I apologize for not having any pictures of bars, but I thought we ought to have this thread up before play begins. We are sure to have some losers today, since as of this moment we have people picking players from the opposite sides of the same match

Can you make sure the copper mugs are chilled? I'll want a Moscow Mule when Sharapova loses to Osaka.

Shelby was up a set and a break. So, of course we who picked her are doomed.

Was she one-legged before the match started?

This is a perfect example of how I think we're collectively getting worse at SPs. I even noted in my pick that she hadn't won a match this year...and picked her anyway. I too often say doesn't matter how bad Player A is playing if I don't know who player B is.

Sorry for bragging but... I saw your post and I was surprised that she was being picked. What has she ever done to be picked for a SP for the qualies?
Then again: Sharaboba lost, Bouchard lost, and we all know that the first rounds of IW and Miami are the toughest because it is a bunch of nobodies or a returning player (Serena) that you won't pick because she will probably win the tournament.
Conclusion: you are right. We are getting worse at this.

I actually was going to pick against Bouchard but when thread came out it just had her against Q3...so I went with Shelby instead. Should've went back later and changed.

So if I said we're getting collectively worse...and I was double-cheeked both on day 1, does that mean I'm (tied for?) our worst SP player now? :)

Double-cheeked to a man and women both outside the top 150 in rankings. Ugh.

I missed the deadline for the women and went out Day 1 with men. Good times...

Out of both pools in less than three days. PT's point: we are NOT getting collectively worse at this. We are totally sucking at it.
C'mon, we should be better at it. We are supposed to know about tennis!!!

As Day 2 dawned i was dreaming of an imagery tiny medal. 3 hours later Tiafoe took me down and out of IW. These practice pools are horrid: if you win you don't really win anything or get a medal, and when you lose you feel extra stupid indeed. But I love torture. On to Miami!

Whoever thought that picking Djokovic in his first match against a qualifier would be too risky? :hammerself:

I think the smaller draw here has something to do with this.

Just like I think next year will be tougher when there are only 16 seeds.

Only 16 seeds next year? That might make the first couple days a little more manageable actually...we'll have some people between 17-32 to pick.

Who am I kidding? We'll pick them and they'll lose.

Said in a little bit more detail for each scenario -

Specific to Indian Wells for the most part you have the top 96 in the world. The top 32 have byes at the start. So in theory you are picking players ranked 33-96.

In a (current) slam for each of the first two days you have 16 of the top 32 playing those from outside of the top 32. You then have 16 matches amongst players ranked 33 to 128. There can be more of a "gap" at least in terms of numerical ranking.

Starting next year when go (back) to 16 seeds - will you really want to go for higher seeds early in tournament? What if early on you have the #8 seed playing the #17 playing in the world? You create your "path" to victory - how will you navigate that minefield?

I think anyway it will be harder...

All I mean is on days 1 and 2 we'll have #17-#32 available where we wouldn't have before - at IW/Miami.

I wasn't thinking about the slams - those will definitely be harder.

9 of us took Struff, so 9 of us here already.

Vondrousvoa lost the first set too, so I could be double cheeked with both my first picks...just like at IW. All to people outside the top 125.

3 people got Fucsovised over, and 2 went down with Harrison already too. Brilliant picking by us all again.

Count me in as one of the dreaded nine, these practice pools are MUCH harder and MORE frustrating than the Grand Slam ones.....arrrrghhh.....

Ugh...was anyone else 0 for 4 like I was over these two events? If so we deserve the best seats in the LL.

Whaaa. So good in Indian Wells and then Miami...out on the first day.
So sad but predictable.
