I was in TATChat and mentioned it and really should have done it then, but most posters who selected him were off the board so I figured even if I mentioned it in the thread they would not see it either.

Yeah, I said I exchanged him for the spitter, and then regretted it b/c of the Nadal matchup, but couldn't pick anyone better.

Yes, perhaps I was too concerned with making a Coke joke :)

I wondered the same thing. I think he has value as a name. But as a player, I think some people were going on optimism and other people were going on other people. Good luck to him though, maybe he'll play naked again.

I was too lazy to change even though I had noticed him not in the draw. I also chose Juan Monaco who is not in the draw. I'm counting on Philipp Eberhard Hermann Kohlschreiber to scor some upsets here. And for Monaco and Canas to do well in Barcelona or Estoril.

My experience is you get very few points from category d players (many won't even get into MC, Rome or Hamburg, never mind the other two events), so I chose Lopez because I know he'll be at Barcelona. Maybe he'll get a decent draw, and being in his home country, he'll get me some points.

He had this great first season as a pro (2005), and since, his game has not matured at all. I think he's an excellent athlete, but I was never jumping up and down about him. "Roddick lite" was my first impression. Maybe that was unfair and inaccurate, but that's honestly what I thought.

Good call there Moose. I'm surprised he beat Melzer. Roitman has blown some good opportunities like the 7 mp's he failed to convert vs. Massu. He didn't blow this one.

I went with Seppi and he got me a win and unfortunately had Federer in round 2.

Nalby better be ready for Philipp Eberhard Hermann Kohlschreiber

Actually, I have to give all credit to Foxy or I would have forgotten too. She just briefly mentioned in TATchat that Caņas wasn't playing MC, so I managed to edit my team just a few hours before play started.

On the downside, I tried to be clever and didn't pick Roger for Category A. I went with Nalbandian thinking he would play Estoril again, but the last time I checked the entry list he was MIA.

They do become a replacement. If you want to, for instance, take a player out of Category A and replace him with a different player from Category A, the new player is now a permanent part of your team and you will have used 1 of your 2 substitutions.

--Edit--
Just make sure you don't exceed your 100 credit limit.

Not being an ignoramus at all... it can be confusing.

Yes. You can take Canas out now and replace him with someone else from the same category -- just make sure your limit of 100 credits isn't exceeded. If you want to use him for Barcelona you have to make the change before Barcelona begins. You'll still have 1 substitution left.

Okay someone help me out here. I want Novak out and Fed in. The difference between them is 6 points. But in no other category (B,C,D) is there a point differential big enough to make up the difference. I actually only need 4, as I came in under at 98. But if I'm only allowed one other sub, am I missing something or am I, now mathematically, screwed?

Ah, the fun of the fantasy tennis game. :D

You're only choices would be to trade Novak with a lower priced player or use both of your substitutions now trading a second player with someone from the same category that is low enough in cost to give you what you need for Fed.

You learned a valuable lesson. Start by picking the two highest priced players available and form a team around them. Then, whatever team you eventually choose, even if it's without one of the top two, will always have room for the switch.

Points system was set up in such a way that taking both Fed and Nadal didn't really allow us to take anyone else likely to gain major points (other than Canas perhaps)...

Bingo!
And with Federer not playing Barcelona the playing field will be little more level this coming week.
Those that took Fed paid a lot for him and he won't even be in the mix this week.

True, but there are also advantages 1) he is very likely to reach at least one more MS final (more if he goes to Hamburg as well)
2) it is easy to substitute him with anyone else from category A

I'm glad I missed that rumor, Dry.

The thing is, I know Nadal typically doesn't play Hamburg, so I was thinking I'd save my final substitution to replace him with Roger before the start of the tournament. But then I have two problems: what if Rafa does play, or what if they both decide to pull out after the tournament begins like last year?

If I knew one of those two scenarios might happen, I'd probably drop Nalbandian in Category A in exchange for someone who's actually playing Estoril.

I can't tell you how devastating it is not to be able to make any decent substitutions. There's no mathematical way for me to get Federer on to my team while keeping Nadal at the same time. If we're only allowed two substitutions, Changing Novak for Roger would put me at 102 and any other legal substitution in the B,C, or D group would only allow me to drop one point to 101. This contest is a traveshamockery and I declare myself the winner!!!

And how about Kohschreiber and Monaco not even in the draw. Glad that Verkerk, Bjorkman, and Ginepri are in. What a joke. That second section with Blake in it is just awful. I wouldn't be surprised if Simone Bolelli gets to the quarters.

I wouldn't really care about anything if Novak wasn't in the same quarter as Nadal. So I need Almagro or RRS to do something exceptional. Good luck to me with that. Maybe Roger will get hurt and Youzhny can translate his success vs. Nadal to clay.

:woohoo:

Basically, I'm screwed and am just going to maintain the status quo. I'll enjoy my time atop the leaderboard until the middle of the week.

I can't explain the Roger loss, but I have some ideas about why Chela won.

Chela played on his favorite surface and Roddick's least favorite surface.
Chela moves much better on clay than Roddick.
Roddick's power is neutralized on clay.
Chela has played a full claycourt season (and has had solid results).
Roddick hasn't played on clay since Davis Cup in February I believe.

It's a dispicable game. Of course, if I was anywhere near the top, I'd be singing a different song. For this contest, I've been reduced to a shmo...

Go Gonzo! :cheesy:

At least you knew to substitute for Nadal as your only hope!! C'mon Gonzo!

Jiggy, what I don't know could fill a space the size of the former Soviet Union. This was pure desperation.

So tomorrow, I'll be whipping out the needles and the Nadal voodoo doll.

Oh crap, I need Nadal to win for the prediction contest. Scrap the voodoo doll.

Either way, I'm screwed. Story of my life.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. You did the right thing Dry.
I myself getting steadily worse in the weekly predictions. So I'm grasping at air trying to hang on in this contest.

What are you talking about, Jiggy? You're only 59 points out with three Slams left. That's nothing!

But I definitely get the desire to win. We've been talking about something similar in the TAT Arcade thread. At this point, everything is riding on the Federer/Djokovic match, assuming it happens. But even if it doesn't go your way, who knows... Math is a quirky, quirky thing.

They were more impressed with my penguin smacking. That put them over the top.

All my strategizing this week was simply an attempt to move up to the middle of the pack. Being in the bottom five doesn't sit well with me.

It's worse to have experienced life in the top spot, only to have it ripped away from you. My strategies for Barcelona and Estoril with a sneak attack before Hamburg have ultimate fallen flat.

I'll see you all on the hard road to New York.

If Almagro and Djokovic both get the job done tomorrow, the potential Fed/Djokovic match may not be that important. But if Roger wins the tourney....that's a different story.

Moya out of the geriatric ward to stick it to me.
I need Almagro!!! At least i think I do.

I just need Hewitt now.

What do people think of this match-up anyway? I don't know much about Almagro's game.

Alamagro plays a game very similiar to Hewitt actually. Grinder, comes in occasionally. Has the capacity to serve very well.

I think that this will be a long match.

We're checking and double checking the scoreboard before posting the final scores.

A winner will be announced by the end of the day.

I totally forgot that this was the last tournament for the slide. I never used my susbstitutions. Not that it matters now. LOL
