View Full Version : IW/Miami Practice Pools: How It Works

Suicide pools are a very simple concept that test your ability not only to pick a winner, but to project your winner through the ups and downs of a draw. You'll also have to know what players can easily win an early round match for you but can be counted on (at least by yourself) to falter as you go through the 12 days of the IW/Miami tournaments

For each day of play, you have to pick one - yes, just one - winner each from the men's and women's draw. That is out of all the matches played that day. But once you pick someone, you cannot choose them again for the rest of the tournament. So you really don't want to pick a Nadal or a Kerber to win in early matches (unless you know something we don't).

To survive in the suicide pool, you will have to have gone through up to 12 successive days of picking a winner. Sure it may sound easy (and probably will be) on the first few days of play - but as you get deeper into the draws, you have to start picking based on not only who you think will win, but who is likely to lose down the road. And remember, if you are still alive come semi-final time, you are not only picking who you think would win a semi, but also who would lose the final, since you could not pick the same player again.

Men's and Women's draws are played separately. So if you lose on the men's side but are still alive on the women's, you continue playing the women's draw.

Picks will begin with the release of the Order of Play for Day 1 - you will have until play begins on Day 1 to make your selections. Your selections have to be for a Day 1 match. Subsequently, you can pick your Day 2 winner as soon as the Day 2 order of play is announced, and so on.

Each day, a thread will be started that reads in the header : "Day __ IW (or Miami) Suicide Pool Pick". This is where you'll post your pick for the corresponding day. There will be separate threads for the men's and women's game. The Day 1 thread will be posted sometime shortly after the order of play is released, and you will then be able to make your first pick.

At Indian Wells, Women start on Wednesday, March 6, and men on Thursday, March 7.

Check this board daily for any updates or rule changes that might be made due to irregularities in the tournament (such as rained out days, etc.).

Miami Starting Dates:

I looked at the Miami website this morning and found out that the women's singles matches start on Tuesday, March 19, and the men's singles matches start on Wednesday, March 20. I had been assuming that they were going to mimic the IW schedule of having the women's singles matches start on Wednesday and the men's singles matches start on Thursday. But that is not the case. So, if you were also expecting Miami to mimic IW's schedule, you need to be prepared to keep your eyes open on Monday for the list of picks for the first day of the women's practice pool.

Or you could just save yourself the heartache and not enter at all!!

Just kidding.....I love these things and I greatly appreciate the effort by Scotty and the other contest organizers. I'll be right here making my usual futile attempts at picks.

Actually, I think Indian Wells just gave a bunch of us an added layer of the feeling of futility, since almost all of us went down in flames within a couple of days. Good luck to all who soldier bravely on.

I am not expecting Miami to post Tuesday's women's draw until the last WTA qualification round is finished. The last WTA qualification round does not start until 6:00 p.m. US eastern time. So, my best guess is that the WTA Day 1 picks will not become available until close to 8:00 p.m. US eastern time. Since the matches will probably start at 11:00 a.m. US eastern time tomorrow, there will not be very much turn around time before the picks will be required. Please be prepared.

The information in the women's pick thread seems to actually be for the men's draw

I would just like to point out before I make me first-and-very-likely-only pick in the women's SP that......

this is the most hopeless looking list of matches to pick from that I have ever seen. Even the ones that look like the best picks are about 53-47 picks.

I'm predicting great success for us as a group again, just like our record-breaking success in IW.

At the disaster formally known as Miami, no matches were played, even qualifying matches. So, the Women's Day 1 picks will stand as picks for the first day of women's play which now happens to be Day 2. You may change your pick between now and 10:00 a.m. Wednesday US eastern time.

However, since tomorrow is Day 2, some of the men's matches will be played. You will have the choice from eleven different matches.

If you are caught or killed, the secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions.

Will the additional women's matches be eligible to pick as our "day one" pick?

Yes. Miami has made a real mess
Not only did they add nine matches to the WTA Day 1 list, the also removed two matches.

This is how I am going to handle it. I will add the nine new matches to the WTA Day 1 list, and leave the two removed matches on the Day 1 list and remove them from the Day 2 list. I will make a copy of this post and add it to the end of the Day 1 pick thread.

Here are the nine added matches:
WTA - V. Azarenka (BLR) vs D. Cibulkova (SVK)
WTA - I. Begu (ROU) vs B. Andreescu (CAN)
WTA - S. Zhang (CHN) vs P. Martic (CRO)

WTA - Y. Putintseva (KAZ) vs K. Flipkens (BEL)
WTA - A. Schmiedlova (SVK) vs T. Maria (GER)

WTA - V. Lapko (BLR) vs A. Cornet (FRA)
WTA - O. Jabeur (TUN) vs A. Van Uytvanck (BEL)
WTA - M. Vondrousova (CZE) vs B. Strycova (CZE)
WTA - S. Zheng (CHN) vs K. Siniakova (CZE)

Sounds like a good way to handle it to me! Thanks. Should make it easier than ever for our day 2 picks to lose before our day 1 picks too :)
