Welcome to the inner circle! While perhaps not as elite as usual due to the larger than usual number of players going into the second week, there are still plenty of people gawking at you from behind the velvet rope like you are Fergie making a Vegas night club appearance. Special or not, one rule still holds true here: when you're red, you're dead.

[Editor's note: while this recap does not apply to those whose names are listed above in lights, the hoi polloi need something to look at while your limos are looking for a good place to pull up on the red carpet so you don't have to walk very far in those shoes.]

On Day 7, TMQ: FO2018 finally got our bloodbath! Actually, this was not quite a bath--more of a blood shower, like in that nightclub in the opening scene of Blade. But we are down some numbers. Speaking of the undead, these two fresh corpses didn't even wait for rigor mortis to set in before bouncing back up to deliver to you, the loser, a message from beyond the grave

Where It Went Wrong For You, the Loser

Countess Petra Kvitová (3! 3 victims! Muahahahaha! I VANT TO SUCK...IN TIEBREAKERS! A bunch of you have already used Kontaveit, and she's looking like a contender to come out of this half, so maybe start to worry? Now it's time to turn into a bat and fly away to Wimbledon.

Countess Magdalena Rybarikova (25! 25 victims! MUAHAHAHAHA!) For putting the most heads on spikes in one go so far this tournament, I have earned the title of Magda the Impaler.

Congrats to the 60-some of you who made it to the second week!

Day 8 is black tie on the opening night of the updated thread, and 2 of you decided you had nothing to wear, leaving us with 58. The overwhelming majority picked Strycova, and I'm just not sure she can handle that pressure, at least not without getting super crabby.

Barbora Strycova 38
Sloane Stephens 6
Madison Keys 5
Anett Kontaveit 3
Yulia Putintseva 2
Daria Kasatkina 2
Mihaela Buzarnescu 2

Boo...I woke up and I'm already out! (Buzarenescu.) I knew Strycova the safer pick, but was saving her for next round. Good luck people!

Everything I needed to happen to stay alive in having a chance to beat the draw happened--Stephens and Keys winning.

Well, except for the part about my actual pick going down meekly to Putintseva.

It always feel better when your second choice loses too...then you know you were screwed no matter what. :) If it makes you feel better I'm also screwing myself in predictions with the jinx?

Reality has come crashing home to most of you--a Kasatkina win will put us at 15 remaining, 13 if she loses

I now know why I couldn't get far in any suiside pool.
It must be Cookie Monster and cream cheese...every time I got sandwiched between the two, I lost early.
This time, I ate them!

I had used Styrcova in the first round, and even then, did so with some trepidation. I'm glad I wasn't in a situation where I needed to pick her in this round.

JTContinental

OK, now that was a proper bloodbath! I can't imagine anything that I would want to watch less than a Putintseva/Strycova match, but I bet it was moody! Barbora didn't want to stick around long, so she'll be brief, but still wanted to let you know

Where It Went Wrong For You, the Loser

Barbora Strycova (38 victims) Move over, Magda the Impaler, and make room for Barb the Butcher, and I'll cave your head in for looking at me funny! F*** off!

Mihaela Buzarnescu and Anett Kontaveit (2 victims each) We're appearing together like those dead twins in The Shining because we have the same message for our losers--don't you wish you'd picked me two days ago when I looked like I knew how to play tennis?

13-15 remain!

JTContinental

15 left to start Day 9, with 2 still waiting on Kasatkina to finish off the AO champ.

Garbine Muguruza 9
Serena Williams 3
Simona Halep 3

Day 9 was a quick one for the women, with two retirements, a snoozer of a straight setter, and the dismantling of the 2 seed in 11 minutes. We lost a few unlucky Serena pickers, and she is currently holding a late night presser to let you know

Where It Went Wrong For You, the Loser

Serena Williams (3 victims) I could probably beat Maria 2&1 with one pectoral muscle tied behind my back, but why risk it with Wimbledon coming up? As much as I relish the experience of gliding about the court, hitting winners at will against Sharapova and her grim, joyless robo-strokes, I'm going to let this one go. I did just enough to get the competition scared again.

12 remain--who will survive?

First time trying this, by my review no one left can beat the draw as all have used Stephens and Keys. That means have to pick the Quarterfinal and Semi from the top half leaving no one left for the final. Did i do that right?

ptmcmahon
06-05-2018, 05:52 PM
Looks like JieOllily0001 hasn't picked Keys yet actually...but having picked both Sharapova and Muguruza so far also can't beat draw. So think you are correct that no one can beat draw.

Congratulations and good luck to the two remaining competitors. It was fun getting this far.
My gut told me to pick Kerber against Garcia in the last round, but I couldn't pull the trigger and picked Muguruza instead. In hindsight, I wish I had done so since that would have left me Muguruza to pick today instead of Sharapova, and then I still would have been able to pick Halep in the semis. But it's always easy to second-guess in a pool like this.
I'll see everyone at Wimbledon in about three weeks!

JTContinental
06-07-2018, 12:49 AM
Well, ladies and gentleman, we have come to the final installment of TMQ: FO2018. After today's play commences, one of our final 2 has run out of picks, so we have a winner! But who cares about the winner right now? It's all about the loser here at TMQ, and our QF non-winners pre-recorded these messages for you to let it be known

Where It Went Wrong For You, the Loser

Yulia Putintseva (3 victims) I've been on tour long enough now to know that I spend more of my energy and concentration on hitting the ball over the net an in between the appropriate lines, and less time storming dramatically around the court like a preteen whose mom has told her she's not old enough to wear make up. What can I say? I'm in love with my withering eyeroll.

Daria Kasatkina (2 victims) To be honest, I was surprised there were two people left who hadn't already picked me, and then you waited too long! I can only assume you had run out of other picks.

Maria Sharapova (4 victims) Back to Bradenton-frickin'-Florida for this woman. See you in a few weeks at Wimbledon, where I will play the exact same game on grass that I do on clay, only less successfully.

Angelique Kerber (1 victim) TMQ and I have consulted, and determined this was the only losing pick in the whole tournament that wasn't the loser's fault. Also if I would have won this match, you would have won the suicide pool. That knowledge is better than a virtual medal, right?

And then there was one. TMQ will make an official winner's announcement tomorrow, one said winning is officially official. Thanks, everyone, for joining me this last couple of weeks.

ptmcmahon
06-07-2018, 06:08 AM
And with play started I think I can officially now say...congrats JieOllily0001!

Hmm, still thinking on if it's better and when the 2 matches were so one sided in my favor at the start, think I jinxed getting super excited. The plan was big or go home, and go home I went.
