I received an email from a member this morning telling me that they received a "Database Error" after refreshing a forum page.

If anyone else receives any errors, please post about it here.

Our server needs a RAM upgrade. I've been putting off an upgrade because of the expense involved. But if this error begins to be a regular problem, We'll have to go through with the upgrade.

I had the same problem this morning, though it lasted for only about five minutes.

Yikers! That's when this other error appeared.

I receive email alerts almost daily about database errors, but until this morning, they haven't appeared on the forum itself.

Thanks, Miles.

I was afraid of that. My inbox was just inundated with errors being sent to me from the server. :(

It looks like the current storm is over.

Thanks for verifying this for me.

We're still having these problems. I'm currently working with our host's tech. support on finding the problem and getting it fixed.

These database errors are happening more frequently. I'm in a conversation with our host's tech. support and we're working on the problem.

I'm going to take TAT/PTN/TP offline tonight for up to an hour at some point between 12am - 2am (EST) while I make a few changes to our server. (We probably won't be down more than 10 or 15 minutes, but it could go as long as an hour.)

=============
Added: Our server may be unstable for the next several days. If you're kicked off the forum, or receive database errors, it's probably due to the work we're doing on the server.

I just got one a few minutes ago.

Yeah, I saw that. :(

Tech support is going to be messing with the server for the next several days... starting immediately.

My apologies for any errors this may cause.

We're definitely having problems with our server. There may be times during the coming week when you're unexpectedly kicked off TAT, or receive database errors.

I'm working with our host to get this fixed as soon as we can.

Again, my apology.

Please let me know if you find anything odd or out of the ordinary happening on TAT during the next week.

The shut down is over. Because I have tech. support on the problem, and they've already made some positive changes, the downtime tonight was minimal; about 1 minute.

I'll keep this thread updated as we continue to troubleshoot the problem.

Even the database was shocked into silence by that Roddick performance.

I received a database error over night. Although just one error is a massive improvement (I've received 100s in the past) it's still not good enough.

Anyway, just wanted you all to know that we're still working on the server and there could still be some odd behavior until we get it worked out.

I'm still working on the problem.

I know this doesn't help, but I have not received even one through the lifetime of this thread.

I'm back in touch with tech support. I sure hope we get this figured out before this coming weekend. :o

Tech support will be actively working on our server again. This might cause errors, slowness, etc. for the time being.

I'm this close to taking this on myself; bypassing tech. support altogether.

If TAT is completely offline (along with PTN and TP), it's because I've totally wrecked the server.

I have a tech support guy who's familiar with our forum software and willing to work on it. We might go offline while he does some stuff.

Kirkus
08-25-2011, 08:02 PM
We're definitely going offline for a bit. I'm sorry, but I have this tech guy now and I want him to fix the problems we've been having.

Kirkus
08-25-2011, 08:42 PM
It looks like he's done already!

Kirkus

Can someone verify that the forum is zippier? Or is it just me?

::

What could have taken hours to do, our tech support guy (who knows our forum software) did in less than 30 minutes.

Please continue to post error messages here if you receive one.

The last time I was on was between 6 and 7. I was playing some Yahtzee games during my work break. Things seemed awfully slow.

I have noticed a big difference in the past 30 minutes or so since I got back to TAT.

Fingers crossed!

Just to keep everyone updated...

We've had some major changes made to the forum's database. For those who understand, or care, after many years of use, the tables were severely fragmented. The entire server was taken offline tonight and the tables optimized (defragmented). The engine that writes to the database was also changed.

Performance should be much better, and optimizing the database in the future should be easier; something I can do (as soon as I learn how) without taking the server offline. However, these changes that were made tonight will make it a little easier for the database to become corrupt. Not a lot easier, but easier nonetheless. Because of this, I need to take more timely backups. These backups takes less than 5 minutes, but I'll need to do them every other day at least. Everyday during SPs. In order to do the backups, the forum has to go offline.

Since the recent changes were made to our database, I've not received a single database error. *knocks on wood*

So far so good.
