I used to say never pick a player over a certain age. Problem these days is more and more are over that certain age.

Nah. Radek has Bachinger right where he wants him. He's evil that way. But in case I'm wrong, I hope this is not an omen for what's set to transpire on Court 4 today because I have PEHK who plays next on that court. LOL!

It's my belief that then you lose during the first week it's either because you made a bad pick or you made a good pick which just went bad. Sometimes you get lucky and a bad pick goes good. For example both Verdasco and PEHK are good picks (I took neither) and if they find a way to lose then it's just a very bad luck. On the other hand Stepanek was a bad pick and the same goes for Benneteau.

I would argue that Verdasco (headcase), whom I picked, and PEHK (oft injured) are pretty risky picks, just like like old injured guys like Stepanek or, I don't know, Tommy Robredo ;)

(No argument on Benneteau... sadly)

Anyone who watched Bolelli take out Kohlshchreiber and almost take out Nishikori at Wimbledon would have known to stay away from anyone playing him. He has serious game. Would be top 40 easily if his head was right.

8 Young
7 Chardy
1 Youzhny
2 Seppi
43 Pospisil

1 Bellucci

308 - 146 = 162 (Muller still on court)

Drop-shot
08-25-2014, 06:16 PM
Since I didn't have time to post a pre-match analysis, here goes my first hindsight 20/20 analysis of today's picks!

Muller 3: given the bountiful options of Day 1, why make it so hard on yourselves? There were better choices.

Kohlschreiber 80: this was one of the smarter picks today. Playing a clay loving Argie, this was as close to a shoo-in as you get in SPs.

Llodra 1: you lived, but unnecessary peril was taken.

Nedovyesov 4: yes he was playing McGee from the qualies, but still, far too risky for comfort.

Benneteau 8: you're partially absolved since Benneteau had been playing well and his opponent, frankly, was not. But in reality, this was a more-than-necessary risky pick.

Verdasco 37: on the shortlist of what seemed easy picks for today this got rather messy. Luckily common sense prevailed and you're still in.

Klahn 2: no. Just no.

Stepanek 76: *sigh* Some people never learn. NEVER EVER, EVER, pick Stepanek at a Slam. May this be a lesson for you all.

Wawrinka 1: oy; if he catches a gear here, this was way too early for Stan.

Mahut 3: whilst Bellucci has done nothing as of late, why risk it? Your love for adrenaline has cost you dearly.

Young 8: short term results should not override a luxuriant history of shortcomings.

Chardy 7: of the mid-level risk option, this was on the safer side. He's a nicer R-2 choice.

Youzhny 1: haven't seen much tennis lately, have you? :cheesy:

Seppi 2: I wouldn't have touched this match with a pole.

Pospisil 43: see? This is one of the harder choices. He can play, and certainly has had better results than Bolelli; but after last year's disastrous loss here, he had to be avoided.

Robredo 13: the Fed-conqueror of '13 has a nice draw. I think this is one of those picks that inadvertently, we will regret if we use too early.

Kamke 1: there was no need for such risk.

Mayer 13: holy seeds! He's number 23! Good call and a nice R-2 choice.

Becker 4: you play with fire....

Bellucci 1: out of all the risky choices, I think this was the one that had the worst odds and yet this was one of the few that paid off. Well played.

Ahoy there! In my return to "early" analysis, I find that only 159 have survived. That's way too messy for 1/3 of R-1. So you'd better clean up your acts there!

Lets see how you've chosen:

26 Querrey: he's probably a goner next round so it looks good, but his recent form hasn't been too inspiring. Still, I approve the move.

4 Garcia Lopez: yikes! The risky picks didn't take long to appear... Lu can be a headache and his form has been good this summer. Stormy seas are almost certain.

6 Isner: normally I would've loved this choice but there's a reason I didn't take him and it's his ankle that forced him out of Salem last week. "Wait and see" would've been the better way to go with Long John.

18 Rosol: by Neptune! He's seeded! And still that wouldn't make me take him. Tiredness could be an issue here. Lets just hope the weather holds up for that ship.

3 Sijsling: like sailing to the mermaids...

48 Simon: Simple Simon is safe for 2 rounds.

3 Delbonis: treacherous seas. Requires expert sailing. Expect casualties.

23 Monfils: ahhh yes, the majestuous Flying LeMonf. I foresee two good days of sailing and then anything could happen as he goes up against the HRRS (Her Royal Red Shoeness) Gasquet and after that the recently christened Dimitrov. Not impossible but I wouldn't want to be on that boat.

2 Fognini: a flare for the dramatic eh? This ship could sink in a pool. Have your lifejacket at hand.

6 Mannarino: out of all the French fleet, you had to pick this one?! Shame on you.

6 Bautista Agut: I liker yer' chances.

3 Karlovic: this outdated ship belongs to the Stepanek class as in "NEVER PICK".

1 Ramos: another one who chose a wrong day to set sail.

1 Tursunov: of the risky picks, I think this one has the better odds.

1 Sock: I foresee an even battle against the HMS Ebden.

8 capsized on the No Pick ferry.

Not that Rosol should have lost, but I'd view his opponent's matches in the qualifiers as warming up nearby. Rosol on the other hand had a great week, won on Saturday, and then had to transition quickly and go 8 hours away leaving Tobacco Road for bustling NYC. He could have used another day of rest for sure.

I'm not a fan of that NC tournament the week before, I'm wondering if the early withdraw winds up helping Isner for a change. I hope the Pilot Pen never moves to NC, because I just assume the field will not attract the higher ranked players with it being too far and too different in climate and feel to truly acclimate in time if you do well that week.

Never mind the transition to the U.S. Open. When middling players win tournaments, they lose in their first match the next week an incredibly high percentage of the time regardless of the distance or the surface or the climate. I don't have any proof of that, but I know it is true from following tennis closely for a long time.

This doesn't sound right to me, but often the player can get a bit more rest, like a Wednesday start at a Masters. Kind of surprising the USO can't allow last week's finalists to play the latest R1 matches.

And here we are again! After suffering minor losses yesterday, 127 of us are ready to continue... though final numbers will be available later.

And the nominees are....

Lopez: I'm torn here. Looks great though his H2H is negative. Yet, the real drawback here is that I think he has a really good chance of making the quarters.

Johnson: this obviously belong in the Adventure-Drama category. Granted there weren't as many good options today, this still seemed unnecessary.

Gulbis: he's been a no-show for some time now and his Slam record is dismal. Suspense category.

Cilic: he's got two good matches in him before a showdown against Anderson and then I expect him to lose to Ferrer. Reasonable choice.

Chiudinelli: competing in the same category as Johnson, this one looks even more dreadful.

Janowicz: disastrous draw. Lajovic is no slouch. Then Anderson and after that Cilic. This should have never even made it to the red carpet.

Anderson: he completes the triad of the "serving sector". One safe match. One question mark and one expected loss to Cilic in R-3. Now or never for him.

Goffin: the summer independant film blockbuster. Looks good for another win here.

Sousa: goes up against "Dancevic with Wolves" (sorry :cheesy:). He's the favorite of course but an upset is not out of the question.

Chardy: I thought long and hard about this one. He's a goner next round and his competition today is accessible; but he's too prone to upsets to take IMO.

Klizan: total crapshot.

This was a really hard day. I considered Chardy the longest but dropped him for the exact reason Drop Shot gave.

I expect Dodig to beat Lopez, which is easy to say after he won the first set 6-2, but I had that when the draw came out.

Don't trust Gulbis.

Saving Cilic for next round, and Baghdatis is on a 10-match win streak.

Chiudinelli was dominant in qualies, but no track record of anything.

Janowicz always on my no-pick list, plus he reached final of warmup, which bodes poorly.

Don't know anything about Sousa. Probably will win.

Anderson has had a strange summer. Probably a good pick.

Goffin got clocked by Rosol last week. No track record on hard courts.

Klizan no track record on hard courts.

So I went with Johnson, who happened to play for my brother's alma mater, USC, in college. Followed his career closely, and he's had a good summer, but definitely a risky pick. We'll see.

I agree but took Johnson anyway - didn't seem to be many good picks today. 24 hours ago I would've laughed at anyone who told me I'd be taking him today. I had a bad feeling about the Anderson pick...he's been so up and down and Cuevas did win a tournament this summer...albeit clay. That one was also scary for me.

He was the only viable pick with a solid H2H to go on (3-0). Anderson has taken me out recently, so I couldn't bring myself to pick him.

Even chances so far with both Chiudinelli-Marchenko and Anderson-Cuevas splitting sets.

Since today and tomorrow I'm not able to post early, we're back to post-match analysis:

91 made it here yet one was lost to NP.

16 Kohlschreiber: nice pick and even nicer after Llodra retired. His next match against Isner is a tough one and after that Nole. This was the last "safe" time to choose him.

39 Isner: this was my original pick. Looked good and transpired better. I backed down because I feared he might pull a Chardy and because of the draw (see Tsonga).

4 Tsonga: at first glance this looks premature. Looking at the draw he's slated to win his next match against Carreno Busta, but AFTER that, he gets Murray. He might win, but I'm not touching that, and if he does, he gets Nole -whom he won't beat.

5 Paire: *shakes head* He hasn't done much. Even him winning against Benneteau surprised me, so I wasn't about to pick him.

8 Verdasco: you'd think he'll win but he struggled mightily in his first round. I would've gone elsewhere; though he looks to be doing well.

8 Robredo: at first this looks like a nice pick BUT TAT's collective wisdom has taken notice of Bolelli's game and marked him as dangerous. Therefore this was riskier than it appeared. (and the scoreboard is reflecting as much).

3 Nishikori: good choice. Next round against Mayer could be trickier than expected. After that Raonic. This bargain has expired I fear.

5 Mayer: deceptively good hardcourt player. He delivered as much. I think he could trouble Nishikori but wouldn't bet on it. This one has DEFINITELY expired.

2 Coric: was there really any need?

1 No Pick decided he'd had enough.
