Welcome all to the first Slam of the season. We kick off with a healthy contingent of 349.

Also, with day 1, we have our first bandwagon of the year:

Mr Felciano Lopez 82: facing a qualifier, this always erratic player later goes up against Stepanek and IF he should some how accidentally find himself in R-3, it's Nole time. So yes, this is a good choice.

Querrey 55: too early IMO. I have him making R-4.

Baghdatis 26: two easy rounds and then a showdown with Ferrer. Nice pick, but I have a feeling he might upset David.

Anderson 47: one of the hotter players going in to the AO; I think he also takes out Monaco next round, and maybe even Verdasco later. Yet, this is the one time where you are "safe" picking him.

Harrison 25: Giraldo can be tricky, and Harrison hasn't shown much lately. Unnecessary risks here.

Melzer 11: *shakes head wondering what Jurgen has done lately*

Karlovic 13: maybe some novices picked him, may this be a lesson, Ivo UNDERPERFORMS at Slams. If you happen to survive stick to top ten seeds; you've already used up your luck quota.

Verdasco 3: an enigma in a riddle surrounded by mystery. Goffin is dangerous. Fernando is erratic; he could lose or make R-4.

Youzhny 8: I like this pick and also for next round.

Monaco 7: I think he can muster this win, next round, I'm not so sure.

Baker 7: against another qualifier, he then goes up against Querrey Still, I'm not convinced.

Janowicz 7: Mr Paris. Can he back up last year's results on the big stages? One could do worse than pick against Bolelli, but still, I wouldn't be too confident.

Kamke 3: if I had to choose, I'd go with him, but boy, do these people love adrenaline.

Fognini 3: plays Bautista Agut who had some nice results earlier this year. Much too risky.

Nishikori 5: way too early.

Roger-Vasselin 4: another DO NOT PICK. In this case, for OR against. Just steer clear when you see his name.

Wawrinka 17: Stan should make two rounds before facing Querrey (to whom I say he loses).

Almagro 6: I never thought I'd say using Almagro in R-1 outside of Roland Garros was too early, but I think he's making a run.

Stepanek 1: Russian Roulette BYOB (bring your own bullets)

Malisse 3: streaky guy should win to face streakier guy Verdasco

Goffin 1: he has a chance. Not a big one, but a chance.

Berlocq 3: OK you know he's a clay courter, but his opponent just begs to be picked against. If it goes wrong, you are forgiven.

Bautista Agut 1: he beat Berdych recently... is he on the upswing?

Donskoy 2: he faces Ungur "the Bandwagon killer". Another SP scar that I would avoid.

Kubot 2: yikes! (though a sound choice given his R-2 foe)

Phau 2: he should win. I'd just look once it's over... cause it might not be pretty.

Benneteau 1: upset alert!

Dimitrov 1: and I give thee the upsetter

Muller 1: another risky choice doomed in R-2 if he wins.

Andujar 1: lots of risky picks. I think this one depends more on which version of his opponent (Malisse) shows up.

Millman 1: I think this will be one short ride.

The Fognini, Phau, Muller, and Millman pickers all need to be turned red. That leaves 32 knocked out on day 1 by my count: Monaco (7), Andujar (1), Goffin (1), Fognini (3), Karlovic (13), Millman (1), Kubot (2), Phau (2), Dimitrov (1), and Muller (1). Does that look right?

Welcome back everyone... at least everyone who survived yesterday (317 of 349).

Off the bat we have 18 who decided one day was enough and called it quits. Wise choice sanity-wise.

The rest who endure this test have chosen as follows:

Davdydenko 71: many are betting his Doha ways continue... and they should, but with Kolya you just can't be sure anymore.

F. Mayer 40: without even looking at his opponent, that's a lot of people riding a player who has had some bad results lately. He should win... but again, it's not a given.

Dodig 31: should win over Wu.

Tomic 18: nice pick.

Klizan 10: hmmm, Brands just handed in some nice wins before the AO. Risky pick.

Soeda 10: plays an Aussie WC, so yeah, he should win and then lose to Tsonga

Lu 9: another nice pick set for doom in R-2.

Simon 19: this was my first pick... but then I remembered Simon withdrew last week. Was he being cautious? Is it serious? I didn't want to find out... besides, he can prove his health and be a nifty R-2 pick.

Bedene 1: another player with some wins under his belt. I think it's too early to pick him in a SP, but he might just win.

Becker 6: and here we have Bedene's opponent. I'd just close my eyes and hope for the best.

Chardy 17: uhhh, nice selection. Plays a Spaniard I've never heard of.

Granollers 6: slight advantage over Zemlja.

Seppi 16: another good choice. I see him making R-3.

Istomin 5: coin toss

Garcia Lopez 2: worthy choice. Loses in R-2 to Cilic

Cilic 3: I'm not expecting great things, but he's good for at least 3 rounds.

Stakhovsky 1: he could win... and then against F. Mayer... who knows

Bellucci 3: I think he can pull off 2 wins before succumbing to Tsonga yet Kavcic can be tricky.

Haas 3: normally this would be a great choice but Nieminen tends to play well these Oceanic tournaments making me uneasy.

Falla 3: I can see this happening. Gasquet awaits next.

Gasquet 2: speaking of which... way too early (I can't believe I'm saying that about Richard)

Raonic 5: easy 2 rounds, then risky match against Kohlschreiber and if he wins, Federer.

Rosol 3: he "should" win even if this isn't Wimbledon.

Kohlschreiber 15: Steve Darcis can give players headaches every now and then... and Philipp is prone to streaks. I would've waited until R-2 to pick him.

I didn't count but it went back and forth - neither player seemed to be able to win points on the others serve in the tiebreaker until the final point - so probably four or five at least - maybe more.

After a relatively safe Day 2, 279 reach the third session. Although we don't have final numbers yet, here are the picks:

Wawrinka: excellent choice. I think he'll lose to Querrey and even if he should win, he gets Nole next. Well picked.

Anderson: this is a good choice, but unlike Wawa, I think he'll survive next round. Still, it'd be a risky pick against Verdasco and then against Berdych so yeah, this was good timing.

Melzer: he already surprised me by winning one match. This time it's definitely goodbye.

Baghdatis: sheesh, many good choices today. He plays Ito (against whom he should win) and then bow out to Ferrer. Only concern here is that he's already gone 5 sets and Marcos is prone to an upset.

Youzhny: idem Baghdatis.

Nishikori: he has two more wins, then Ferrer against whom I think he has a fair chance. I'm saving him just in case since this is the soft quarter.

Almagro: one "should win" against Gimeno Traver, then a "favored to win" against Janowicz, then "bye bye" to Tipsarevic.

Janowicz: another timely choice. Should beat Devvarman and lose to Almagro later.

Benneteau: he plays Roger-Vasselin and you all know how I feel about this guy, so yes, you're pushing your luck.

Tipsarevic: much too early, specially in the Soft Quarter.

Querrey: you could have saved him for Wawrinka, but still, this is a solid choice. (I backed out because Baker makes me nervous at Slams)

Verdasco: last chance to use Fernando "safely" if such a thing exists in suicide pools and in the realm of Verdasco.

Stepanek: you just had to walk the wire. I have a bad feeling about this.

Very good number. Of course, there's also been some lopsided match-ups (not that some didn't end up going five sets).

Drop-shot
01-16-2013, 04:58 PM
So we began the day with 253... still 3 opted out and took Mr No Pick. With 250 eligible picks we begin the breakdown:

Philipp "Bandwagon" Kohlschreiber 127: he's starting to make a habit of carrying large groups through, but there's a saying in spanish "from going too much to the fountain, the bucket breaks". Fortunately, I don't think it'll be this time.

Tomic 41: I still don't trust Tomic and Brands, as I've said before, makes me uneasy this time round. Otherwise, excellent choice before Tomic tanks to Roger.

Cilic 22: nice choice. I'm wondering why I didn't take it myself... Still, Cilic should also be a good option next round against Seppi.

Kavcic 9: yes, he plays Duckworth, but was the risk really necessary?

Simon 24: this was the last chance for a "safe" Simon pick. Next lies Monfils and should he win, Murray follows.

Raonic 2: we all know what Rosol can do in R-2s :cheesy: Just kidding, Raonic should win before a real test against Kohlschreiber.

Florian Mayer (FM) 8: I think this horse should be thankful he even got here, so picking him to go further is pushing it. Be ready to bow out.

Monfils 6: idem Simon (noting that I think Gael will beat Simon)

Gasquet 3: he'll win, but you've just wasted an excellent R-3 pick.

Nieminen 2: as much as I hate big gambles, I think this one just might pay off.

Tsonga 1: still too early.

Berankis 1: gutsy choice, but hey, he goes up against FM, so why not?

Seppi 3: initially I pondered this pick, and I still think it's a win, but there were less riskier options out there. Anyhow, he's done for next round against Cilic.

Granollers 1: see those people lining next to you? They're waiting for the blood drawing to begin.

Welcome all to Day 5! 239 made it to this day, sadly 6 were bitten by the No Pick bug and 1 made an unvalid pick. Of the 232 who made picks, many have to thank the monster bandwagon of Kohlschreiber that got them though. Now that we've seen that horde get by I'm betting we won't see another...

Wait... what's that? I stand corrected...

Nishikori 146: the easy pick today, he then faces Ferrer (60-40 Ferrer IMO) and then would come Tipsarevic (again, beatable). Still, now is the moment.

Tipsarevic 28: yeah, he'll win today, but I feel he might've been more useful as next round's pick and before Ferrer in quarters.

Verdasco 23: ay ay ay... that's a lot of people banking on a streaky player who goes up against an in form Anderson. A loss here would surprise no one.

Wawrinka 8 vs Querrey 3: Both advanced thanks to retirements from their previous opponents. Originally I thought that Stan would lose this one, but checking his H2H he's ahead of Sam... so what I'm trying to say is that this one smells like a 5 set rollercoaster. Slight advantage Querrey for my money's worth.

Anderson 3: a toast to those who gamble! I'm not one to gamble of course, but I have a good feeling about this one.

Berdych 4: same as Tipsarevic, easy win today, but I feel he might've been of more use next round.

Ferrer 4: these people are either banking on a Nishikori win or a Tipsarevic win down the line, otherwise, they've just boxed themselves in.

Almagro 11: brave choice. It says here that he wins and maybe easily at that, but with him there are no guarantees.

Janowicz 2: he's had his run and this is where it ends- barring some Paris magic.

I was worried about trusting Reeshard as well, but do I feel much better about Tsonga, the guy who basically quit against Klizan in last year's US Open? Not particularly. And who the hell knows about Monfils? What is it with us having all these undependable Frenchman to choose from on a single day? Didn't really like the choices today myself. Simon/Monfils? No thanks. Already used Cilic, no way I'm taking a chance on Seppi. Used Kohlschreiber, not confident enough that Raonic will beat him (or conversely, that he won't beat PK and Federer). Murray, del Potro, Federer all need to be saved. That left me with Tsonga or Gasquet. I trust Tsonga more in general, and I think Dodig is better than Kavcic.

204 made it to Day 6 though we lost 2 more to the NP endemic. The remaining 202 chose as follows:

Gasquet 88: plays Dodig, and should his form hold he'll get through. Then the plot thickens. Originally I'd given his next match to Tsonga, but after looking into their h2h, Gasquet leads  So now I'm not so sure. Anyways, now is the moment to pick Richard since even if he does beat Jo, he gets Federer next.

Tsonga 39: he plays Kavcic and should win. He's still my bet to win next round's affair.

Cilic 55: one of the wiser picks since he gets Del Potro next. Only cause for concern is that Seppi has wins over Marin on hard and carpet.

Simon 9 vs Monfils 2: one of the matches of the night. Gilles leads the h2h and Gael went 5 sets in his last match; still, this was a time bomb and I wasn't going anywhere near it. These people better duck and cover. My gut leans towards a Monfils "upset". Whoever wins, they go down to Murray next round.

Raonic 6 vs Kohlschreiber 1: they've never played before making this completely unforeseeable. Both come in in good form. These people better take some Xanax and have booze at hand to temper the drama.

Del Potro 2: these folks have no faith in him. He's an excellent choice for next round against Cilic if you want to avoid the whole French affair of picking between Tsonga and Gasquet.

Yet here I am, coming back to him, like a junkie craving his fix......the fix that is the rollercoaster ride of the suicide pool......not at any other type of fix (as Richard's lawyers have asked me to point out).

I'm sure Reeshy Reesh has turned a new page this year. A nouveau reesh if you like. And progress is going to be smooth and serene.

Actually, he's normally very reliable in the first week...............

My two cents on the Gasquet-Tsonga debate: although Tsonga is a 100 percent lock to win and Gasquet was not quite that assured of winning, I wanted to save Tsonga in case Federer loses to Tomic. I expect Tsonga to beat Gasquet (five years ago, I exited this pool when I picked Gasquet over Tsonga in the same round they will play in this time), and I would expect Tsonga to beat Tomic in a quarterfinal.

Oh we'll, out with Cilic. Woke up in the middle of the night, glanced at the scores on my phone, and he was up 2 sets to 1 and 2-2 in the fourth. I went back to sleep, only moderately appeased. When I woke up an hour and a half later, the match was over, so I thought he had won, as I wrongly assumed a fifth would have made it longer. Oops.

Someone earlier wrote about calculated risks being what this game is all about, and it just didn't pay off. The irony is that with delpo losing, I would have had to make a pick for tsonga/gas quest, avoiding which was the whole point of picking cilic in the first place!

Good luck to all survivors!

Day 7 Men's Picks -

We ended day 6 with 142 players.

However, 5 decided not to come back and make a pick today, possibly because they had no idea what to do on day 8 with Chardy-Seppi. So, why not just give up now?

We also had one dreaded double-pick, who used Almagro for the second time.

So, we start the day with 136:

119 picked Berdych. Can't argue with that since Novak would be his quarterfinal opponent.

7 picked Tipsarevic versus 6 picked Almagro. I kinda like the Almagro pick since Janko is coming off back-to-back five setters.

4 picked Ferrer, clearly not expecting him to see the semis.

136

Good luck!

And here we are, quite a large number (127) if I do say so myself. One more person fell ill to the No Pick virus and one made an invalid pick (double pick).

The rest:

Today's bandwagon comes courtesy of Andreas Seppi (66) vs Chardy (5): though Seppi would've been my choice as well I don't want to go out because I chose Seppi. They've never played each other, so we have no background and both have exceeded their expectancies here. Chardy is supposedly injured, but still, one wonders if he is just downplaying his chances and if Seppi will be able to exploit this advantage and handle his nerves.

Tsonga (53) vs Gasquet (3): even though Gasquet leads the h2h (barely), we confide in Jo's steadier results at the slams. We're not easy picking Jo but it's now or never since he then faces Roger and the other quarter imploded leaving 2 question marks facing each other.

For all of his beautiful shotmaking ability, Gasquet has a mediocre return of serve, which makes it incredibly tough for him to beat Tsonga in a best-of-five set match. There were too many free points for Tsonga, particularly at critical moments when he got behind trying to serve out the first and third sets.
