The Steve Johnson pickers, constituting the biggest bandwagon of Day 1, will have to sweat it out for a while. Other than that, a relatively quiet day on the men's side.

Johnson pickers: remember to make your Day 2 picks regardless of the limbo you're stuck in.

Us Johnson pickers can breath a sigh of relief, he held the duece game and broke to 15 so it's 5-5 now in set 4

Any of my fellow Schwartzman pickers following the match (I guess you guys in the US might still be in bed!) he recovered from the rubbish start to go 2-1 lost the 4th on a tiebreak and has twice recovered from a break in the 5th to get 7-6 but it's Rublev to serve. I've been glued to the livescores for the last hour!

7-7 now

Me, too. He just pulled it out, 9-7. Whew.

I'm glad I was asleep when he dropped the first set, 6-0.

I came incredibly close to being double-cheeked today but finally broke a run of excruciating early-round five-set losses by my men's picks. I did not start following the Schwartzman-Rublev match until the fourth set, but I did see where Schwartzman missed a break point at 3-3, another one at 4-4 and three at 5-5 before dumping the tiebreak. I went back to bed when he fell behind a break in the fifth, woke up to see it was 5-5 and followed it the rest of the way.

I guess the Schwartz was with me.

Up two sets to none, Klizan made us sweat out a five setter winning 6-4 in 5th..whew. Against the 283th ranked French wildcard who'd lost his last four clay ITF matches...heh :)

If you look it up on twitter, there are some funny gifs from that match. No love lost.

There was a lot of drama in the fifth set. Started with Klizan celebrating Lokoli's DF on a BP to go up 5-2, crowd booed him. On the changeover umpire had to come down from the chair to get in between those 2 as they kept going at each other verbally. And then Lokoli broke back and went 4-5, and in the last game had chances to break, but thankfully Klizan was able to close it. When he came up to shake the hand Lokoli wanted nothing to do with him, I have never watched either of these players before, but SP makes you watch stuff like that ;) I'm glad I survived, but it was too much drama. I thought Klizan is done after he got bageled in the fourth...

I was going to pick Klizan before I saw he had lost in the first round of his last five grand slams. He still was a good pick considering his opponent. He has a history of injecting unnecessary drama into his matches.

At first I was going to go with Querrey, glad I switch to Klizan, even though there was drama at least he squeezed through

Here's the deal. Of course, as would be the case of anyone who follows this sport, I've heard of the name of Martin Klizan. Many, many times, certainly. Nevertheless, would I be able to recognize him from a Scrub Lineup? Would I be able to recognize him 2 minutes after his giving me a lap-dance? (Which he owes all of us after today's BS.) Why, no, I would not.

AND yet, one finds oneself banking one's sad little, pathetic hopes for obtaining a pretty little imaginary medal with the likes of.....Martin Klizan.

Here is what you are left with: Being thrilled that, up to now, you've avoided such "logical" picks you had seriously considered taking, such as: Simon, Gilles (until you remember that, albeit up until this very moment he was an easy R1 pick, he is now 372 years old and worthless) and Barthel, Mona (until you remember that- oh, right, she's Barthel, Mona.) AND you go with FAR!!!! more logical picks such as Ferrer, David (who is also 372 years old and worthless, but he won, so pfffffffffft) and....well, Klizan, Martin. Because it's always safe to go with a seasoned pro against some local Scrub-Lite.....unless it's not.... :woohoo:

I was choosing to ignore that since most of them weren't clay. That would have been a good excuse had it not worked out as well :)

He was too close to 50-50 odds for my tastes.

Of course, Klizan seemed so optimal for reasons others have already listed... so what do I know.

Kei Nishikori 2
Nicolas Almagro 1
Carlos Berlocq 1

We only lost 7 today, with 3 Tsonga pickers forced to sweat it out overnight. So we'll start tomorrow with 144 (or 141)

Well, I'm one of those three people that have to sweat this out....ugh. I was going to go with Klizan, but saw he went 0 fer in the Grand Slams last year, he did survive today in 5 (again file that under go with your 1st choice)....we shall see what Jo-Willy can do tomorrow, but I'm not feeling too confident at the moment.

I was going to pick Dolgopolov, but noticed no one else was picking him. I figured they knew something I didn't. So, I semi sweated-out Isner.

First rule of fight club: never pick Isner. Youre supposed to like pain, but not enough to actually watch one of his matches.

Monfils and Gasquet should be playing each other next round, but why do I have a feeling that's not going to happen

ponchi101

Because they are Monfils and Gasquet. Monfils will always have the chance of waking up in Paris DisneyWorld instead of Roland Garros, Gasquet can remember he was a Junior champion here and play like one.
It happens. And lots of people running on Gasquet's shoulders so, more jinx power than he can handle.

I'm over the Tennis Channel's love affair with Kyrgios. His game is a series of pot shots. I'd much prefer to see Verdasco / Herbert. Fortunately, he's about to bite it.

Since I've picked Gasquet, I'm really curious as to how he's going to turn it around and lose, especially now that he's won the first set 6-1.

Agreed, I did give it some serious consideration too...but figured I at least *might* pick Murray later but can't see myself taking Verdasco later. I don't have Murray going much farther in my bracket.

I sweated out that Murray match a bit.....I decided that I think he will lose to Del Potro in round 3, so why not pick him in round 2? Anyway, since I did that, I suspect Murray will now make it to the final.

Delpo and Klizan play similar styles. Blast the forehand. Not much more.
Andy is looking better and today he did not talk too much to himself. Which is a good sign.
Having said that: no way I pick from the Andy/Delpo match. 50/50.

Delpo used to rip the backhand, and now resembles a 6 foot 6 Steffi Graf. I think you can be successful playing that way, but murray will probably be able to find that wing and do damage.

Yikes, brutal day so far. After 2 more no-picks, we started the day with 120 people left. And an injury to the bandwagon pick has already eliminated half the pool today:

David Goffin 56
Roberto Bautista Agut 43 (+ 1 double pick)
Milos Raonic 10
Lucas Pouille 6
Grigor Dimitrov 2
Albert Ramos-Vinolas 1
Jiri Vesely 1

And we'll lose at least one more as there are competing picks in the Ramos-Vinolas v. Pouille match

Anderson would have been my choice if Goffin had not run into the tarp.

Today would have been the tricky pick, and he came through. Frustrating to go out with a fluke injury, but I've been lucky not to have had that happen before in about 10 years of this contest.

In retrospect Anderson was the best choice, but perhaps I'll survive with Monfils as well.

The key words there are "in retrospect". As dolphins and I were discussing his Day 7 pick and going through H2H and other info, we were struck by the fact that, while Cilic held a 4-2 edge against Lopez in their H2H, Feliciano had won both of their matches on clay. Meanwhile, Cilic has something like a 5-1 edge against Anderson (1-1 on clay) and Lopez has never beaten Anderson in four tries.

So Anderson's win looks a lot better since Cilic also beat Lopez. Had Feliciano won that match, it could have been dicey going forward.

Regardless, I'm guessing the top half of the draw will be the undoing for most folks, and today was probably the toughest day in the men's pool because of the choices, the draw positioning, and the rapidly reducing margin for error (i.e., you all are reaching the point where someone needs to win one day and lose two days later--or it gets really messy really fast).

I changed my pick from Cilic to Nishikori to save Cilic for his match against the Anderson/Edmund winner. Was all looking good when Nishikori was up 2 sets. He seems to have suddenly lost the plot. Lost the third and down a break in the fourth.

The reason I took such a risk with Monfils is that I need my previous picks to lose soon and he'd play Wawrinka next who I believe will be a top half finalist.

In retrospect Anderson was the best choice, but perhaps I'll survive with Monfils as well.

And you see, that is the insanity of this game.
Fine, you picked Monfils. But these two guys are 7-6 H2H (Monfils), with no discernible patterns (Monfils won their only clay court match), both are locals so the crowd will be split and they both won easily their last match.
So what criteria to use? I guess you had to look forward to what is best for you in terms of not running out of picks soon. But basically, you just flipped a coin. Which we all have to do at one turn or another in this contest.
Cuevas was a coin flip. it was a good pick. H2H was very close (2-1 before this match), all on clay, but Cuevas has been playing well lately as opposed to Verdasco. We still got burnt.

I don't think it's possible to win this game without ever picking from a 50/50 match. My thinking was that Monfils is stronger on clay and will for sure lose to Wawrinka in the next round. Right or wrong we'll find out soon...

Other than figuring out what to do with Djokovic, which of course is a big question mark, the bottom half of the draw seems pretty cut and dry, no pun intended. The top half, though, is a messy minefield. And now the fact that some of these guys will have to play three days in a row doesn't help. Or maybe it does. The scheduling made sure the main contenders (except for Nishikori) will get a day off.
