WELL- I sure as hell had nothing to offer for V today.....but, my fellow Lopez fans- I was there live for the end of the second set, the third set (where Lopez had to save a match point) and the fifth set. AND trust me on this- we all have no business still being alive here in the Pool. :o

It would have been about 15 of us left if Lopez had lost that match point... And only about 8 with the big 4 still intact!
What a shame...

Serious question: What happens for the picks tomorrow if Nadal does not show up? Can we take Fish (his opponent) and expect Murray to beat him, or do we have to pick in the other three matches?
Because some logic would be to pick Murray, who would lose to Nadal (hypothetically, I know). But I would pick Fish, who would the lose to Murray, if Nadal does not play his match.
I hope I am making myself clear.

I think it's a moot point. Nadal's camp said nothing came up on the MRI and he will likely play.

Thanks. Have not seen that news.

For what it's worth: MRI showed no serious injury and he is supposed to play.

Looks like it's a moot point, but if you picked from that match and then Nadal withdrew after Start of Play, you'd either lose if you picked Nadal or go through if you picked Fish. If Nadal withdrew today, the match would not be eligible.

nadal wont be withdrawing but i think fish has a great chance to win it anyway. just announced they are playing 2nd match at court 1. jo-willie and rog are center court 1st up

The sticky situation is what happens if he were to withdraw after the thread is opened ... and after people make picks... but before the thread closes.

Also, if he were to withdraw early, that could potentially screw beating the draw for a lotta people too.

My computer has died and I won't be able to get online later today, so I'm posting my Day 9 pick here since an official thread hasn't been started yet for doing so.

Bobby, I saw that you posted this in the wrong thread (the P&R thread, instead of the Day 9 pick thread. I caught it, and placed a separate post in the Day 9 thread, so I would not miss it when I update things in the morning.

Day 9, and all 50 remaining players get their pick in. And they all stay with the top 4, so no one is looking for an upset today. Let's see how that works :)]

Today's picks:

#1 Novak "47-1" Djokovic, with 21 picks
#2 Andy "don't call me Anne" Murray, with 20
#3 Rafael "how healthy is he?" Nadal, with 6
#4 Roger "GQ" Federer, with 3

While the 21 Djokovic pickers are through to the next round, methinks Fed's loss just made their path to beating the draw much more difficult.

Not if you haven't yet used Jo and have at least some confidence in the scenario that Novak was going to lose to either Federer or Tsonga in the next round... Which is where my head was last night.

Now I'm wondering if Jo can win this whole thing.

Well stated. Particularly by someone who picked from the other side of the draw :)

Very few people have actually used Tsonga already. And I think, after a quick scan, that only one person has picked Tsonga & Djokovic.
Still wide open.

When's the last time a male player took out the #3, #2 and #1(or even #4) consecutively at a Slam?

Never?

But if anybody can do it, Tsonga can. His game is made for this stuff. Majestic.

I don't know the answer, Craig. If I had to guess, however, I would say never.

My one fear for Tsonga is that he is playing without a coach. So I wonder who is doing the scouting/prep work with him. He's experienced, and he's certainly played all these guys often enough, but I wonder if that will become an issue.

I have some great shots of him from IW's practice courts this past March that I have never posted. I'll have to try to get them up tongiht/tomorrow.

I believe that's the key to victory.

He'll have to figure it all out himself. That's why he said he has no coach now. He's trying to become a man.

By my totally unofiicial count out of 46 suicide-poolers still in game,
36 have three players left (16 have used Djokovic, 15 - Murray and 5 - Nadal);
8 have two players left, one from each side (5 have Nadal and Tsonga left, 2 have Nadal and Djokovic, and 1 has Murray and Djokovic);
and 2 players have used both Djokovic and Tsonga already and thus cannot beat the draw.

We started the semi finals with 46 players still alive - sadly, we have a no pick, which takes us to 45. Our remining selections:

1: Jo-Wilifred "Tsurprise!" Tsonga, with 22
2: Rafael "Hey, I won this twice" Nadal, with 11
3: Novak "1 loss all season, and this is the respect I get" Djokovic, with 7
4: Andy "No Pressure" Murray, with 5

We'll be saying goodbye to a number of players no matter what today - thanks for joining us for the game this year - also want to remind those that survive the SFs that we will have a tiebreaker for the prize offered by Jon Wertheim at SI - details will be announced tomorrow.

Then there were 23.

Now the game comes down to Rafa/Andy, and then who those people who have today's winners saved for the final pick.

If I have the math correct, eliminating today's players, and those who will go out because they do not have a remaining pick:

We will definitely have some people beating the draw.

5 players who used Djokovic today have saved Nadal for the final (angryduck, calvin_hobbes, irena2, nblaquie, and thumm).

10 players who used Nadal today have saved Djokovic for the final (Csgnyc*, dougforte, finn mccool, Herodotus, ironmike, Luvs10s, mayorghouliani, mick1303, mu_royals, and orangeboy).

Everyone who beats the draw will get a medal - and as I said above, one winner will be receiving a prize courtesy of Sprots Illustrated.

* - Csgnyc was our Mens' French Open winner, so he is looking for the French/Wimby double.
