My fellow equestrians,

You are cordially invited to participate in the 2011 edition of TAT's Smarty Jones Stakes!

At the onset of this contest, we will give each participant $10,000 to spend as he or she sees fit. Bets will be placed by players before each of the three triple crown races, as soon as odds are posted. You may bet as little or as much of your money as you wish on each race, betting on as many or as few horses as you like.

A horse selected that wins will pay out in full. A horse that comes in second will pay out half, and a horse that comes in third will pay out a quarter. There will be no exactas or trifectas or any of that silliness.

We look forward to seeing all of you on the tracks, as this contest trots along.

Stay tuned for the specific details, but picks will be due before the start of the race on Saturday, May 7.

If you would like to start scouting your selections, feel free to visit http://www.kentuckyderby.com/

Scoring will work as it should this year, making it so you cannot lose money while a horse of yours still places. For example, betting $1000 a horse with 2/1 odds that comes in second will pay $2000 back.

I can't find the original. This was a follow-up from Jack. But it's not the same without the original.

By Jack (from TAT)

Another Love Set from Evert?

Is the hot, hot, hot romance between tennis great Chris Evert and former Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones back on? "The Insider's" Pat O'Brien reports having seen the two canoodling together during one of his trademark cocaine-fueled visions at the Pure Nightclub in Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas.

"Chris and Smarty look to be an item again," O'Brien claims, "They shared several bottles of Cristal, and were nibbling sugar cubes together all night."

When told of the story, Evert snorted "That's preposterous. What Smarty and I had together is over. But he suffered some big losses at the blackjack tables that night so I consoled him, and fed him some hay to lift his spirits. But to say we're together is ridiculous. In fact, I arrived at Pure with Joe Namath, and left with Wayne Gretzky."

Jones, too, denies the report. When asked to comment, the 2004 Kentucky Derby winner said "Neigh, neigh."

O'Brien is sticking by his story. "There's definite chemistry between the two," he maintains. While the jock-loving Evert was also seen having intimate conversations with pixie gymnast Mary Lou Retton, a life-size cardboard cutout of Larry Bird, and Tiger Woods' putter, O'Brien insists she's found love again with Jones. "They both had stars in their eyes."

Let me explain how the odds above work, since we used a different format for them last year. Using Dry's gray Twinspired as an example, the odds for that horse is +5000. That means that if you bet $100 on that horse and it comes in first place you'll get $5100 back. If Twinspired comes in second you'll get $2600, and so on.

Scoreboard has been posted here (http://www.talkabouttennis.com/forum/showthread.php?p=652605).

Happy Mother's day, mom! My mother gracie leads the pack by far with $74,000 after the Derby. She heard on NPR that Animal Kingdom might be a good pick. 30-1 payout: I'd say so! She is a bit disappointed that she didn't go with her original amount of $3000 on Animal Kingdom and $2000 on Nehro though.

Ptmcmahon is in second with $33,000 after cashing in on both Nehro and Mucho Macho Man, both of which paid out 3-1.

Waylandboy-tw is in third with $29,500 thanks to betting on all three of the horses that paid out. Unfortunately for him, he only bet a total of $4,000 on the three though.

Also coming out on the plus side was DdVogt with $12,000.

See you in two weeks at Pimlico for the Preakness! Odds will be posted at least by Thursday, May 19th.

I wanted to go there so badly, wayland. After his Derby run, I thought the distance in Baltimore would be ideal for him in terms of holding off the closers. But even I had, I probably would have backed off at the last second given how he was acting in the post parade. Seriously, he was awfully rank. It turns out that was a good thing. And then after the race started, the pace was absolutely blistering at the beginning and he was right up there... Didn't think he'd hold on. But he most certainly did.

He's my idea of the perfect horse that blends the right qualities in Thoroughbred racing. He has the speed to linger around the top and the stamina to hang on at the end.

Belmont won't suit him, though. At least I don't think so. Just too much ground for him. But then again, the pace times in the first several furlongs of the Belmont tend to be fairly slow. So who knows? I think recently there was a horse that went wire to wire at Belmont because the pace was so cumbersomely slow over the first mile.

I agree with you that I don't like Shackleford for the Belmont either. He got a great post (I'm a sucker for a 5 horse) and he was a good risk for the shorter 1 3/16 length as I'm not sure he would have held off Animal Kingdom if it had been the extra 1/16 as it was in Louisville.

I laughed during the NBC telecast when Donna riding her horse during the prerace said something like "I don't like anything about Shackleford". The whole television crew was down on him in the prerace and they even mentioned how he should tire, especially with how much energy he was expending prior to entering the gate.

It's hard enough on this site trying to figure out tennis players in these contests:) Trying to figure out these animals is nearly impossible;)

With an extra 1/16, his bigger problem might have been Dialed In.

So strange... Here's a distance that, out of the three legs in the Triple Crown, favors Dialed In the most. Yet, he's not even in the field. Would have been better to skip the Preakness and aim for this one, I'd think.

Who would've guessed?
Win: Ruler on Ice
Place: Stay Thirsty
Show: Brilliant Speed

I was just telling Mary that the favorite(s) rarely win.

I think I may have decided this contest by updating the scoreboard incorrectly about an hour ago. :o Waylandboy-tw has won with $67,000 edging out Ptmcmahon, who bet the same amount of money ($14,000) on Brilliant Speed as he did. No contestant bet anything on either the winner, Ruler On Ice, or the second-place finisher, Stay Thirsty. Waylandboy-tw only won because he left $500 in the bank. Interestingly enough, TennisAnyone74 came in 3rd, if only because she neglected to bet anything on the Belmont.

In other news, ESPN.com just wrote an article that simply says "Ruler On Ice won the Belmont Stakes." "Article" here. (http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/news/story?id=6652057)

Even if everyone ended up getting slaughtered in the end, it's fun.

Thanks, Tog, for running this! Already looking forward to next year's Derby!

Congrats wayland. I wanted to come back and change my bets after you posted figuring you had enough money to cover us all...unfortunately the deadline came between leaving work and getting home. I probably would've dumped more on Brilliant Speed and picked a completely different second horse...so I might've had a chance!

That's why I like this contest: everyone is trying to make the move that will give them the most chance when the Belmont comes around. Problem is, even giving yourself the best chance doesn't really mean anything with how unpredictable Horse Racing is.

As unpredictable as horse racing typically is, this has been an especially "off" year.

I still think Dialed In's connections miscalculated by opting for the Preakness instead of the Belmont. He would have loved this distance. Not sure he would have liked the mud, though.

Well darn these graduation parties and work and such! They all kept me from checking back to bet. On the other hand given my track record of picks, that may have been divine intervention so I at least had some money left to come in 3rd! :p

Edge of Reality, coupled through the wagering with seventh-place finisher Snake Pit, was dispatched while the 5-2 favorite. He was coming off another-place finish from the Curlin Stakes at Saratoga Race Course during his stakes debut July 26. The dark bay or brown colt ran his earnings to $354,555, not including the mascots sold on online sales (http://www.crazysales.com.au/).

Winning to the fourth time in five tries at Parx, Side of Reality paid $7.80 and capped a $108.40 exacta over 10-1 Speak Logistics. The trifecta with Uncaptured returned $484.60.
