So, the carnage for Day 1 was fairly minimal. We started with 289, lost 45, and are down to 244. That's not bad, though I had hoped for more bloodshed. Bring on the No Picks!

I believe that's the same number remaining in the women's pool...

It's ~15%. Not insignificant.

Well, I'm used to running the women's pool where you lose 75% of the pool on the first 2 days. :cheesy:

I picked Chung to beat Mischa as he is a big favourite with the bookies and leads the H2H 2-0. But a quick glance tells me Iím the only Chung picker to a handful of Zverev pickers. I hope they donít know something Iíve missed

I think it's a case of people defaulting to pick a seed over someone they may not know a lot about. I'd pick Chung as well...but I don't think I'd be confident enough to take him in the SP.

I also agree that Chung is a favourite. Not enough of a favourite to risk in the suicide pool, though.

Thought about it, but want to save Chung for the next round, just in case.

I see several people took Struff today. I was set on him until I looked up his grand slam record. I normally dont background my picks, but for some reason I did. I think he has only won 2 Slam matches in the last 4 or 5 yeas, and none for 2 or 3. Too much risk.

Okie dokey. We had 244 players remaining after Day 1, but the dreaded No Pick killed 6 of those, so we're actually at 238 to start the day. Here's what you all did for today. I smell at least some blood. And while some of you will certainly get through today, you certainly are biting some awfully big bullets so early in the tournament!

That's exactly what I did. Had no idea his slam record was so hideous. I actually think his game is better than his ranking, but already having done zero research on Peng before going down in flames with her yesterday, I could not bring myself to pick a guy looking for his first slam win in ages.

And Haase scared me because his opponent beat Tomic in the final round of qualifying. Say what you want about Tomic, and he deserves every bit of the negativity, I'm not making a first round pick against a guy who beat him.

Plus, I believe Haase had an injury during his match with Bautista Agut last week. It didn't affect him then, but he's dropped the first set today.

That's exactly what I did. Had no idea his slam record was so hideous. I actually think his game is better than his ranking, but already having done zero research on Peng before going down in flames with her yesterday, I could not bring myself to pick a guy looking for his first slam win in ages.

Joke's on us! See, intel is overrated. But hey, at least we saved him for later in case he upsets Federer! :)

It took a little time for me to reconcile my counts, but it looks like we lost 55 players on Day 2 and are down to 183 left in the pool. So after 2 days, we have lost roughly 36% of our pool.

183 players were eligible, but 5 more succumbed to No Pick, which brings us to 178.

Here’s where you all landed—with some mindless commentary from someone who openly admits what he does NOT know about tennis could fill a space the size of the former Soviet Union.

The Solid

Gilles Muller (59): This was my pick. And y’all should be filled with dread for that reason alone. But on paper, he should win this match and lose to Gilles Simon in the next. SOLID!

Diego Schwartzman (36): Diego had a banner 2017 but hasn’t had a great start to 2018. Still, you have to like his chances against the child who had to win his first round match via extra innings. SOLID!

Andrey Rublev (35): I like this pick a lot. And the draw positioning works. He beats Baghdatis and then loses to Grigor in the next round. Some may be worried about Marcos’ extensive experience on the court. The fact that the overwhelming majority of that experience was BAD should help Andrey get through. Even though the kid hasn’t finished puberty yet… SOLID!

Alexandr Dolgopolov (8): Face it. You’re afraid of Diego. My only concern here is that Palmolive (Hi, nelslus! Miss you much! Hugs and Kisses! Would you let belslus know I left a $10 bill on the handlebars of the seat-less exercise bike when I left this morning?) is one of the few players left in that quarter who could, conceivably, give Rafa fits if Palmolive is on. But I say… SOLID!

Nikoloz Basilashvili (2): Here we go—wide open section of the draw. But if you’re going to bite a bullet in that section, I think you bit the right one. SOLID!

The Slippery

Damir Dzumhur (14): I like Damir a lot. He’s a real pistol. And I totally get the strategy here—draw positioning. But the time to take Damir was probably 2 days ago. Those folks got it right. Y’all are taking a big risk here—that I suspect will work out. Just barely. SLIPPERY!

Kyle Edmund (5): I loved this pick until I realized he’s going to make the quarters. If he gets through this, he has at least two more wins in front of him. That said, he’s coming off a tough 5-set win, and Istomin plays inspired tennis about twice a year. SLIPPERY for a bunch of reasons!

Pablo Cuevas (4): See Ryan Harrison. I don’t like it. SLIPPERY!

Ryan Harrison (3): Just when Ryan was getting on my good side, Monday’s match happened. Does someone have video? I would have like to watch Dudi Sela kick the crap out of Hothead Harrison. And then Ryan would be gone and I wouldn’t have to worry about assessing the merits of this pick. But I don’t like it. SLIPPERY!

Grigor Dimitrov (2): This pick is colder than Winter Storm Inga!!! So, what’s your problem with ol’ Black Heart, anyway?!?!? I don’t get it. Do you think young Rublev will take him out? Or perhaps your bracket has Negative Nick in the semis? SLIPPERY!

Marin Cilic (1): Oh, ye of little faith… Then again, I have saved Marin to use later in so many pools where he never materialized that… well… Maybe you’re on to something here. But I still think he has two more wins left in him after this one. SLIPPERY!

Ivo Karlovic (1): Please make him lose. Please, please, PLEASE make him lose!!! To quote T-Amie when she was writing about someone else, “If I was walking down the street and saw him lying on the sidewalk, I wouldn’t step over him. I’d step ON him.” Not to mention I have never had a positive suicide pool experience with the bozo. SLIPPERY!

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (1): Never post suicide pool picks when you’re drunk. Just kidding. But if he gets through this match, I think you’re brilliant. At least until he beats Nick, Grigor, and a glorified scrub from the bottom of this quarter. I still say… SLIPPERY!

The Sink

Andreas Seppi (5): Why?!?!? I wouldn’t touch this section of the draw with someone else’s finger. Ew. The nicest thing I have to say about this pick is you know he’ll lose at some point—he always does—but that could very well be today. SINK!

John Millman (1): I love the bravery on display here. A few hours from now, we’ll know if this pick was brilliant or boneheaded. SINK!

Nick Kyrgios (1): The nicest thing I can say about Nick Kyrgios is that he’s not Bernie Tomic. That said, I think Nick will go deep into the event this year. I really do. So this is WAY too early, especially if he manages to run over small children, old ladies, kittens, and puppies on his way to and from every match during the tournament. SINK!

Good luck to all!

I also apologize that I didn't have time to create any commentary for today's picks--I know you all enjoy that. But, after today, I think it's safe to say almost everyone--not just Pamela--has used Richard Gasquet.

We had five more No Picks, so we start the day down to 168. Here's who y'all chose for Day 4:

The Edmund-Basilashvili match has been really strange. Edmund won the first-set TB 7-0 and raced to a 3-1, 15-30 lead in the 2nd set, then dumped four games in a row in about 5 minutes, then had a break point to get back on serve he didn't take.

Then Basilashvili, leading two sets to one, got broken in a 20-minute game that had 15 deuces to fall behind 2-0 and tanked the rest of the set. At one point Basilashvili was 5 of 6 on break points and Edmund was 3 of 17.

When two guys like Fucsovics and Kicker play in a third round, it's never a sure thing, but after I did the research it was pretty clear Fucsovics was the big favorite.

He not only crushed Kicker 6-3, 6-0 in a challenger two weeks ago, but he had sneaky good results leading up to the Aussie Open while Kicker was allergic to any surface other than clay until this tournament, playing just about every one of his matches on the dirt last year.

WELL, then, this solves my Fucsovics and Kicker mystery. I had no idea why anyone was picking from this match- and even now knowing the result, I'm glad that I didn't make this pick. This and the Sandgren wins were Winnetka scrub options and NO thank you.

Nevertheless, I need to announce that I have survived Monfils and now Fognini picks. Which means that either I have already earned a medal or immediate TAT expulsion.

I mean, Monfils is of course his own special brank of fresh hell. BUT, face it. If you were to pick Fognini vs. Dodo Cheney*, it's going five, and it's 50/50 who's gonna win. (*AND, yes, I know that Dodo is dead.)

It wasn't just the head to head result, which actually came in a tour event rather than a challenger as I incorrectly remembered in my previous post. He also got to the final of the challenger last week and lost to current Aussie Open round of 16 guy Seppi in 3 sets.

More importantly, Kicker almost never plays on hard courts. That fact was the most decisive for me. Dirt ballers go away at the first sign of trouble on hard courts and don't have any belief in themselves away from clay.

I agree wholehartedly on evaluating a player based on his or her tendancies by surface. However I could not disagree more that "dirt ballers go away at the first sign of trouble" on any surface, because clay courters are fighters and grinders by nature.

I took Zverev in R2 thinking I wouldnt want to pick between him and Chung, and then he would play Djokovic. R2 was the last safe time to pick him. Given Zverevís track record in Slams, Chungís success lately, and the fact that theyíre close to the same age (so Chung probably wasnt intimidated), I thought Chung might pull the upset. But I didnít have the guts to actually pick him. Now Iím wondering if he could upset Nole, given his confidence streak and young legs. If Nole has an off day, watch out.

Yeah, I think we would all agree that if Cilic doesn't put together that great 4th set breaker (played a great 3rd set breaker too) that he probably loses the match in 5. Glad he came through.

ImprobableDream.....I am totally surprised that we, as a group, went 79-1 in favor of Cilic. I was one of the Cilic pickers, but I felt total lack of confidence in that pick. I thought then, and still do, that it could have gone either way. Of course, we all beat ourselves up a bit when we make that fatal pick, whether it is totally logical or not. (I, for example, am still pissed about losing the women's SP in round 2 when Konta lost to Pera, who then got shellacked in round 3).

Here's the tally for today. We have 98 players still in the game:

Cilic, 71
Edmund, 19
Seppi, 4
Nadal, 2
Carreno Busta, 1

TOTAL: 93

Something's not adding up

Sorry about that. It has been corrected. We had 72 Cilic pickers yesterday, not 71. Thanks for pointing it out.

Someone got all the way to Day 8 and then chose No Pick! Ack! So we start the day down to 92. Here's what you all decided to do:

Thiem: 54
Berdych: 34
Chung: 1
Djokovic: 1
Federer: 1
Fognini: 1

TOTAL: 36

Good luck, peeps!

I think that if Djokovic plays the match of his life, he might be able to keep it close against the American Borg a.k.a Hurricane Sandgren

The backhand winner down the line Thiem hit down match point in the fourth-set TB was one of the best shots I've ever seen in that situation. He just crushed it, and he ended up winning the TB 9-7.

EDIT: But Thiem lost anyway. Sandgren was the better player for most of the match.

Dry, Thanks for running this. My luck with 5-set matches ran out tonight with Thiem. It has been great fun. Good luck to the few remaining. Thanks again......GH

If Berdych had lost, we'd be down to two people.

I'll do the redding a few hours from now, but if you picked Thiem or Djokovic on Day 8, sorry, you're out. You all had a very nice run. Congratulations! We are down to 36 players. At some point today, I will also create the Updated Picks & Results thread. A big congratulations to those who will make the short list!

Fucsovics was a great pick, Djokovic not so much.

Turns our Novak was a good pick, Thiem was not though :(

Now I have to pick Sandgren to beat Chung in order to beat the draw. Crazy thing is, I think he can do it. Played him tough in Auckland even though he lost. I don't think Chung is a lock for that match. Whoever wins that match will be in the semis vs. Fededer or Berdych. Licking their chops.
