Hello everyone, though numbers fell dramatically after the Seppi debacle, 58 managed to stay alive. Unfortunately one perished to No Pick. Such a pity this far in the game to go down in such ruthless fashion... Alas, here are our picks:

Ferrer 54 vs Almagro 1: Ferrer leads their h2h (he's lost zero times IRC) and one suspects the tendency will keep on going here. The next match will probably be against Djokovic who's the big favorite so Ferrer looks the best option here.

Djokovic 2: I think he'll win, but one wonders what the pickers were thinking, maybe that a "tired" Nole will get past Berdych only to accumulate more miles and lose to the tireless Ferrer in semis.

One of the 2 had used Ferrer and Almagro previously, so I know the thought process there.

Yeah, I figure Nole vs Berdych will be another 5-setter and Ferrer has been on a roll this year. So was saving my Ferrer pick for the semis. Hope it works out.... Ferrer 1set and a break down though.

We only lost our lone Almagro picker (still feeling for him!), so we're down to 56 going into day 10.

The question today was "Which way will they go?"

We have our answer!

30 chose Murray today; and
24 chose Federer.

They should both win today, but who saved the right player for later?

2 chose not to pick. I guess they just couldn't bear it.

Yes, I wonder how many will save either one for the final and how many will go with Nole instead.

Welcome to the final stretch. We've all made it with some luck and timely choices. Now barring any upset (mainly Ferrer over Nole), it's all about how well we read the output hierarchy.

Of the 54 survivors:

Djokovic 22: maybe the safe choice (Fed-Andy is more of a toss up) but then again, you're depriving yourself from what I think is the safer choice for the final.

Murray 16 vs Federer 14: the split numbers reflect the uncertainty of the outcome. After the Tsonga match, I think Andy has to like his chances a bit more. Of course all of these people are banking on Djokovic to win it all and the winners should have a nice pick for the final.

Ferrer 1: true Suicide. Poetic.

There was 1 no-pick (who had no chance of winning a medal)

I would imagine that the other 21 Djokovic pickers were 10% relieved and 90% scared when they saw the 2 2 1 scoreline over Ferrer, because he has to be a strong favorite for the final now, right?

I think Djokovic is the favorite, yes. Two-time defending champion, loves Rod Laver Arena, is really in-form. I'd say he's definitely the man to beat. But I wouldn't count out the Federer/Murray winner.

Why are there more choices in the men's pool (11 as I count) and ten for the women? I'm trying to understand the intricacies of the play.

Do you mean more choices, as in more days for picks, Team Shore - they are both the same -
2 of each round through quarters = 10, plus one semi, and one final = 12.

There is one more pick in the US Open game, as the men play three days of 1st round matches, while the ladies play just two, so there you have 13 men's picks, and 12 women's.

The men's latest pick thread was worded "Men's Semis" instead of day 11. But, that thread is the men's 11th pick.

Officially, we lost the lone Ferrer picker last night. This leaves us with 52.

Of those, we will lose either 14 Federer's or 16 Murray's after tonight's semifinal.

But, we will also lose a group of those who won last night with Djokovic, depending on who they are holding for the final. By my quick count, of the 22 who had Djokovic last night, 14 are holding Federer to win the title and 8 are holding Murray to win the title. So, we will lose one of those groups as well.

suliso

My quick analysis indicates the following medal count:

Djokovic def Murray 8
Djokovic def Federer 6
Federer def Djokovic 5
Murray def Djokovic 5

shtexas
01-24-2013, 11:09 AM
I'd imagine the numbers are higher. For example, if Federer wins tonight, those 14 advance (holding Djokovic), plus 14 of the Djokovic winners from last night (holding Federer). Then, we'd have 14 winners if Novak won or 14 winners if Roger won.

shtexas
01-24-2013, 11:23 AM
Djokovic def Murray 16
Djokovic def Federer 14
Federer def Djokovic 14
Murray def Djokovic 8

All depending on those surviving making their pick for the final (yes, we require that and there will be a thread for it).

Much larger than this. More than 100 I think... (women's draw at RG during Justine's prime)

shtexas

I think there were around 30 winners of the women's RG pool in 2007. Justine was part of it, and rain played a part in lowering the number of picks you needed to win.

Officially, there are 24 players left - 16 holding Djokovic and 8 holding Murray.

Again, later today, there will be a thread for your men's final pick. Even though we know who you have left, YOU MUST MAKE IT OFFICIAL BY MAKING YOUR PICK IN THAT THREAD.

Oh, boy. I think I made a mistake. Was a supposed to pick a winner for each semi-final?

No, Mainer - one pick from the semis - you needed to save one player for the final.

Sadly, however, you have now used both Murray (in the QF), and Nole (in the semi), so you ran out of picks, and don't have a finalist.

Mainer Scott
01-25-2013, 08:15 AM

That's a fantastic result for your first go-round. We've got people that have been playing for years that have not gotten that far.

Congrats, and hope you'll come back for the French. We also play practice games for Indian Wells and Miami, and you are welcome to join in for those.

I wasn't really worried about Federer beating Murray --Murray was the fresher, better player --but I'm worried about the final. Djokovic should win, and if he plays well, he will win. If he's a little off, though, and Murray serves like he did against Federer, it will be really tough.

I'm looking for my first medal in seven years of entering most of these, the first two years with a different screen name. This is the first time I've gotten to the final.
