View Full Version : I REMOVED THE 2 MOST RECENT TOPICS...

It was suggested to me that they were getting "more like the ESPN board". At first I took offense... I couldn't have heard anything that could have pissed me off more. It was that very atmosphere that brought TAT to life.

Then I went back and read the threads. Both were started by my co-administrator, Sebastien, with very light, general observations about the last 2 debates. The topics broadened, as often happens, but I didn't see anything that resembled the hatred that permeates TOB. What I saw was intelligent, opinionated (even "heated") discussion, backed up with thoughtful research (nothing like the ESPN board).

Having said that, however, I only pay the bills here. It's your community. And I can see how others might not enjoy such a strong discussion... especially during such a heated campaign. Can they just decide to not read those boards? Yes. But I think about the guest, possibly coming over from TOB and seeing a similarity, and just turning around and going elsewhere.

Perhaps I shouldn't have deleted the topics. If you think I was wrong to do that, tell me. If you think it was the right thing to do, tell me.

Above everything, this has to be a place that guests will experience and want to become members. That's proving to be a bit of a juggling act but I've got a pretty sound co-administrator and I think between the 2 of us we can get it done.

Hey kirki ... from my IM, you know that I feel that deleting the topics was a mistake (and not just because I posted em :P) But I just feel the need to expound.

You've mentioned the ESPN board and I haven't been back there for months because of this place that you've been so kind to create. That was quite a task because, despite the amorons and peachpits over there, I was fairly well hooked. That place was rabid, but you could still find intelligent convo once you learned which posters to skip. But then the format change happened, and those problems combined with having to search for good stuff ... I just decided not to bother with it any more.

It has been my pleasure to help you with this board kirk. But I don't see this place as some hiding spot where we all huddle round in some kind of love fest. I think deleting the topics was wrong because there was nothing to be censored. There is nothing wrong with heated debate. Just a "dash" of TOB (that other board) is good for any online community. I'd just hate to see people tip-toeing around here afraid to speak their mind because they're too afraid of ruffling feathers. I say that feathers NEED to be ruffled from time to time. There was a time a while back when I yelled at Bets and I was out of line. I'm sorry for that, but nobody called me on it and that was disappointing too.

Anyway, just my $ .02

Yeah... I totally overreacted. I guess because I was an aggressor in the debate I felt that I had brought the imagined negativity in. My apologies for jumping the gun and removing the topics. I'll try and be more thoughtful in the future.

You didn't get a free pass on that Seb. Â*You must be grading too many papers lately! Â*You get kudos for being nice about it now. Â*

Actually not grading enough lately ... hence my presence here an now. The problem is that I'm always thinking about the many things I should be doing. Though, no worries, a full weekend to busy myself procrastinating!

Thanks for the kudos ... I AM a nice guy! :D

I thought our debate was quite tame considering the subject matter. I mean, how can you truly be nice in such a debate ... it's POLITICS for crying out loud! The "other side" is just so ... so ... SO GOSH DARN WRONG! :P
