View Full Version : Amelie #1?

This from today's Tennis X newsletter:
Do the math yourself, we've misplaced the calculator, but we figure that if Justine Henin-Hardenne doesn't reach the quarters at the US Open, Amelie Mauresmo will ascend to No. 1 for the first time if she has even a middling result -- check it. Something like that. The WTA staff on-site are pretty clueless, obviously since you haven't officially heard anything about it yet in the media. Either that, or we will have egg on the face. More to come.

I didn't realize Amelie was this close, guess my interest in ranking numbers has faded a bit with the lack of firepower at the top of the women's game over the past few months. With all the crap Kim got over getting to #1 without capturing a Slam, this should be getting a lot more attention than it has.

Anybody else subscribe to Tennis-X - its a free newsletter that comes daily. Irreverant humor and good coverage.

They're right. Subtract everyone's points from last year's USO and these are the rankings:

RANKPLAYERPOINTS1 Amelie Mauresmo42742Anastasia Myskina 41093Justine Henin-Hardenne38764Lindsay Davenport36015Kim Clijsters28156Elena Dementieva27757Maria Sharapova24158Svetlana Kuznetsova20189Vera Zvonareva201010Serena Williams199511Venus Williams199112Jennifer Capriati199013Ai Sugiyama184814Patty Schnyder162515Nadia Petrova157816Paola Suarez152517Elena Bovina140718Karolina Sprem1369.7519Alicia Molik1311.520Chanda Rubin124921Silvia Farina Elia122522Magdalena Maleeva121323Francesca Schiavone120224Amy Frazier117925Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi1159

With Mauresmo winning today, Henin-Hardenne has to get 438 points just to catch Mauresmo.
