If you can believe it, Eurovision 2012 has its first entry already.

Let's take a look at last year's winner first though:

Baku, the site for this year's contest, is a lovely and beautiful city. I have proof. (http://hassam.hubpages.com/hub/25-Most-Dirtiest-Cities-In-The-World) Times 2 (http://www.theworldgeography.com/2011/10/top-9-most-inhospitable-places-in-world.html)!

Switzerland's national final was on December 10th, and they chose Unbreakable by Sinplus. There's nothing too special about the song, and it probably shouldn't make it past the semifinals. vABC05lIeh4

I've been following Romania more than any other country since the last Eurovision contest because of their dance music. I especially like this worldwide hit from around a year ago:
sS76eS34Y0c
While this song won't be eligible, I hope that Alex, Elena Gheorge (representative from 2009 (http://youtube.com/watch?v=0kizLKALHm4)), Paula Seling (representative from 2010 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8iALS6-l7c)), or Edward Maya and Vika Jigulina (http://youtube.com/watch?v=dy2nBvtkgyE) will represent Romania this year instead of the crap they chose on New Year's Eve last year. Luckily, this year's national final will be later than last year's.

Albania
http://makegif.com/g5FV.gif
The second entry to Eurovision 2012 is from Albania. Rona Nishliu won Festivali i Këngës with Suus. Two things I don't understand about it: 1. It's way too long and I'm not sure how they'll shorten it enough for the contest (correct me if I'm wrong, salmon, but I think the limit is 3:15). 2. What the heck is up with her hair? That thing scares me.

I don't think this song's likely to do too well, especially without the orchestra. But this is Albania, and they tend to change their songs more than any other country before the actual contest.

The first of the powerhouse nations has made its selection. Soluna Samay will represent Denmark with "Should've Known Better". It's nothing special in my mind, but I could see it doing pretty well come May. It's at least a step above Albania and Switzerland anyway.

Cyprus made their selection today. Ivi Adamou will represent them with "La La Love." I was surprised that this was as good as it is, since Cyprus traditionally hasn't come to Eurovision with great songs. I think it's my favorite so far, and it should make the final easily. My only knock on it is that it's too repetitive, but that's what you tend to get in Eurovision.

I like it, too. And you weren't kidding about it being repetitive. I wondered at one point, "Why isn't this song over yet?" That was at about the 1:55 mark.

France "released" their song today. I use the quotes because both the singer and the song name were already known, and it looks like there's only an audio version circulating around the internet. Oh well. This song seems to jump around from one idea to another a lot, and that kind of bothers me. It's still better than either of the first two in my opinion though (Switzerland and Albania). Since France is one of the Big 5 countries (including Italy, UK, Spain, and Germany), it gets a free pass to the final. I doubt it'll do too well there.

Norway

http://makegif.com/g5Xq.gif
Norway's song is probably my favorite of the contest so far, but I know a lot of others don't think so. Basically, if you liked Eric Saade's "Popular" last year, you'll probably like this. If you didn't, then you're out of luck. Tooji's already been accused of being an Eric Saade wannabe, and rightfully so. The song is what it is though, like it or not. My guess is it'll be successful, though not as much so as "Popular", which finished second last year.

Well, salmon, Germany's song may not suck, but it's nothing to write home about, certainly not on the level of Lena's 2010 song. All videos of it have also been taken off of YouTube due to copyright. I don't really understand how the process for this national final worked, but it seems that two people sang the same three songs, and the audience chose between the two people and three songs. Here's a music video anyway.

Ukraine's selected singer was apparently very sick yesterday, so much so that she could hardly talk. So while she doesn't sound too great in the following video, I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt for now. Turkey selected a unique and slightly comical song. It sounds to me like the singer is drunk, but that might just be me. I think it's supposed to be a drunken sailor's song though, so he might be trying for that. I have no clue how this song will do, but I kind of like it.

Austria's song is somewhat of a joke, but I have to say it's a good one. It's about the opposite of their selection last year. Its title translates to "Shake Your A**" and it includes such lyrics as "your a** has an opinion". Oh, and the band's name is Trackshittaz. I think that says about enough.

Jedward were indeed selected for the second straight year, Morct. Their song this year isn't as good as last year's was though, and it doesn't really seem to fit them. They have the same kind of jump-all-over-the-place dance moves and that doesn't really fit as well to this song as it did to last year's either. I have to say I don't see them doing as well this year; they definitely won't be in the top 10 and possibly won't even making the final.

Spain selected from three songs for Pastora Soler, and I have to say that they definitely chose the best one for Eurovision. Moldova has some of the weirdest Eurovision songs out there. This year is no different. The song is in English, but I could hardly understand a word of it. And when people start riding other people as horses...Eh, that's Moldova for you.

Greece really is out of money. They had their national final in a shopping mall, and not one of the songs was sung live. They didn't announce anything about the voting other than who won, and their stream on the official Eurovision website died. Nevertheless, they chose a decent song (I think, hopefully it's good live).

Now we're essentially done with national finals, but there are still a few more songs to be announced. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro will both announce their songs on Thursday.

Italy, after saying it would not change its song, did so anyway today. I have to say I prefer the old one. This one's chorus doesn't quite fit with the rest of the song.

San Marino's song is about Facebook, of all things. It's an unusual topic for a song, and I doubt it will work for Eurovision. It'll be interesting to see it performed live though.

I was expecting something upbeat and possibly having to do with the fire theme of this contest. The hosts instead chose a song that's downright depressing. It might be an okay song, but it's not really Eurovision material.

Belgium

http://makegif.com/g6NK.gif

Belgium had a two-song national final in which both songs were sung by the same person. They're both ballads, and neither is extremely impressive. Belgium alternates between Flanders (Dutch-speaking Belgium) and Wallonia (French-speaking) getting to choose its song. Wallonia is usually awful, and last year was no different. This year is a Flanders year though, so I had at least some hopes for it, which I guess weren't totally let down.

It's strange to see someone like Engelbert competing in Eurovision. It really feels like he doesn't fit there. I don't think his song is going to do too well since most of the voters for Eurovision are going to be younger, but he'll definitely be popular among the older ones. My mom, for example, was brought to tears by it because she was reminded of my dad.

I'm not sure that it is older people that vote, I think it's actually younger people but I stand to be corrected. Ireland has the same problem as the UK as regards the voting, it tends to be neighbouring countries that vote for each other.

San Marino

http://makegif.com/g6LT.gif

As previously mentioned, San Marino was forced to change its song. Instead of doing the wise thing and scrapping it altogether, they instead changed a few lyrics to replace Facebook with Social Network and such because the European Broadcasting Union accused them of essentially advertising Facebook. This version's even worse than the previous one.

Now that's all of the songs. I plan to put the songs alone in a separate thread soon, and also to pair each song with a tennis representative, if anyone would be interested in reading that. The first semifinal will be on May 22nd, the second on May 24th, and the final, which the contest will be based on, on May 26th.

Over the next week, I'll be revealing which songs I think can win this year's Eurovision. Last year I wasn't overly successful, but I at least listed Azerbaijan. Hopefully this year works out a bit better. First up though, I'll go through the songs which are in the top 10 of the odds posted above but which have no chance of winning.

Togtdyalttai
04-23-2012, 12:44 PM
Germany (16/1): I don't know why this is ranked so high in the odds. There's nothing special about the song, his voice, or the performance. I'd say it is more likely to finish in the bottom five than the top five.

Togtdyalttai
04-26-2012, 09:25 PM
Ireland: As I've said before, the song and the performance just don't fit. This should do at least 5 places worse than Jedward's song from last year, which finished 8th.

Togtdyalttai
04-26-2012, 09:28 PM
Since I missed a couple days, it's time to catch up.

Spain: I really like this song, but it's Spain. Anyone remember this? It finished second to last. That said, I think this should be top 10; it just doesn't have any chance of winning.

Togtdyalttai

Denmark: This song is okay, but Denmark has sent better. They'll probably finish in the top 10 again, but still a safe distance away from the winner's circle.

Togtdyalttai
04-27-2012, 10:04 PM
United Kingdom: Engelbert would be the oldest winner ever, but I think his music is just too outdated for most of the ESC fanbase.

Togtdyalttai
04-27-2012, 10:07 PM
Russia: Ah, the Babushki. How people think they'll win is beyond me. True, Russia has a huge bloc voting deal going for it, but this isn't the song that's going to take them to the top. In fact, if they do win, I'll upload a YouTube video of me doing their dance.

If this were a televoting contest early, this song would be my favorite to win. However, the jury factor will probably shoot it down, just as it came close to doing in Romania's national final. I'll give it a puncher's chance though.

Iceland (Bet 365 odds: 20/1, My odds: 25/1)

Iceland is a country that has produced a number of good songs, most notably the one below, but has never won. This song's a bit of a wild card in my mind. Although I could see it winning with a great performance and a great draw, I could also see it in the bottom 10 of the final. A lot of things would have to go right for it to win, but I do think it could happen.

Serbia (Bet 365 Odds: 14/1, My Odds: 10/1)

Zeljko Joksimovic has a history of Eurovision success. In 2004, he came in second with Lane Moje, finishing behind only what is in my mind one of the best Eurovision songs in history in Wild Dances. Lane Moje and Nije Ljubav Stvar are very similar songs, and I foresee similar success.

Italy (Bet 365 Odds: 7/1, My Odds: 8/1)

Last year, Italy came in second with a mediocre song, shown below. Can they take a slightly better one this year to the top? That logic usually doesn't work in Eurovision, but maybe it will here. Maybe Italy's just going to be a vote-funnel after its comeback to Eurovision after an 11-year hiatus.

Although I do think there's a good chance of this song winning, I also think there's one that it could flop and finish in the bottom half of the final. I also still think Per Sempre would've fared better than L'Amore Femmina.

Although there are things that can go wrong, I have to say that this is the surest winner since Alexander Rybak's Fairytale in 2009. It has a great performance, and it stands out next to any other song. It's a near-unanimous fan-favorite, and it should be a jury-favorite as well. I have FINALLY made it through all the songs on Eurovision TV!

I want to know what's wrong with the Malta song? Why is it at 150/1? Politics? Because I love that song. It won't win, but that was the one that made me dance in my office chair. For a lot of people, Malta is just a bland pop song that doesn't stand out in a crowd of songs. Malta also doesn't have a lot of countries that typically give it points, so it struggles to advance to finals. In fact, a lot of people are billing that song to finish dead last in its semi.

So is Malta your favorite? Or Ukraine? And if you have a top 12, you should post that here. :p I'm planning on posting my top 10 soon.

My one question about the Malta tune was that it might be a very years too late. I love the chorus.

My top 12 in no particular order are (and here you get to see my ultrasophisticated scoring system! :hyst: ):

Iceland+
Sweden++
Italy
Azerbaijan
Spain
Hungary++
Serbia
Macedonia
Malta+
Ukraine+
Turkey-
Norway

The ones that finished in the middle "meh+" group are:

France
Germany
Greece
Romania
Estonia
Slovakia

All others are a meh, meh-, or NO! Which is probably where most of the top 10 will come from, seeing as I'm terrible at this.

I just don't get the Russian entry. And even if the little old ladies are really adorable, I just think singing on pitch should be a requirement for a song contest.

The only entry I couldn't finish because I hated it so much was San Marino. It's basically Rebecca Black on heavy peroxide. Just hated it.

41. Lithuania (0.5/10): His voice is HORRIBLE.
40. Montenegro (0.5/10): I never understood what was going on in that song.
39. Albania (1/10): I guess this song is bearable until she starts with those high notes, but that's enough to take it down more than a few notches for me.
38. San Marino (1/10): The newest autotune princess had a bad idea for a song.
37. Slovakia (1.5/10): I just can't stand hard rock.
36. Bulgaria (1.5/10): This song seems to be all over the place and her voice is annoying to me.
35. Switzerland (2/10): I think this is in English, but I still can't understand a word of what they're saying.
34. Germany (2/10): Another one whose voice annoys me.

Another thing that makes me hesitant to rate this very high is that I haven't heard it live (no one has since she's sung it on playback every time). Its music video is below, and it's very strange. The video doesn't fit the song at all.

9. Iceland (7/10): I like the instrumentals and the song's pretty good, but it's not really my type.

8. Serbia (7.5/10): I love the instrumentals in this song even more than Iceland. There's something about a Zeljko Joksimovic song that just stands out. I should mention, that along with Lane Moje, he's also composed two other Eurovision songs. Here they are below.

7. Greece (7.5/10): You know how I've said that Ireland's song doesn't fit the participants? Well this one does quite well. It's a pretty simple song, but it's catchy.

6. Slovenia (7.5/10): This song is often compared to Molitva, Serbia's winning song from 2007. That song is one of my favorites, and although I don't think this is quite as good, I like it too.

Today was the first day of rehearsals for Eurovision. 9 countries participated. If you want to see them, click this link (http://www.youtube.com/user/eurovision).

5. Latvia (8/10): It's a bit of a joke song, but it's catchy and funny. The song talks about itself quite a bit, which makes it more interesting for me. Anmary, the singer, is quite funny too. I'll post one of her interviews later so you can see what I'm talking about.

4. Spain (8.5/10): THis is my favorite ballad of the year. Pastora's voice is, in my opinion, the best of anyone in the contest, and I love how the song gradually builds up to a climax near the end.

3. Norway (9/10): Yeah, he's a Saade clone, but I don't mind that. I like this song better than "Popular" too, with its Middle-Eastern twist.

2. Sweden (9/10): This song is epic. I would be very happy for it to win, especially with all the hype behind it. People often tend to get tired of a song that has so much hype to start with, and then not vote for it. I don't think that's going to happen with this song, but if she has a bad performance then all bets are off.

1. Romania (9.5/10): I've always been a Romania-lover since I started following Eurovision. This year is no different with a catchy Dance song and a bagpipe and an accordion to boot.

If you're wondering which songs I would give a 10/10, there are 3 of them since 2006. Here they are, from lower rating to higher.

The first semifinal is tomorrow, so I think some predictions are in order:

I'll do this by the chance I think each country has to qualify.

>95%: Greece, Romania, Russia

~75%: Iceland, Cyprus, Denmark, Ireland

~50%: Finland, Belgium, Austria, Albania

~25%: Latvia, Switzerland, Israel, Hungary, Moldova

<5%: Montenegro, San Marino

If I were to choose between the 50% songs though, I'd say Belgium doesn't qualify.

By the way, the first semifinal is at 3:00 EST tomorrow, and it can be seen here (http://www.eurovision.tv/page/baku-2012) in HD, provided you install the Octoshape plug-in.

Here are my predictions for the second semifinal in the same format as the first. I got 8/10 right in the first semifinal so let's see if I can do any better here.

>95%: Serbia, Sweden

~75%: Macedonia, Ukraine, Turkey, Norway

~50%: Netherlands, Slovenia, Croatia, Estonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina

~25%: Belarus, Portugal, Bulgaria, Lithuania

<5%: Malta, Georgia, Slovakia

Here I'll say that Croatia fails to qualify.

Well I got 8/10 right again, but I really can't believe that Malta qualified. The contest will be posted momentarily, and you can see all the qualified songs in the songs thread (http://www.talkabouttennis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=20631).

Even after all this time and all this discussion, this has now totally sneaked up on me. :(

Not surprised Sweden won, of course ^_^

Agreed and agreed. Liked the surprise result Albania got (love it or hate it, but dang she can belt out some notes!) and I've got Turkey's song stuck in my head :cheesy:

Deserved victory indeed, but there have been more memorable Eurovision songs in the past. My favorite from the recent past is Iceland 2009. :)

Watched at a bar with some tennis people.

David Cross (aka tobiasfunke) was also there, wearing a Team Jedward T-shirt :)

I'm fine with it. A well earned victory. But Spain really should have been #2.

And the Russia act was really cute. But I just think people should sing on pitch for a singing contest. A primitive notion, I know.

Poor Romania, they got hosed. :(

I'm happy that Sweden won though.

Now hopefully the government of Baku/Azerbaijan will do right by all the people they made homeless or near homeless to make this song contest happen.
