Iíve been following the Vikhlyentseva match as I picked her, and Vanuatu King has called a medical timeout in the middle of the breaker. I think she was 5-1 then play stopped at 5-4, canít find any info but I guess she must have fallen or something for play to be stopped in the middle of a breaker

So my pick Vikhlyantseva has just lost to the world number 881, who herself hasnít won a match for 18 months. Vania King saved 12 of 14 break points, including 3 set points at 5-6 0-40 in set 1. Iím never playing this game again

Everytime I look up the ranking of a player I'm picking against and see they are in the triple digits...that player somehow wins. 881 is pretty bad though.

Since no one picked from the 2 matches still on court, here's our final update from Day 1:

lost 42 of the 262 pickers, or approx 16%. That's a mere PITTANCE for a women's pool. C'mon people, get to losin'! Join me in the losers' lounge. I'm having nice, Russian vodka (thanks fer nuthin' Vikhly-eva-ova-ina-whateva).

Random question for clarity, just noticed Buzarnescu withdrew this morning and a few people picked her today. If she (or any player) withdraws after the picks thread for the day closes, what happens to those who picked that player? Can they make a quick change in pick or are they just auto-eliminated?

I didn't pick her but am curious how it works should the issue come up. Been playing these suicide pools for years and never really thought about.

Eek, I hadn't see that news yet.

That's bad news for Buzarnescu, but also for the 5 people who picked her. We have a rule in place for this: people do NOT get the lucky loser who now plays in the first round. When Buzarnescu does not win, anyone who picked her does not advance to the next day in the pool.

You can change if the thread is still open. Once the thread is closed... You will curse the whole day long.

I think she withdrew after play started. Barthel is now scheduled to compete as the LL vs. Vondrousova and their match is now 3rd up on Court 13. I thought that match was originally scheduled earlier but I could be mistaken.

Tough for those who picked her as she has had a strong season, especially if she did withdraw after the thread closed. Yikes...gotta watch for that kind of stuff I guess too

I picked Buzarnescu but she withdrew and got replaced. Do I make a replacement pick or do I automatically get the LL?

I picked Buzarnescu but she withdrew and got replaced. Do I make a replacement pick or do I automatically get the LL?

Unfortunately, you are out.

The instructions state:

"Since the object of the game is to pick a player who you are sure is going to win on that day, should your player withdraw, the player obviously cannot win her match. You do not get a substitute (lucky loser) - you have chosen a player, not a spot in the draw."

Happened on the men's side today as well when Vesely withdrew about 90 minutes ago.

I watched all of her qualifying matches, so in a change for me, I'm actually thinking positively for her at the moment and I was betting on her not against the other player. We'll see. I'm was well aware this could be a bust, even before I saw the massive bandwagon (I didn't think it would be quite that big for her).

C McHale 2

I think this number was low because the rest of us have already learned our lesson. McHale needs to be on your never pick list. She's just going to mess with you because it always seems like she should win these first and second rounds, but she'll only lead you on a journey to the Losers' Lounge.

McHale should only be on your pick list for the "randomly taking a set off of Serena at a slam" pool.

This is probably my 100th Survivor Pool and probably my 10th McHale-caused departure. When will I realize she's not even as good as nobody thinks she is?

Don't pick Cornet. Don't pick a French player. Other? Which lesson learned, cause I'm trying to put together the definitive list.

This is roughly the order I heard about DNPs in, a couple of geologic eras ago:

Bondarenkos
Chinese players
Qualifiers
Anyone who's not a seed
Any known bandwagon
Anyone who won the last warmup tournament
Anyone who treed the previous round (aka letdown)

Ribbons
08-28-2018, 07:59 PM
On the other side of the coin, this is my Prefer-to-Pick list:

* Unseeded players. I think Drop's term was "adrenalin junkie." But, really, it's the cheap pleasure of feeling smug when a bandwagon goes down and you get to peer over the edge of the cliff while your pick that only five other people in the pool have even heard of staggers over to their ice bath. That, and having more options available in the later rounds because you didn't pick the journeywoman who lasted two more rounds than anticipated.
* Players scheduled for early in the day. Because then I usually know the results by lunchtime.

GlennHarman

In various eras of our SPs, there have been times with so many DNPs that it was impossible to find a pick without violating one of the "rules." GH

You watched all her qualifying matches? Aside from the fact that I didn't know this was possible, why is anyone spending that much time watching qualifying on-line? I thought everyone had gotten over the Genie lust by now.

Genie is not a player I like. I don't have enough emotion for her for it to rise to hate, but truly, not a fan. I watched Tennis Channel's coverage of Qualifying this year, didn't watch a moment online. First time it's ever aired on TV. It was like watching a regular weekly tennis tournament basically in terms of coverage like Cincy or Toronto and Montreal. It was all day coverage. I watched when I got home each day. No surprise, Genie's matches were all on. So, I saw a portion of every one of her qualifying matches. I also saw a part of all of Felix's qualifying matches, because his were also all aired.

But to be clear, I don't have a problem with anyone who chooses to watch qualifying online. I don't see the problem, if you have the time, and like to watch in that manner, great. Not sure why we're judging someone's interest in tennis on this forum, qualifying or otherwise.

People have no problem watching preseason football..I watch it(barely)...which is pretty unwatchable at times.. qualifying used to be on cbs sports channel in years past..since I go to Open, I watch a bit of it hoping a Genie or Zvonareva makes it in..if a Muhut slips up, they don’t get the ..seeing his kid run on the court and hug him after was cool..so it was neat that he made the field..either way, if you’re there, it’s free to go watch..fun to see new names and old names and who the qualifiers might be..I agree with Jazz, let’s not judge each other..

You watched all her qualifying matches? Aside from the fact that I didn't know this was possible, why is anyone spending that much time watching qualifying on-line? I thought everyone had gotten over the Genie lust by now.

I watched the US Open qualifying in person three of the four days last week and really enjoyed doing so. There were thousands of people there doing the same, including a group of tennis fans I met from Pennsylvania who drive up to NY each year to watch the qualies. Admission is free, and as has been noted, you get to watch former stars either ending their careers (Mahut), or trying a comeback (Zvonoreva, Gulbis), as well as rising young stars like Felix. I knew the Bouchard matches would be packed, which they were, and didn't go to see her play. But she obviously still has a lot of appeal (whether for her modeling or her tennis).

Some of my Do Not Ever Picks:

2 Any Russian
3 Unseeded player who just pulled off big upset in previous match
4 Injury and retirement-prone players
5 Tempermental flakey players like Hot Sauce Verdasco

There are about twenty-something more DNP rules for me. Picking a player is like wandering through a wilderness of mirrors. I've broken enough of these
"mirrors" to have hundreds of years of bad luck.

I have do not picks and never picks. Do not picks are last options that I shouldn't be choosing. Never picks are you know better than to do that again, don't even think about it.

Karlovic, picking against a Bondarenko, Isner outside of the 1st round - all never picks for me. McHale is on this list now because she has just not come through and can have the nerve to drag a match out over 2 days and give you hope only to still lose something that seemed on paper she should win. I have a few more, but this list is small for me.

Now, do not picks, those are more like Pavly, Dolgo, American men outside of the first round, lower ranked Romanians (Cirstea, Begu, & Niculescu have all burned me at least once), and several other rules are ones that are last options. I should not be picking from this list unless it's a last option, everything else looks shaky than these built-in shaky options.

I definitely violate my do not pick list from time to time, but I try to lose with someone new instead of this trap group.

All this talk about who not to pick, and yet NO ONE has been eliminated yet today. Don't you people know how this game is supposed to work? :p

There's supposed to be at least one big bandwagon that crashes, so it's less work on your humble SP admin (and so he has plenty of company to cry with in the Losers' Lounge).

Well that's because we've leaned the error of our ways. But not to worry, there's still two players in contention for losses today I think with one of those being in danger already. Don't lose hope just yet.

I'm sure that would have been incredibly rare, if not completely unprecedented, in these days of 200+ players. However, Sofia Kenin has just eliminated 16 by beating Maria Sakkari (which I thought was a pretty safe pick).
15 still await the fate of Mugruza, too.

I have a lot of updating to do to everyone’s daily picks and red-or-not status in the first posts in this thread. But my ‘travel size’ plan to use Google sheets and my phone & tablet is not working nearly as well as the Excel & laptop duo I left at home.

My apologies, I’ll do a big manual update Saturday or Sunday morning. Thanks for understanding.

hard to see losing anyone today, though i would say sevastova and then kanepi have the best chances to be upset. i say sevastova because makarova has done quite well at the open in her career, been pretty hot this summer, but good chance of seeing 100+ survivors left going into the weekend. i dont think we had that many in men or women at the 3 other slams this year.

FWIW, I've totally run into this problem before at work. Google Sheets always seems capable until it's not. Not sure if you have a OneDrive account, and maybe it's possible to just do it through the regular online site without one, not positive on that part. But for future reference, I have had better luck with uploading my documents to my OneDrive account and opening whatever document I need to work on in Excel Online to do the changes I need.

That was actually a very brave (or stupid that became lucky) Sevastova pick. Not sure if they just rode on faith or what, but Makarova had a 3-0 H2H on her including a win on hard courts over her this year.

And ... Bertens goes on my Do Not (Ever) Pick list

Why? This loss doesn't warrant putting her anywhere near a DNP list IMO unless this is like the 3rd time she's burned you or something. Kiki should've won this one in 2 sets given she was up in the first, but this was always a danger match given what many have predicted from her opponent.

There are no rules by now. The WTA is chaos theory put into practice.

For me, the WTA is not chaos, it just has younger players who step up and beat the top ranked players on big occasions unlike the ATP. ATP would seem more chaotic if the young guns beat these old guys once in a while and especially if they won a slam given their purported talent. Instead, they lose to 37-year-olds in straight sets.

GlennHarman

JazzNU, There's is certainly nothing wrong with your assessment of the state of the 2 tours. And I know the following is just semantics, but for me, the situation at the Slams for the WTA is total "chaos", to the point that it greatly complicates the lives of us, the poor SP players. And this is all about us anyway, isn't it? GH

I have no sympathy for the Garcia pickers, I learnt a long time ago to never EVER pick against CSN. She done nothing recently to make anyone believe she can do well here-and thatís when sheís at her most dangerous (ok she got to the final at New Haven, but she only actually won her first round match, she got 3 straight retirements after that to make the final, and Sabalenka beat her pretty easily)
