Hello everyone!

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/53/Eurovision_Song_Contest_2011_logo.png

Can you believe it? Eurovision 2011 is only 81 days away!

The semifinals (May 10 and 12) and final (May 14) will take place in Dusseldorf, Germany this year, on the back of Lena Meyer-Landrut's victory in Oslo last year

QtLw_A_wBRM

This thread will contain the waving flags we all love so much, as well as videos of each of the expected 43(!) entries. Four countries (Austria, Hungary, Italy, and San Marino) have returned to the fold for Eurovision 2011, making this year's edition tied as the largest in the competition's history!

Here we go! Leave any and all shame at the door.

I think Romania's songs from both 2009 and 2010 were my favorites, but this sucks.

Switzerland, however, is decent.

On the back of Germany's win, Austria returns for the first time since 2007, which means I had to schlep my cookies all the way over to 3dflags.com to get their wavey one. You're welcome.

Belarus

2011 Eurovision Song:

Asz9f-9SxiE

Straight up, unadulterated propaganda, set to an absurd beat with folk instruments. Could hardly love this more.

Belarus was bound and determined to get something pro-Belarus entered this year. Their first two attempts (both disqualified) were titled "Born in Byelorussia" and "I am Belarussian."

I actually like Lena's entry better than the one that won last year, which I didn't care for at all. What's the precedent, Salmon? How does Europe react when a country wins and comes back with the same type of entry that won the year before? Seems to me like most people would make a point of NOT voting for it.

Anxious to see what Belarus does with that song during the live show. It'll either be folk dancers or nearly naked muscle men dancing on boxes.

But I like Azerbaijan the best. It's really a neat song. Though I've never really understood the point of duets that involve no harmonization.

Why not nearly naked muscle folk dancers? :cheesy:

In general, host countries/defending champions haven't done great in Eurovision lately. No host has even made the top five since 2004. There's almost no precedent for the winning singer returning the very next year (hasn't happened since the 1950s), but I would have to think people will feel wholly uncompelled to vote for her again.

I do like her song, though. Even if it's really ill-suited for the setting. Will probably have more to say when I hit the Gs in the alphabet :).

oh no, it's in alphabetical order?I think I saw Ireland up-thread somewhere, but yeah, Albania, Armenia, Austria.... :wall: So sorry, Salmon. I really didn't mean to mess up your thread.

About Lena's new song: I like it too, actually, but I find it sort of cheap to have the winning performer go back....Like you said, the hosts won't win anyways and isn't eurovision also supposed to be a chance for new faces to get some international exposure? The casting show they had last year was really fun. The "Let's find a song for Lena"-show they had this year was just a Stefan Raab (her producer) overkill.

Of the last two groups, the only ones I could manage to finish were France and Bulgaria. Probably my two favorites so far. Azerbaijan is third in my book at this point.

I think if Norway can win Eurovision with what they did two years ago, France can win with this number. To win, you have to have some kind of a quirk. That was were Iceland fell short a few years back. Great song. No quirk.

Except he's really not THAT good of a singer compared to internationally renowned singers of the same genre who bring an operatic sound to, well, something else. I still like it, though.

The first one was already posted in this thread, but I'll put the music video here since that one isn't.

RgE3bDH647M

The next one is also already posted, so you get the lyrics. I still don't understand why an Estonian would write a Eurovision song about a street in New York City with only residential housing on it. Oh well, it's catchy.
xVo1yjukV9E

Now to the songs that haven't been posted. This song had an English Version, "Present," that was released and rumored to be the official version for the contest, but it was awful. Luckily Magdalena switched back to Polish.

rmWpcyVj1L4

Now for probably the most polarizing song on my list. Some may call him Manboy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klEuRNG6EQ0), or even Manwhore, but I am an Eric Saade fan. He's got a lot going for him, though not quite as much as last year's song would've.

Nfx0OMM2u0A

Now for my number one. It doesn't have the hype of many of the other songs in the contest, but I love Maja Keuc's voice, song, and last and least, her looks as well. This song was originally in Slovenian as Vanilija (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDvYZ1cvu7A), but I don't really think it's lost much in translation.

Well, Tog, I absolutely LOVE your odd number picks, with Azerbaijan being my personal favorite of those, followed by Slovenia and then Poland. But I fear you're going to be right about the Swedish entry. There's always one tune I absolutely despise that either wins or comes close to it. Not sure why I hate it so much. And even though I hate it, I totally understand why you put it at #2. And who knows... Perhaps by the end of the contest it will have grown on me.

I don't know what I think about the Estonian entry yet.

I know Sweden's entry is polarizing, and that's why I don't think it'll win. In fact, here's a poll that people said it was worse than Rebecca Black's Friday (http://escforum.net/forum/showthread.php?18445-Which-song-is-worse).

These aren't my picks to win the contest though. Slovenia, for one, has no chance because they aren't in a good position politically. My pick to win might just be Bosnia, even though their song is nothing special. I also think the song below might do well.

While I'm at this, I might as well profile the nations I think can win Eurovision, in order of increasing likelihood from my perspective. I'll start tonight with numbers 10 and 9.

10. Azerbaijan:

Well, as it is #10 it's definitely a long shot. It's not getting nearly as much publicity as their entry from last year. It'll take a good draw and a lot of help for Azerbaijan to win, but heck, I had to include one of my favorites if I could.

It's an interesting song, and it's weird to see Denmark being represented by people so obviously British. This is the first of three Scandinavian entries that will appear on this list, and there's a good chance they'll play a great part in helping each other to win if that is what ends up happening.

When I listen to this song, I think it's not anything special. Then I think about it some more, and it's not so bad. On a side note, Norway's about the last country I'd think would be represented by a song partially in Swahili. Also, I have no clue what's happening in the video.

I won't repeat what I said in my favorites list, but I will say that Estonia's probably getting a little too much love from the bookies. There are a lot of people that like the song, but not many that like it better than any other.

Well, this song is the oddsmakers' favorite. Ask me why, and I can't give you an answer. In my opinion, this is BY FAR the worst song on this list. But, as Salmon has told me, when there's UK hype, believe it. If it wins, I'll be quite disappointed in the Eurovision voters.

Lately in Physics class, I've been working with polarizers. I thought about this song, and it seems to me that Eric Saade would be a much better polarizer than any piece of optical glass. People either love this song or hate it. We'll see which ones win out.

Before I say anything else about this song, I must admit that his voice is pretty bad. But the song's catchy, and more importantly, it's Russia. Russia always finishes better than they should in Eurovision, and this year should be no exception. Last year their song was downright awful, and they still finished just outside the top 10. Three years ago it was hardly any better (though they did have Yevgeny Plushenko on their side) and they won the whole thing.

When I first heard this song, I thought it was just some old guy who liked to stomp his foot. Can't say I've really changed my opinion much, but there are still too many people that like Dino Merlin. He's probably going to be the leading vote getter in the Balkans, which encompasses about a quarter of all the countries in Eurovision. That'll be a great start, and I think there's a good chance it'll take him all the way to victory.

Thanks for the list, Tog. But I really, REALLY hope you're wrong, even though your reasoning makes superb sense. :)

Sorry for not getting all the songs up, people. Life intervened. I'll at least have the semi performances up before the final for contest evaluation purposes.

So here are my favorites, in order, from the first (crappier songs, stronger blocs) semi:

Norway
Russia
Hungary
Azerbaijan
Finland
San Marino
Armenia
Serbia
Albania
Poland
Switzerland
Turkey
Iceland
Greece
Malta
Georgia
Portugal
Lithuania

And here are the countries I think will qualify:

Norway
Russia
Azerbaijan
Armenia
Turkey
Greece
Georgia
Finland
Serbia
Hungary

Watching the first semi final at the moment. Wonderfully cringeworthy performances, as always :cheesy: Portugal was just, like, WTF? The girl from Lithuania has got a pretty decent voice!

The 10 finalists from semifinal 1 are:
Serbia (not too surprising, it's a middle of the road song for me)
Lithuania (Wow! I sorta like this song but I thought it'd be bottom five in this semi)
Greece (One word: diaspora)
Azerbaijan (Best song of the semi in my opinion--yes, I said I liked Poland more but their performance was poor)
Georgia (Can't stand this song or its accompanying lights)
Switzerland (Anna got a great reception and deserved to make the final)
Hungary (I was hoping it wouldn't qualify, but knew it would)
Finland (Boring song, should be at the bottom in the final)
Russia (Top five lock)
Iceland (What the heck? This song sucks and has no business going through.)

This was a SHOCKER for me. Armenia has never finished outside the top ten ever, and they're out in the semi. Turkey hadn't ever missed a final and hadn't finished outside the top ten more than once since 2003, and they're out in the semi. Norway was a HUGE bookies favorite and an awesome song, and they're out in the semi.

Iceland I thought did a really good performance, but I don't get what put Lithuania through or kept Norway out :(

And Hungary is my favorite out of this group now.

Semifinal 2 is in 3 hours! Here are my predictions for who will qualify:

So here is my personal ranking of the second semi, which includes my three favorites in the whole contest and ten of my top seventeen.

Sweden
Belarus
Ireland
Macedonia
Estonia
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Slovenia
Latvia
Denmark
Israel
Slovakia
Moldova
Bulgaria
Netherlands
Austria
Cyprus
Ukraine
Romania
Belgium

And I think the ten qualifiers will be:

Sweden
Ireland
Bosnia & Herzegovina
Slovenia
Latvia
Denmark
Israel
Moldova
Austria
Romania

But I would obviously love to see Belarus through. Fetch, fetch song.

Your qualifiers from semifinal 2:
Bosnia and Herzegovina (entirely expected, but they'll go early again which is not good for them)
Austria (sounded great, should be a top10er if she sings like that again)
Ukraine (how awful!)
Moldova (what the heck? I didn't see that coming at all)
Sweden (great reception but didn't look quite as good as at Melodifestivalen)
Slovenia (:banana::yahoo: Go Maja!)
Romania (snorefest!)
Estonia (in with an outside shot at winning)
Denmark (it did how it was supposed to)
Ireland (very...energetic, large shoulders)

I haven´t really been following this year but have been watching a bit of it. So happy Moldova picked Zdob si Zdub. They delivered with a basically cracked-out performance (I hear the same about their live shows)

Georgia went with something super-odd too, but not in a fun way.

And sad story for Iceland - one of their bandmembers died a few days before
