View Full Version : WSP 2018 Women's Picks and Results Thread

This is the first time I have run a Suicide Draw Pool, so I thought I ought to tell you a few of the details on how I will post the results. There are two main portions to this thread: the first section is a list of contestants and their picks, and the second section is a listing of the picks chosen and the number of people choosing them.

In the first section, updating the list has two parts: posting the picks for each contestant, and "redding-out" the people whose picks lost their match. I'll post the picks shortly after the beginning of play. However, since my "redding-out" process works best in batch mode, I will not be "redding-out" contestants until after the end of play each day.

In the daily picks chosen section, I'll comment on the picks. I will admit that I am not in Drop-shot's snark league. I will update this section several times during the day, and "color in" the picks that have finished their matches. Losers turn red, and winners will turn blue. (Think "red your dead, blue your through.)

Feel free to talk about the matches happening during the day. Also, remember that snarking about your losing picks is considered to be part of the fun, so visit the Loser's Lounge when your pick loses.

Most of all, the objective of the pool is to have fun. So, HAVE FUN!

Day 1 Pick Summary

As the day progresses, I will mark losers in red and winners in blue.
Starting with 266 people, but with one invalid pick, so truly starting with 265.

RADWANSKA 77 : probably don't want to pick her past round 2, should be good
AZARENKA 40 : should be OK for now, but if she beats Pliskova in round 2, you might be in trouble
BEGU 24 : we have people on both sides of this match, I don't know her opponent
BERTENS 19 : should be fine
KRUNIC 13 : again, we have people on both sides of this match, I suspect that you have the right side
KA PLISKOVA 10 : I think you are too early on this one, unless she loses to Azarenka
KR. PLISKOVA 8 : probably OK
MCHALE 7 : unsure about this one
MLADENOVIC 7 : she has not been playing particularly well this year, I think you are in danger
SAFAROVA 7 : we have some brave souls picking a match with K Bonderenko in it, but I think you will be OK
RYBARIKOVA 6 : you should be OK
VANDEWEGHE 6 : you should be OK too
JABEUR 4 : you're brave
PERA 4 : should be OK
SVITOLINA 4 : good pick if she loses to Serena in round 3
GOERGES 3 : good pick if Monica Puig does not get hot, so I think you are taking on extra risk
SMITKOVA 3 : wildcard vs qualifier; don't know enough
BLINKOVA 2 : unsure about this one
KEYS 2 : might be a little early, but you still might be OK
KUZMOVA 2 : don't know enough to comment
MAKAROVA 2 : unsure
ZHANG 2 : against Petkovic, this might be more risk than you need
BABOS 1 : one person picked your opponent, risky pick
BRENGLE 1 : several people picked your opponent, I think you're in trouble
BUZARNESCU 1 : your opponent made the final of last week's tournament, this will be a tough match
GOLUBIC 1 : tough match, but should win
KUZNETSOVA 1 : picking against a seed, you're brave, but you might be OK
LAPKO 1 : someone picked your opponent, might be a tough match
LOTTNER 1 : qualifier vs qualifier, I have no clue
SEVASTOVA 1 : when Giorgi is on, she can be very dangerous, but you should be OK
STRYCOVA 1 : you picked against Kuznetsova, this is a tough match to call
SWAN 1 : several people picked your opponent Begu, I think you are in trouble
TSURENKO 1 : one person picker your opponent, looks like a tough match
WICKMAYER 1 : looks like a potentially tough match but you should win
V. WILLIAMS 1 : probably too early

Started with 266. We have 182 survivors, 76 losers, and 8 people waiting on the results of the McHale Lapko match

I picked a wildcard in a SP day one match!! To be fair, golobuvicís last 2 matches were both against Ons Jabeur- and Jabeur won the both easily so I think Ons is a pretty savvy pick even though sheís a wildcard. Bookies have her as favourite too

No problem. I actually found it really difficult to pick any of these matches, the vast majority of the ones that donít involve big favourites are too close to call. Was gonna go Azarenka at first but I think itís too early

Jabeur would have been a good pick at the other slams, but with so many fewer picks required at Wimbledon, it seems like an unnecessary risk.

We'll see.

Itís not a risk if you donít know itís a risk, or however the saying goes.
Had to make a rushed pick on a busy night and more casual, Slam-centric tennis fan than anything.
Pardon any displayed ignorance.

The Jabeur gamble paid off although she had to do it from a set down and with just 38% first serves in. The Radwanska bandwagon in danger, sheís just saved 6 match points against Ruse, who is hitting big and screaming like a banshee

It is that we like our ignorance to be concealed :)
(And you are right. You picked Ons. So what? By now, any pick in the WTA is a huge risk)

Yep. Mostly dumb luck, I chalk it up to instead of ignorance.
Ive had plenty more confidence, no-brained picks crash and burn in a heap than this one.
No shame in it. At least she had the dignity to take a set :)

I think this Ruse character is my new least favorite player on the wta tour. Shes screaming so loud they could call a hindrance on EVERY point. Meanwhile she is being openly coached from the stands and what does the chair umpire do? Nothing!

The 77 of us who picked Radwanska just breathed a huge sigh of relief. She also spared us having to hear any more of the hideous sounds being emitted by Ruse, who makes Shriekapova sound quiet by comparison.

Swan got the best draw of the young Brits though, right? I thought she'd win this one. Harriet Dart played a great match against Pliskova, but that was a tough ask for her to pull an upset. Still I think people will be paying closer attention to her given how hard Pliskova had to work for that win.

We are doing much better today. We have 138 survivors and 41 losers. Note: these numbers include the McHale pickers, so the final numbers will be different.

Someone in the Day 3 womenís pick thread wondered why people were picking Venus so early. Answering here: I originally picked her because I thought the list of choices represented the draw and therefore Venus would play Woz next and was in Serenaís quarter! Wasnt thinking. The list of choices doesnt mirror the draw. Not sure why other people picked her but it might have something to do with her struggle in the first round. I changed my pick once I checked the draw. Her quarter is really soft. Big opportunity.

I was actually one of those deceived! No serious consequences for me so far, but I hope the list of choices can be matched to the draw in succeeding listings. (I messaged our pool master about this just now.)

Buzarnescu has bagelled Swan in the first set. I was tempted to pick this as a NID, but I ALWAYS play to beat the draw in these things so Iíve gone for a riskier option. Which is why I never make it past the first few days I guess! My one medal came a few years ago at Wimbledon when Serena won but there were a quite a few of us that beat the draw that year so I guess there werenít that many upsets

Osaka 41
Mertens 21
Suarez Navarro 14
Kontaveit 10
Hsieh 9
Barty 6
Kerber 4
Ostapenko 3
Kasatkina 2
Kenin 2

We still have 14 Siniakova and Strycova pickers from Day 3 that need to survive two matches. (They have all survived Day 3)

At the end of the day, 113 survivors and 3 losers. That is a very good result.

Keys is down a set to Rodina. It was Rodina that killed me so Iím hoping Madison turns it around

Oh No! Madison Keys has lost the first set and is down a break in the second set. We could get a visit from this guy: :axe:

A set and double break down now :( Rodina is playing steady, keys is a mess. Madisons only chance now is a Rodina choke

Keys comeback on. From 1-4 in the 2nd, Madison is now up 5-4.

And Safarova out too. So today was Bloody Friday.
I did not take Maddie because I really thought she would have a chance against Serena. Otherwise, she was the clear choice.

That's the same reason I did not take Keys.

First I was going to pick Vekic, then I backed off after looking at her results on grass this year. Then I was going to pick Giorgi, but I've never trusted her wildly erratic game, so I backed off. I ended up at Safarova because of her 4-1 head to head on Makarova and easy win at Wimbledon a few years ago and Makarova's tendency in the last two years to follow up big early-round upsets with clunkers, but I knew it was a shaky pick. Safarova looked like the better player for most of the first two sets, but she missed a huge opportunity to go up a break in the 2nd with a shanked return at 15-40 off a weak second serve. Makarova took control from there, and when she broke to win the set, the match was effectively over.

Giorgi, by the way, saved a match point in the 2nd set.

I was the lone Makarova picker. I really have trouble figuring out how I justified that. Like is mentioned above, my memories of her usual M.O. from too many slams has been: Beat someone you should have no chance against, and then lose 2 and 2 to a qualifier in the next round.

I watched the Makarova win over Woz. When I made the Makarova pick to beat Safarova, I was remembering how well she played against Woz, and also thinking that she would lose to Serena if she beat Safarova. Obviously, I'm still hoping for that to happen.

I think this pick merely represents blind luck on my part.....and since I so rarely have blind luck, I was overdue.

And us Venus pickers are out too...
Well, no problem, it is not bad if Venus lost.

I wanted Venus to win, but I did not pick her, I was going to pick her against Pliskova, but that never happened so.

I really feel for the ones who lost with Keys today. I didn't pick her only because I wanted to save both her and Serena to have the winner of that match (which I would have seen as a toss-up) to use as a pick later.

I wasnít too confident in my Safarova pick but the others I considered lost as well so I would have been out regardless.

Giorgi 13

Oh no! I picked Giorgi and it didn't post. I normally always double check that stuff too. That's a bummer, especially since it was the bloodiest day. Ah well! I'll just follow along and hope one of my pretend picks is wrong soon.

If you look at the choices for Saturday's matches, all of our picks will be wrong soon.

I was surprised not to see a pick from you. You are normally very good about things like that.

Day 6: We lost three more to No Pick. So, we are starting with 36.

Gavrilova 11
Ostapenko 10
Kontaveit 7
Mertens 5
Barty 1
Kerber 1
Van Utvanck 1

Eight matches and seven picks.

12 survivors and 24 losses. Percentage-wise, today is worse that yesterday.

Ostapenko's pickers are through too, but that 8 increased to 13 with the Mertens pickers. But the Mertens pickers had to know they were out on a very shaky limb today.

With Simona out, and for after Wimby:
Is this one of the worst WTA's ever, or simply one of the best, with this parity?

And somebody said it yesterday: just hand the trophy to Serena. The question now is who will be the surprise runner up.

Didn't mean to agree, I think Serena is the favorite, but by no means a given she'll win this with everything about her health since giving birth.

As for this year's Wimbledon, I don't think it's the worst, the quality of many of the play and matches has been good. And time will be a better measure than anything else on how big some of these upsets are, but I wouldn't put this above 1999 Wimbledon yet in terms of surprises, that's the year qualifier Alexandra Stevenson and Mirjana Lucic reached the semis and Dokic upset Hingis and Pierce on her way to the QFs and a host of other major upsets. There was also a little known qualifier named Kim Clijsters who did a bit of damage that year.

I wouldn't count Plisokova out just yet! I certainly think Serena has a real chance but she's still not at her best (and anyone who isn't impressed with her so far is really selling that beast of a mother short!). So I'm just not sure if Serena can beat Plisokova. But I definitely wouldn't bet against Serena!

Oh and a question - with only 12 of us left after the third round, is that the fewest number heading into the fourth round?

I would have picked Kontaveit and been wrong, so... hooray? :p
