View Full Version : Mens SF (Fri) Wimbledon SP Pick

06-30-2011, 07:34 AM

Good day, everyone, and welcome to Day 11, and the mens semifinals of the 7th annual TAT Wimbledon Suicide Pool. 46 of you remain going into the semis - but have you saved the correct combination of players to beat the draw, and be this year's winner?

Be certain to check the Update Picks and Results thread prior to making your choice for the semis.

Today's choices are from the 2 semifinal matches of the Men's Draw.

Post your Day 11 pick by replying IN THIS THREAD. Your pick must be in before the start of play for the day in London, rain or shine, that is, Friday, July 1st at 12:00 Noon London time. For those in the US, London is five (5) hours later than the east coast (7:00 AM), and eight (8) hours later than the West coast (4:00 AM). Don’t be late as we hate making those hard decisions, but we will. The thread will be locked at the deadline, so don't wait until the final minutes. If it's locked, you are out.

If you change your mind after you make your pick, and before the deadline, please make a second post advising us of your change - PLEASE DO NOT make your change in your original post, as we often go through the posts before closing to begin the task of updating the picks and results, and we might miss a change if you edit your original pick.

NOTE: If you survive your Day 11 pick, and are a contender for the finals, we have a prize for our winner courtesy of Jon Wertheim of Sports Illustrated. Details of the tie break will be made available Friday.

Good luck!

The Day 11 matches are:

Rafael Nadal ESP (1) v Andy Murray GBR (4)
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga FRA (12) v Novak Djokovic SRB (2)

Open for our remaining players. Good luck all. Looking forward to seeing your chosen path to the title!

This is my final pick , regardless of the result
I will not have anyone left that I can pick

It has been a good run - my best ever showing - wish I could have made it all the way

This is only my third suicide pool, and I'm thrilled to have made it this far. I've enjoyed competing against my fellow tennis fanatics. It's been a lot of fun!
As for my semifinal pick, fortunately I still have 3 of the 4 remaining players alive, and Frenchmen have been good for me so far in this tournament. Here's hoping another French player can carry me into the finals!

Semifinals pick -- Tsonga

Viva la France!

Jo Tsonga!

06-30-2011, 10:29 AM
My pick is Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

06-30-2011, 10:35 AM
Rafa Nadal

06-30-2011, 10:42 AM
Federer's loss was tough for me. It means that on one side, I'd have to pick Tsonga, hope for the notable upset, and possibly not make the finals. Or I could pick the Nadal/Murray match, possibly make the finals, and hope that Tsonga pulls a double upset to win it all.

And after much back and forth, I've decided that my Semi-Final pick on the Men's Side is...

06-30-2011, 10:43 AM
Djokovic. Never been so nervous about a free contest before! :)

06-30-2011, 10:52 AM
Rafael Nadal

with fingers and toes crossed

I have both of the favorites left - Rafa and Novak... who do I pick to make the final over the other person for the championship?!?!?!?! (Murray is awesome, but let's see if Rafa can overcome his "maladies".)

I'm a RafaKAD and it's sooooo hard not to pick him to win. Since I don't have the will power to see Novak holding up the championship trophy, ...

I pick Novak for my day 11 winner please.

I just want some Good Tennis!!!!!!!!!!

06-30-2011, 11:43 AM
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, please.

I saw Roger getting through all the way. But JW screwed that scenario.
Now I don't see anybody beating Novak.
But I already used him so I am doomed.
Unless JW pulls another upset.

So the only way I believe I can beat the draw is by going with Tsonga:

Men's SF: JW Tsonga
(Which means I picked every top french in this pool, except Monfils).

If my post here is wrong, please delete it. I rarely if ever look at this thread after I've been out before, but I'm so intrigued by the picks on the men's side that I couldn't resist.

Good luck to all that remain.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

Rafael Nadal for the semis, please.

06-30-2011, 02:11 PM
Novak Djokovic (I was thrilled when Fed lost and all the Djokovic pickers last round looked in trouble to beat the draw, then McEnroe killed my buzz by saying Tsonga was 5-2 career vs. Djokovic. Why is nothing easy in this game?)

06-30-2011, 02:48 PM
like quite a few others, I have little choice but to say....

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

06-30-2011, 03:34 PM

I can only use Rafa or Novak but who to choose. Novak burned me in the Oz Open when he retired ill and I've never forgiven him. I have never got far enough to use Rafa.

So here goes.

Day 11: Rafael Nadal please.

06-30-2011, 04:19 PM
Nadal please, thanks!

06-30-2011, 04:51 PM
This is my first suicide pool, and I have done so much better than I expected. Thanks for this wonderful contest.

I've already used up Djokovic and Murray, and seeing as Federer lost, my best bet to make it all the way is to go with:

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

06-30-2011, 05:36 PM
Picking for my Mommy GVGirl and I'm very angry with her pick for Friday - Andy Murray. :(

Mommy when you get back home we'll have to talk.

06-30-2011, 05:42 PM
My semi-final pick is: Novak Djokovic

06-30-2011, 05:50 PM
Why is nothing easy in this game?

I think the easy part was creating the game, Calvin_Hobbes. Everything since has been a collective nightmare for the couple hundred of us that play each Slam.

06-30-2011, 05:59 PM
Wanted to write a sort of explanation/discussion post for my pick. Like "on the one hand this and on the other hand that", etc, etc...
But I guess it won't be interesting to anybody but myself :)

Anyway, here goes

Ahhh. This is such a tough one.

I'll take Nadal, please.

lol. I gotta say, Moose, this game is the most fun I have stressing myself out, though. Thanks for putting it on. Trying to beat the draw for the first time in 5+ years! I'm starting to come up on 0-for-40! :)

This is fun, I've got 3 players to choose from and you can again make a case for any of the three. And the one guy I can't choose (Murray) is also a potential winner. My pick is going to Rafa Nadal. I had originally thought I would pick him to win the tournament but I've changed my mind.

06-30-2011, 09:09 PM
I'm swimming against the tide, I see. Goin' out on limb. Bucking the trend. First chance to beat the draw since Rafa won his first Wimby and sent my hopes for a Wimbledon medal down the drain. Can't think of any more cliches, so it'd better be: Novak Djokovic!

I'm in the exact same boat. I almost wish I had already used either Tsonga or Djokovic so that my decision would be easier. After going back and forth all day, I think that Tsonga will beat Djokovic tomorrow. Putting all my faith in him in hopes of beating the draw!

Jo-Wilfred Tsonga please.

As much as I'd love to see him win this thing- AND as much as I wish I could pick Novak right now- since I don't think he'll win the tournament- I think the winner of Murray and Rafa will (so I have three players in play), I am going with- and, like with my ultimately going with Maria to win this whole thing- I truly hope that Petra and Jo can ruin my chances at getting some new pretty little imaginary medals, my choice is......

06-30-2011, 10:39 PM
Tsonga please. I have never got far enough to pick Rafa. The only way I can beat the draw is to pick Tsonga. I'm already stressed out sigh. Good luck everyone.

Tsonga, please.

07-01-2011, 04:02 AM
Closed. Good luck all.
