Anyone else following the 2018 Eurovision Contest? You can find the list of qualifiers here: https://eurovision.tv/event/lisbon-2018/grand-final/participants. I'm shocked (a bit) to see that Russia did not make the Grand Final. Neither did Azerbaijan.

I love the Israeli entry. I hope the Ireland entry makes a good showing. Germany has a nice entry I like a lot. Cyprus is the betters' favorite, and it's a nice tune, but I was left a little meh, even if the singer would turn most gay men straight. The Lithuanian entry is really nice and touching, but sleepy. The Estonian entry has an opera theme from a very nice singer who isn't really an opera singer. It's a little weird. Her register will get votes, though.

Thoughts? The Grand Final is Saturday.

I'm going to watch it live tomorrow with no background this year. I'm a little bit scared :)

I forgot all about it until last night and was relieved to find I had not missed it entirely.

We watched both semis this week, not having listened to many of this year's entries before that apart from "our" Dutch contestant Waylon with his Outlaw in 'em. We'd heard people talk about Israel as one of the big favorites but, based on the performance we saw, Netta will be lucky to be in the top 5. The Swedish entry is slick - the dude singing it almost too much so. Austria was a nice surprise; not a spectacular song by any means, but it seemed to please the crowd and was performed confidently. And then there was Cyprus... Who we now think will win.

Our top ten at the end of the night, in random order, are: Czech Republic, Germany, Sweden, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Netherlands, Norway, France, Estonia, Israel.

It's a real shame about the Israeli entry. Apparently it got too much attention in the months leading up to Eurovision, and there were always concerns about how that particular song would translate into a live performance with high production values. I guess it doesn't work. Unless Netta pulls something out of the hat tonight.

Cyprus seems to have this in the bag, though Tog made a good point in our conversation on Facebook that it could have problems with the juries.

BTW, koffie, it's great to see Waylon in Eurovision again. He was part of my favorite Eurovision song ever. Damn that Conchita!

:D

Beforehand few people in the Netherlands gave them any chance of even making the top-10; country was considered to be a no-go. I won't say Conchita was better, but oh, the emotion, the visuals. I loved it! (Ms. Wurst that is)

I'm about 10 minutes behind watching on delay. I figure Netta changed thing up for the grand final compared to the semifinal, and I think she has a great chance to win. Have to wait to see what Cyprus does.

So the big story from Eurovision 2018, other than Israel winning and Cyprus finishing second, is the enormous disconnect in a few of the jury/televote results. Particularly as it relates to Sweden and, to some degree, Austria. The juries loved Sweden and Austria. The public, however, did not. Austria and Sweden went into the televote ranked #1 and #2. They finished #3 and #7, respectively.

I honestly don't know why Sweden was even in the conversation. Yes, they probably had the best production values of the night. They also had one of the worst songs ever written sung by, at best, a mediocre singer.

You can see the jury and televote scores here: https://eurovisionworld.com/eurovision/2018.

I thought overall the songs and performances weren't great at all this year. Austria and Sweden were both very meh to me.

There were a lot of white Bruno Mars copycats.

Yup. I think he went last year or the year before as well.
