Is anyone else having trouble with the link for Zhuhai?

Where in fresh hell did those doubles teams come from?!?!?!?

Where in fresh hell did those doubles teams come from?!?!?!?

Surely we are not questioning the "eliteness" of the Rank 127/207 team?

I could never get in to Zhuhai. Just sayin'

Did you refresh after James got bracket up? I was fine once James said it was up.

well I just forgot, until after I was tucked into bed -- and did not care enough to get back up -- sad.

Just great! On the bubble to quality for London and forgot - until now - to do these predictions. 😥

Picks are up

The TAT Race to London is very tight. Three of the people in the pre-Paris top eight managed to no get their Paris picks in on time,so there might be some surprises. Here are the pre-Paris standings of the top group:

[Pre-Paris Rank] [UserName] [Pre-Paris total] [Paris Picks posted]
1 Drop-shot 253 N
2 Omegadoom 251 Y
3 Miles 250 Y
4 texasniteowl 247 N
5 FEBravo 247 Y
6 atlpam 241 Y
7 dave g 240 Y
8 TennisAnyone74 239 N
9 tenedab 237 Y
10 mysterX 234 Y
11 patrick 234 Y
12 dryrunguy 234 Y
13 PeterSkan 233 Y
14 3mlm 230 Y

Loose translation: While Drop-shot was in first in the Race to London before Paris with 253 points, because he did not submit picks for Paris in time, the people ranked 9-14 have a chance to pass him, which might prevent him from making London. By the same reasoning, both texasniteowl and TennisAnyone74 are possibly in trouble. So, the chances for the people ranked 9-14 are much larger than would have been expected if everyone had managed to get their picks in.

I got no semifinalists in Zhuhai, and went with a Coric-Anderson Paris final (before realizing I was even further behind in Race to London than I thought.) I'm calling last place right now....by 5-6 points I'll predict (at least behind people who did both events.)

So since Keys withdrew, I assume those picking Wang get points for the SF pick? Won't make any difference for me standings wise but might for a few otherwise.

FWIW... we did terrible AGAIN. Only three had Wang in final - Omegadoom, patrick, and tenedab. Only mysterx had Barty in finals. That's 4 of a possible 30 finalists right.

Patrick has Wang winning final, mysterx has Barty winning...once again at least we'll have someone get the winner right.

In Paris, everyone had Djokovic in final (except someone in desperate too far back mode). JazzNU was the only one with Khachanov though. 16/19 also have Djokvoic winning final.

and it really stinks that I missed deadline on Zhuhai -- I had picked Barty to win -- on the principle of "Why not Me?"

I'm not sure. In a regular tournament, if a pick made the semifinals, the picker would get the semifinal points regardless of whether that player showed up to play or not. Also, Wang played the semifinal and final as an "alternate" (according to the WTA site) not as the player who earned the spot.

James7

It's an odd position. Keys did earn the spot so it's not like it was a wrong pick.

Wang making the final makes it very complicated for scoring.

This must not have happened before.

A compromise? Give Keys points for making the semifinal, Wang for points for making the final and Barty points for making the SF, F and winning? Or Keys points for making the semifinals and Barty for making the SF, F and winning?

I'd give Keys points for making the SF, since she earned it, but since she could not compete, and they replaced her in the SF with Q. Wang, she too should get SF points, since she was the actual player that played in the SF against Muguruza. Q.Wang should also get the points for making the Final since she destroyed Muguruza in the SF to reach the final. Barty should definitely be awarded all points (SF, F, and Winner). Just my two cents, which usually isn't worth that much, lol.

I have no dog in this fight, as my predictions sucked, but I don't know how else it could be scored. Both Keys and Wang get SF points, and Wang gets final points. Barty gets the win. But I also don't know if the system we use allows for such creative scoring. Or how easy/difficult it is to do that.

I am also fine with the idea of just trashing the event this time around because what happened was an unanticipated scenario, especially if the system patrick uses lacks the flexibility to accommodate this scenario.

Zhuhai will not be canceled as this is the last event of the season for WTA. Will have the results later today and new thread for ATP finals as their draw is today.

I don't think we have ever done Next-Gen finals. There's no template or scoring in place for it. Is the Actual WTF draw today?

I would assume the more straightforward thing to do for scoring would be to award points for either Keys or Wang in the SF slot equally.

ptmcmahon
11-05-2018, 07:41 AM
We certainly didn't do Next-Gen finals last year...and last year was the first year, so I can safely say we've never done it.
