View Full Version : Day 7 Pick - WOMENS AO SUICIDE POOL

01-19-2007, 04:08 PM
....and now, it gets interesting!

Welcome to Day 7 of the Australian. You've lasted to the Round of 16. And
everything from here on in gets more and more risky.

Please remember to check your picks and results to date - we hate
eliminating players because of duplicate picks, and its happened before.
Once you have used a player, you cannot use them again.

NOTE TO PLAYERS: Some 3rd Round matches are likely to carry over to Day 7 due to rain. You CANNOT pick a rain delayed match. Your choice must come from these four matches.

Day 7 features 4 Fourth Round matchups from the bottom half of the
womens draw.

Your picks are due no later than start of play Sunday, 1/21, 11:00 a.m.
Australian time, Saturday 1/20 7:00 p.m. USA Eastern Time.

Best of luck everybody!

Ohhhh shit. Now I kind of hope Hingis loses so I won't have to make this tough decision. I've already chosen Peer and Kuznetsova, and I think Jankovic will make the final, so I can't pick the top quarter. So now I have to decide who is going to make the semis on the bottom quarter. When I filled out the draw I had Vaidisova beating Mauresmo, but now I'm not so sure. To use a Charlie Brown reference (where my username comes from by the way, my first name is actually Geoff)...

Scary to see just 4 matches, and a couple I've already picked. I have two people I'm thinking of for today, but then I'll have to pick the other one next round, so I'll have to mull it over...toughest decision yet by far. I think I know who I HAVE to pick to have a shot, but I'll think about it first.

Funny to see another one with a no pick.

01-19-2007, 04:30 PM
Nicole Vaidisova please (if Hingis gets through)

01-19-2007, 05:26 PM
Svetlana Kuznetsova

Me and you aren't off the hook...Hingis has won so we both have to pick someone sometime today :)

I'm waiting for Hantuchova to make it through. If she wins, my next choice is Svetlana Kuznetsova. The only "sure thing" appears to be Mauresmo, and I think she'll make the semi's at least. Kuznetsova should beat Peer if both are playing well. I could see the other 2 matches going either way.

01-19-2007, 09:41 PM
Kuznetsova, if Hantuchova

This is assuming that the winner of Jankovic/Serena can beat Kuznetsova, which is risky, but I'm not prepared to pick Vaidisova over a Russian she should be able to beat after what she showed me in Paris. This half of the draw makes this waaayyy harder than any other pool I've been in.

And it could get wayyy harder if Bepa beats Sharapova...

01-19-2007, 09:45 PM
In this half of the women's draw, two of my picks have overstayed their welcome - Peer and Safarova - and, of course, Dementieva got me here.

That leaves me with an unpickable match (Williams v Jankovic) and Kuznetsova, Vaidisova or Mauresmo.

I think Kuznetsova is going to the final so she's out. If Vaidisova gets past Dementieva, she's going to the semis so I guess it has to be Mauresmo.

01-19-2007, 09:52 PM

1) Jelena is worth saving for far longer than today.
2) Allready used Kuzzy, and I think she beats Peer.
So that eliminates the top half of todays play.

I have a Vaidisova/Mauresmo 1/4 figured in my head. That means I have to pick the winner of that match now, because I need to save the winner of that match. So my pick today is also my pick to lose in the quarterfinals.

My Day 7 Pick: Nicole "Darlin' Nikki" Vaidisova

01-19-2007, 10:33 PM

01-19-2007, 10:51 PM
Kuznetsova please

01-19-2007, 10:51 PM
Assuming Chakvetadze gets through, I'll go with Kuznetsova.
Or if you could hear me say it out loud: "Kuznetsova?" Because I just don't freakin' know who to pick.

01-19-2007, 11:22 PM
Wow, this is getting really fun and HARD. I think I have no other option than to use KUZNETSOVA on day 7.

01-20-2007, 12:07 AM
Sigh, Mauresmo

01-20-2007, 12:17 AM
I may be painting myself into a corner, but my pick (if yesterday's pick get through) is Mauresmo.

01-20-2007, 12:34 AM
Hingis won, I officially made the second week (first time ever on women's side I think...)

First off, amazing to see Mauresmo picked by multiple people in the round of 16! This is probably the TOUGHEST choice of the tournament (much tougher than mens) because it's a huge unknown on this side - can Serena get back to form, some have the youngster Jankovic pegged to go all the way...VERY TOUGH.

For me, I have 3 options (since I'm saving the defending champ for at least one more round.)

1) Kuznetsova - She's the one I'm most confident in. However, if Serena were to also win, I'd have no chance at beating the draw...I just can't risk that - getting lucky once in a day is good enough.

2) Jankovic - Looking like a good choice, although who knows what Serena will do now. This means I have to pick the Kuznetsova/Peer winner to beat Jankovic, or pick them in the semis...I dunno if I believe that'll happen....

3) Vadisova - Perhaps the least likely of my 3 choices to win. However, this leaves me free to do whatever I want in the other quarter (if Serena wins my choice is easy.)

The goal is to beat the draw...and I think taking Nicole Vaidisova CZE (10) gives me the best chance of doing it, and the most options for later...so Nicole is the pick!

01-20-2007, 01:06 AM
Svetlana Kuznetsova FOR ME IN DAY 7,

01-20-2007, 02:29 AM
Nicole Vaidisova (if Safina beats Na Li)

01-20-2007, 03:10 AM
Elena Dementieva

01-20-2007, 05:27 AM
If Chakvetadze wins for day 7 I'll take Kuznetsova

01-20-2007, 05:57 AM
Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS (3)

01-20-2007, 06:50 AM
Mauresmo please, getting tricky :)

01-20-2007, 07:01 AM
I pick Nicole Vaidisova.

01-20-2007, 07:14 AM
(S)ha har! What fresh Jel(ena) is this? My chain, why dost thou Jank, o vic-tory? Nay, do I yet have the Will? I am s-o vague, but if I am to be kissin Kuzin to the Nets over which the balls travel Safer and Safer, I must be Lucid(e). As Julius Caesar said, "Ven(us)i, Vaidi(sova)i, (Roberta) Vinci". And so(va) what? I choose:

01-20-2007, 07:26 AM
Elena Dementieva

SNAP! We have ourselves a contest people. I love it when someone chooses the opponent of a popular pick.

01-20-2007, 07:32 AM
Elena Dementieva

SNAP! We have ourselves a contest people. I love it when someone chooses the opponent of a popular pick.

I also choose Elena Dementieva.

01-20-2007, 07:54 AM

01-20-2007, 07:58 AM
Don't fail me now Nicole Vaidisova.

01-20-2007, 08:00 AM
I'm trying to avoid the Serena part of the draw; nothing that goes on there would surprise me.

And I'm in trouble because I have four still in (Schnyder, Peer, Safarova, and hopefully Hantuchova)

This is more a strategy pick than a "she will win" pick:

Elena Dementieva

01-20-2007, 08:05 AM
Svetlana Kuznetsova for me please.

01-20-2007, 08:19 AM
Nicole Vaidisova please if hantuchova makes it thru

01-20-2007, 08:27 AM
Assuming my last pick still wins, I'll take Kuznetsova.

01-20-2007, 08:45 AM
Dementieva :-?

01-20-2007, 08:58 AM
Assuming Hantuchova survives her delayed 3rd rounder (far from a sure thing), I will go with Amelie Mauresmo. :o

01-20-2007, 09:16 AM
Mauresmo - although I really can't believe I'm doing this.

01-20-2007, 10:47 AM

01-20-2007, 10:49 AM

01-20-2007, 10:56 AM
Sorry Amelie, but I don't think you're defendin'...seems like a good time to use you.

01-20-2007, 11:16 AM
Provided Hantuchova gets by, I'll go w/ Vaidisova.

01-20-2007, 11:24 AM
Amelie Mauresmo

01-20-2007, 11:43 AM
Interesting picks...is everyone taking Amelie this round going to take Demetiva/Vadisova next I wonder? Should be fun watching what plays out. Being this deeply invested makes it interesting even if you lose...I'm definitely going to keep picking for my sake if I lose...

01-20-2007, 12:04 PM
Hope Chakvetadze wins. Next - Kuznetsova

01-20-2007, 12:25 PM
I'll take Nicole Vaidisova for the win!

If only it were as easy as answering "agree" or "disagree"...

01-20-2007, 12:43 PM
I'll take Svetlana Kuznetsova

01-20-2007, 01:06 PM
This is where you really have to think about what is likely to happen for the future. I've got 4 choices:

1) Jankovic
2) Kuznetsova
3) Vaidisova
4) Mauresmo

I suppose I technically have 6 but Peer and Safarova are the best bets in my book to lose. Since I've already taken Dementieva and Serena, I'm left with either correctly predicting who will make the semi's between Jankovic and Kuznetsova right now (if Serena is the one then it's all over anyway) or taking my chances with Vaidisova or taking Mauresmo now and hoping she loses to Vaidisova in the next round. Since I think Vaidisvoa is a slight underdog against Dementieva, I'm going to take my chances in the upper part of the bracket. And after a lot of thought I'm going with Kuznetsova.

Kuznetsova (3) is my pick

01-20-2007, 02:01 PM
bumping this up with two hours left

01-20-2007, 02:42 PM
I'm just glad to have made it this far! My pick is:

Svetlana Kuznetsova

01-20-2007, 03:33 PM
Almost as unpleasant as the men's pick...

Svetlana Kuznestova

01-20-2007, 03:46 PM
If Hantuchova wins Kuznetsova for me please

01-20-2007, 04:08 PM

01-20-2007, 04:18 PM
checked the emial box, and there was one more pick in there. that came in on time.

Didgeridoo33 pciks Mauresmo
