A mere 5 days ago, 357 starry-eyed hopefuls started their journey to suicide pool glory. After utter devastation unlike the men's pool has ever seen, only 43 (that is 12%) managed to navigate 5 picks and earn their way to the UPDATED Men's Picks & Results Thread. Congratulations all and, of course, good luck!

While the women's pool keeps outperforming the men's, now by almost 2 to 1, we march on to day 6.

28 Robredo: this pick just screams at you and I definitely approve.

7 Isner: while Isner is playing well and one suspects he'll get by today, these pickers should be warned that their last match was played at this very same venue and Kohlschreiber came out victorious. I would've looked elsewhere just to be safe.

3 Ferrer: this pick will get by today but will come back to haunt you as you run out of options.

4 Tipsarevic: I'll say I'm surprised he's even got here. Now I'll go against my own previous advice and predict him to win his match against Sock.

1 Gasquet: this is where it starts getting tricky for Gasquet. He should win but if he loses nobody will be surprised. One of the riskier matches to pick from today.

My pick (IF I were still alive): Robredo. Tipsy would be my second choice.

The updated men's picks & results thread is open after only the second round. There is simply too much red in the original p&r thread.

I finally made it to the updated thread, and tomorrow I'm leaving for cruise and not sure if I'll be able to have internet connection to make the pick. I wasn't planning on being "alive" at the end of the first week  Maybe I would have to purchase wifi connection for SP, which I'm sure my hubby wouldn't be happy about :)

I'm sure that somebody on board the ship would have a connection - or maybe there will a computer you could use for a few minutes - how does anybody go without internet

Apparently there is no internet, unless you purchase wifi minutes package and using the phone will be too expensive with roaming charges, but we'll probably purchase some minimal amount of wifi for checking emails and SP.

It's just funny how many times I got knocked out on day 1 or 2 and this one time I'm going on vacation during Slam I made it this far in SP on both sides :)

I'd offer to help, but seeing as I set a new TAT record for being the fastest to be double-cheeked in the history of the suicide pool, you don't want it. LOL!

Down 3-5, Robredo wins the last four games of the match.

36 advance to day 7.

Of course, just as I make the updated list, I go out with Isner. Story of my life, folks. :D
Almost double cheeked today too, but Ana pulled through. Had a great time as always though!

With only 36 left we head into the last of the "easy" days with 8 matches to choose from.

18 Wawrinka: even though Baghdatis blew up my predictions last round, I suspect Anderson had a big role in that. So now I stand by the Stan pick. He should beat Baghs and play Berdych next.... unless Baghs' resurrection is the real deal and we have another surprise.

6 Seppi: I wish Seppi had had better results as of late, because that would make this pick a bit safer. Still, I think he wins and plays Murray later.

5 Hewitt: always the gritty counterpuncher, does Donskoy offer enough power for Hewitt to do his thing? If not, Lleyton will may have trouble winning. 60-40% chance of winning.

3 Granollers: first of all, let me say I'm surprised Granollers is still being picked in the third round of the USO. It reminds me of Monaco this Wimbledon.... and we all know how that turned out... 63 dead. And like in that occasion, I think Granollers will win as well. Lets just hope for a better ending.

2 Berdych: IF you still have Haas/Youzhny/Hewitt to use next round this makes sense; otherwise you just placed yourself in a difficult spot.

1 Donskoy: I expect Lleyton to grind through, but the contrary would surprise few.

1 Haas: He's playing the unpredictable (and seeded) Youzhny. Still, he gets through. But, with Del Potro out of his section of the draw, might he be better used a round later?

I'm surprised anyone picked Seppi. His head to head domination of Istomin was built on 5-setters that could have gone either way and Istomin was tremendous in 1st 2 rounds.

Seppi and Granollers (who I stupidly picked) were choices with peril written all over them.

Day 7 final:

18 with Wawinka, 5 with Hewitt, 3 with Granollers, and 2 with Berdych advance = 28

6 with Seppi, 1 with Haas, and 1 with Donskoy out

With 28 left, now we begin with the really fun part. Where your past choices can come back to haunt you.

Having said that, today's picks are:

23 Federer: I have little doubt that he'll get past Robredo. These people are simply using him before his projected quarterfinal showdown with Nadal.

4 Raonic: this is possibly the worst match to choose from today. I wonder what the reasoning is here. Save Federer just in case Rafa slips up? No faith in Roger against Robredo? Unsure about the Rafa-Roger outcome? Having expressed my caution about this match, I think Raonic wins and falls to Ferrer next round.

1 Ferrer: The pick for someone expecting Ferrer to falter before the semis. To me, this pick is a round early.

My pick: Federer.

There will be a day 9 thread whether they play today or not. It is the other half of the draw and that half is already set. We will be expected to survive both picks.

I think I'm the only one assured of being in the pool tomorrow. That Raonic match is tight.

I didn't pick Federer, not because I didn't think he would win, but because it was too heartbreaking to think that I could only count on him to the quarters. I love him :( the fact I'm still in the pool is cold comfort.

That is exactly why I did not select Federer. If my Raonic pick sends me out, this post from the winner makes me OK with being a loser.:)
