How the hell did Maria Sharapova get the win of the week as said by the WTA?

TOKYO - It seems like every time Maria Sharapova wins a title, you can expect another to be on the way very shortly.
When Sharapova won her first career title 12 months ago at the AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships, she followed by performance by winning her second title one month later at Quebec City.

Then, the 17-year-old won her first grass court title earlier this year at Birmingham and followed that effort by winning her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon.

So, when Sharapova collected her fifth career title two weeks ago at the Hansol Korea Open Tennis Championships, many expected another title to shortly be on the way from the Russian teenager.

And Sharapova didn't disappoint. Returning to the site of her first professional title, Sharapova successfully defending a title for the first time, defeating Mashona Washington in Sunday's conclusion of the AIG Japan Open Tennis Championships 2004.

Sharapova's first title defense and sixth career title is this week's WTA Tour Win of the Week.

Arriving fresh off a successful week in Seoul, Sharapova got off to a slow start in Tokyo - needing three sets to steer clear of an early round upset to qualifier Samantha Stosur. From there, Sharapova was running on cruise control the rest of the way. She defeated Youlia Fedossova in straight sets and dropped just five games to Tamarine Tanasugarn to reach the finals for the second time in a row.

In the final, Sharapova won the first 11 games of the match before putting the match away at 60 61.

Sharapova has now won nine straight matches and her recent success has moved her back to a career-best No.7 in the WTA Rankings. She also improved her record to 43-13 on the season.

Thats all good and fine but the number 2 seed was Golovin and shes ranked what again? It should go to Lindsay! She played in FLiderstadt a much more competitive tourney and against players that were much higher in the rankings. Not to menchon that was her 7 title of the year! Shes been avoiding more competitve tourneys too!

I have said it once here before and I will say it again. The ranking system is majoraly flawed. If Sharapova hadn't played this tourmament last year she may have shot right into the top 5. Then that would have really got your goat. But yes something has to be done about the way it is tabulated
