I think they cancel each other out when Chinese plays Chinese, Dry. You know, like using two negatives in a sentence.

My usual SP rule of when in doubt pick against the Canadians worked good today (and would've worked really good on men's side too.) Of course I have to make a couple of exceptions these days.

For the last SP's, a strange pattern has been happening. We have been losing more players in the men's side than on the women's, for the first few rounds. Then it evens out, and in the end nobody has been able to beat the draw in the women's while the men's have been conquered.
So far, the trend remains the same. The ATP lost 1/2 of its players, the WTA about 1/4. Uhm.......

Recently, favorites have reached the finals of and won the men's tournaments while the same hasn't been true for the women. To beat the draw, you need to have more or less "expected" finalists.

Karolina is the much better Pliskova - she only missed being seeded by a couple of spots. I was surprised by the number of people who took Krystina yesterday, who is barely in the Top 100 - I thought they might have had her confused with her sister.

I think I got them confused, too. :o
I went back to double check, because I was supremely confident when I made the pick, then checked and saw a match history that was mainly qualifying losses and got worried. I overlooked that there were two of them.
Here with the name correct it's much more straightforward looking.

I felt really smart making that pick. Then my heart dropped when I doubled checked the wrong one today.

Running this game, you get to learn all the same name players. I almost freaked yesterday when I realized there were two Zhengs playing (and I missed it), but fortunately, the two people who picked a Zheng both said Jie. Which was unfortunate, since SaiSai was the winning Zheng.

I know one pool we lost a lot of players one day because they picked the wrong Mayer.

Still, even if she's talented junior, which I thought that's the case, she has no experiense on the big stage and Domi is top 15 at this point

Serves me right for betting against a player in her home slam.

This is why I didn't pick Domi. The US players get great support from the cheering crowd, they make it easier for someone unfamiliar with handling the big stage rise to the occasion. They may lose the same match 6-0 6-3 at any other slam but they seem to figure out a way here. I'm not sure Melanie Oudin has been past the second round of any slam since her QF run.

195 - 52 = 143 advancing to day 3, and the 2nd round. Once again, we have lost over 50% of our original starting players after only one round :axe:

The men's side almost got there (50%) in one day. We must be slacking off or something. ;)

1208th to be exact.... Playing her first slam and first main tour level match. I also had little faith in Domi but thought this was at least a layup!

Pavs was my second choice too...doh!

Yeap, thought the same...

Lepchenko was my first choice. I was going back and forth between Varvara and Domi. When I went to make a pick first I put Lepchenko, but then changed it thinking I might use Lepchenko in the next round. *Sigh*

Cornet vs Hantuchova head to head match right now! Someone's going out in this one.

I picked both Cornet and Safarova, thinking that Radwanska has an easy path to the QF, especially after winning Montreal.

This bottom half is looking real tricky from here on out. D'oh!

Who knows, maybe Safarova will take me out today. ;)

I hope not! This might be Lucie's sweetest draw at a Slam ever. Plenty of beatable opponents if she keeps her head together. With her finally breaking through at a Slam at Wimbledon, I have high hopes for her to get well into the 2nd week here.

Yeah she's looking to the be likely QF'ist here. And Maria's been beatable lately. Perhaps a second slam SF for Safarova. (Then again, it is Safarova...)

Today's other picks:
Barthel - 1
Diyas - 6
Ivanovic - 3
Makarova - 8
Navarro - 3
Pennetta - 7
Stosur - 3

Keys losing is a big advantage for those of us who survived. :)

And Stosur following her is an added plus

I thought today was cruising along, not looking like a ton of movement in SP, but the end of the day is really turning into a bloodbath, nothing epic, but we're going to lose half of those left. Keys, Pavly, and Stosur all out.

We're down to 51, with Makarova (8) and Diyas (6) still to go.

Bellis' loss to Diyas is why I'm mad at Cibulkova. I understand she might be talented junior, but she has no experience on the big Tour, especially in the Slam, couldn't beat #48. Domi should have won on the experience alone.

She's promising girl though... but I'm still mad that Cibulkova took me out.

I'll be setting up an Updated Picks and Results Thread now since we are down to 51 (and since I am up at the Open, and it will be easier to manage an Updated thread).
