak dump out in the last SP is not that its players with animals as a portion of thier last name that go on the "Do Not Pick" list, but players with animals as any part of their name.

Thanks, Robin Soderling. I hope your car gets a flat on the way back to your hotel.

Have you seen pictures of Akgul? She's about a foot and a half taller than Vania. Vania probably had to duck when Akgul served, just to get out of the way of those missles.

Good luck in the mens game!

Forget ducking - the serves probably bounced over her head.
and now my day 2 pick Henman is down a set and a break against a Latvian tennis powerhouse :(
Doesn't experience count for anything?

Mickey:

First picks had to be in by 11:00 a.m. yesterday Paris time. Your picks were posted many hours after the thread was closed and play had begun. Because of the number of people that play, and in fairness to everyone, we can't accept late selections. I'm sorry.

We'll be playing again for Wimbledon. I hope you'll be back for that, or continue to join us in the discussions during the French.

Castano should have won this match 2 and 2 Catz. She's a dirtballer, playing someone from Finland. Do they even have clay in Finland? I thought they played on ice.

Moose,

beaujarkko may not like that!

since I'm the only one who picked Cilic, I'll just drown my sorrows in something Croatian (Moosevic's influence pushed me to the wrong side of the border).
I suppose I'll take some consolation in the fact that I would have lost with Hrbaty today, anyway.

So, what do the Croats and/or Slovaks call their national form of 150-proof rocket fuel?
Maybe a nice Rakija, Croatian ouzo (a Drenovac made from cherries)?
or a Slivovica (Slovakian brandy).

Evidently, one can also get Slovakian Tokay (which I thought was exclusively Hungarian).

Anyway, I'll be thoroughly sloshed as a pre-emptive strike, for when Schruff lands my other cheek in here.

Yeah, I looked over six choices before I went with Hrbaty. Four of the six I was considering lost (Calleri, Johansson, Becker and the Shirt). Verdasco and (probably) Hernandez made it through. Just a tough day.

Well, everyone, it was a fun first round. Is there some unofficial rule of thumb that the rounds you don't complete in the pool you take at the bar? It seems to make sense. I haven't completely kept track, but I think that due to the magic of rain delays I may have had the privilege of getting knocked out of the men's side on multiple valid picks. Ouch. Well, I'll try to at least show up for the Wimby pool and thus match my performance at the French. Hope to see you all here (preferably while I'm still afloat) Smiles, df

I'm here now. I knew I should have picked Marcos! G. G-L loses to Brzicki, or something like that.

I think I'll sing "Yesterday". :drunk1:

A quick count brings me to TWENTY Dulko victims. :undecided:

If Alona loses, we'll need to break out a wall to make room in here.

When I saw today's matches, I thought there was going to be trouble.

OUCH!

Alona has lost the first set. Pick a table while you can :p

I admit, I will be sitting at a Dulko table.

I was aware that, as Jon eloquently put it she's a `first-team headcase' (not to mention I'm pretty sure she knocked me out of Wimby last year) but that was a risk I was willing to take

Next time, perhaps when she is involved, I'll multiply the risk factor by about 100 and ask myself if I'm still willing to take it

Bondarenko, party of nine zillion.

Axe....I think we need one of those big balls on a crane to make enough room for this bandwagon, Pam!

56 players out allready today in the Womens Game....and still a couple of bandwagons that have to survive the day. Simply brutal.

I guess I'm joining this table, too.

Oh, well, who likes the clay court season, anyway? Bring on Wimbledon.

Sorry for you Dulko losers. I'm out already because I didn't make a pick for Day 3 so I'm not gloating here.

But as I said in the play thread, Dulko is only good for ONE ROUND AT A SLAM. She might win more, but the woman has issues. So for future reference, file this note away.

Ooof. Lets hope you can find room for my one cheek... (Assuming Mr. Ferrer makes it through)

That's what I get for only finding time to check my mens pick and not looking at my womens. Amazing carnage on the womens side to make up for yesterday.
