Here's the place to talk about the contest! A pick tracker will be posted after main draw play begins, and will in the best case be updated daily. Scoreboards will be posted after each round concludes.

Flush with all of my prior success in this contest (none!!), I have tried a new strategy which I am completely confident will be every bit as successful as my prior strategies. Good luck to everyone.....I should be the usual amount of competition for you in this contest, which I never seem to get even close to right.

A pick tracker has been posted at http://www.talkabouttennis.com/contests/ycwj/2017-Wimbledon-YCWJ-Pick-Tracker.htm . Please check your picks and make sure I wrote them down correctly. Remember, a green "WON" means the player hasn't played his/her match yet, while a purple "WON" means that pick has been eliminated.

Weefunk hung 20 on the field and leads, with three others one behind. Woody also didn't lose a pick.

I'm sure this doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but inquiring minds want to know: Why does Woody have only a 1st, 2nd, and 4th picks for women, but no 3rd pick? I'm sure there is a logical explanation, but I can't figure out what it would be.

If I remember correctly, he had picked a strange blend of Osaka/Ozaki, the intent of which was not easy to discern. So the pick had to be rejected. (Note to all of us: Including first and second names for all picks--for everything--would constitute a best practice.)

That is a shocker, as I am usually solidly in the bottom third of the scoreboard :-)

Wait, how did I end up 1 pick short at the start?

edit: Oh, I see it now. I copy/pasted the name from SkatingFan's entry (which I often do to avoid typos, lol) without looking closely at the spelling. Sigh. I doubt that's evidence enough of my intention, but it is right there in SF's post, which was accepted as Ozaki.

So my clarification of Ward was rejected?

Yes, because you did so after the deadline.

This game is so tough that I implore leniency regarding spelling. James WURD must be accepted. Anastasija Publonczeckoslovakjia too. Lets accept Naomi Osaka, but also accept Naomi Osaki, Naomi Sake, Naomi Nagasaki or even Naomi Tokio. Jelena or Alona should be the same, Philip Skullschreiber and of course, Guido Pella or Gido Pella or Ouija Pella or even Goody Pella or Witchy Pella. Let us post Taro Daniel Evans and then accept our explanation, or Petra Martin Klizan.
Please, I implore. Let us misspell and accept that when it comes to this game, we should even be allowed to get our own names wrong, and accept an entry from Paunchy101, or Goody, or DropSh*t, Pi-Amie or Kilometers (Miles went metric).
It is so hard!!!!

Hmmm ... is there an appeal process? I submit the following

1. The question was - which Ward did I mean, James or Alex
2. I wasn't given a deadline to respond, just a note saying clarify in order for my pick to count
3. Didn't see the PM until Monday morning [I agree that's not anyone else's fault] and responded right way, specifying Alex [Line 115]
4. Neither Ward was in play until Tuesday
5. Both Ward's lost on Tuesday. At a minimum I should get credit for that!

Seriously, though, I did provide clarification and before either possibility was in play, so I respectfully request reconsideration.

So yeah, 2 rounds now without losing a pick, and Ozaki lost to Allertova who lost to Martic. I would have had 8 in play after 2 rounds. #$%!!@#$%@%$

Ponchi101 didn't lose a pick in the second round and leads with a sparkling 38. Woody still hasn't lost a pick and is in second with 36. Three others are tied with 34.

About Woody and PeterSkan's picks:

If Woody had picked Risa Osaki or even R. Osaki, that would have been fine. For that matter, Osaki would have been fine if there was no Osaka. The same with PeterSkan: even A. Ward would do. I hate to disqualify your picks, but if I accepted them this would quickly slide down a slippery slope.

38 points. That is like the combined total for my last three YCWJ participation. So that should be it for me.

GlennHarman

Ponchi, If I'm counting correctly, I will have 32 after round 2. I have no doubt at all that is the best round 2 score I've ever had. And you're 6 points ahead of me!!! Still, we're both doing a lot better than our usual dismal performance. It appears the strategy I used this time was better.....which of course means that if I use it at the US Open, I'll finish dead last.....that is the way this thing goes.

I don't think I've ever had more than 3 or 4 live picks after an R2. That's what really stings, I would actually have 8 live and 40 points except for one stupid letter!

ponchi101
07-07-2017, 08:08 AM
Remember the butterfly effect. If you had typed the correct letter, the breeze produced by your typing fingers would have been different, so quantum mechanically a resonance around the world would have multiplied so that the order of play would have been different and all of us would be without a single loser in the second round.
So we must thank you for misspelling that name. That is something I am always extremely careful to do correctly, Wordy.

Anytime, Pinchi. FYI, if you win, I'm putting an asterisk beside your medal in my mind ;)

That said, looking at the current draw and both of our picks, I do like my chances!

As often happens in the third round, many picks won and there was some separation between the leaders and the pack. Tenedab made out the best, posting the only double-digit total of the round with 12 to lead with 46. One behind is Woody.

At the other end of the scoreboard, texasniteowl clinched the wooden spoon for the contest when Wozniacki came back to defeat Kontaveit. Unfortunately, their score isn't all that low, a respectable 16.

Went from 7 players to one, in one round.
I should know never to have hopes in this game. Never.

Yeah round 3 was rough. I got 15 points in round 2, 1 in round 3 :)

In the fourth round, tenedab and Woody separated themselves farther from the pack with 55 and 50 to Federex in third place's 42. Tenedab and IronMike are the only contestants with more than two picks left.

I have projected Djokovic as the winner over Mannarino. If Mannarino somehow pulls the upset, this scoreboard will change significantly.

If my math is correct, Ozaki as 3rd pick was worth 4 points, meaning I would have been 1 point back from tenedab. Phew! I can stop kicking myself. Well done, tenedab. Not sure if anybody else can still win with the wooden spoon?

On closer inspection, I can't find anyone who has a winning scenario. CyborgShoes comes closest but if Berdych->Djokovic->Federer->Murray for example, I think that's worth 16 points for a total of 54. Congrats tenedab :)

Congratulations, tenedab! With Berdych's win over Djokovic, the medal has been clinched! (If Djokovic had won, mysterX still would have had a chance).

Woody is the only competitor anywhere near tenedab on the scoreboard, but his one pick, currently represented by Tomas Berdych in the semifinals, is also held by tenedab. No one else can even reach tenedab's current total.

I'll give a wooden spoon update after the next round, but IronMike currently has the best chance of correctly picking one, with three out of the four women's semifinalists represented in his picks.

Both tenedab's earning 8 points and IronMike's earning 7 points in the quarterfinals are impressive feats. Congratulations.

Going into the finals, our contestants have all four picks collectively represented. For the women, Zheng Saisai will be the wooden spoon winner if Venus Williams wins the title, and Yulia Putintseva will take the boobie prize if Garbine Muguruza wins. On the men's side, it's Alexander Ward (if Cilic wins) vs. Malek Jaziri (if Federer does). TennisAnyone74 and PeterSkan are the only Jaziri-holders, but five contestants have (A.) Ward. IronMike has both women's contenders, and deelighted2 has Zheng.
