View Full Version : Modifications to Forum Rules and Chat

We've recently experienced discussions and incidents that have created an atmosphere of negativity and tension that go beyond what is desirable for our forum. In the hopes of reinforcing the spirit of civility and respect for one another that TAT was founded on, I'm reposting our forum rules. A few modifications have been made to them. The top "quoted" rules are old. The second "unquoted" rules contain the modifications in bold.

We're also making a change to how our chat room operates. Starting immediately, all chats will be automatically transcribed and the previous 48 hours will be written to a log file on our server. No one will have access to this log file except me and it WILL NOT be read by anyone, including me, unless it's necessary to arbitrate a disagreement or to verify a reported rule violation. Don't have an expectation of privacy while in the chat room, and remember that all forum rules apply in chat as well.

Private messaging in both the forum and chat room ARE NOT logged and therefore are not accessible to anyone, including myself. Private messaging is private.

These rules are in place to keep our boards organized and the discussions civil and respectful. We are NOT attempting to stifle "heated" debate. But we insist that when arguments arise, you argue about the post, not the poster. The moderating of our forum is a subjective process, but every effort is made to be fair, consistent and impartial.

1. Please make the subject of new threads brief and as descriptive to the content as possible.

2. Before creating a new thread, please take a quick look on the appropriate board and make sure a new thread for your subject of discussion is necessary. If your post will fit into an existing thread place it there rather than starting a new one.

3. Please post only the first several paragraphs of an article that is found elsewhere on the internet and include the author's name and a link to the complete article.

4. Please do not use overly negative and derogatory terms (scum, trash, idiot, etc.) when referring to players, commentators, broadcasters, celebrities, etc. For every player or celebrity that you despise, chances are another member will claim them as their favorite. Civility and respect towards other members and their opinions is paramount!

5. Please keep your signatures brief (no more than several lines) and small (not over size 2).

6. Please use English only in all posts.

The following will not be tolerated under any circumstances.

* Racism, homophobia, or attacks on any other TAT member for any reason.
* Name calling aimed at other TAT members (i.e., "Don't be such an idiot").
* Pornographic material, explicit sexual descriptions, graphic descriptions of violence, or links to such.
* Links to product or gambling sites except those that have a partnership with TAT.
* Harassment, baiting or stalking.
* Hijacking of threads for negative purposes. These rules are in place to keep our boards organized and the discussions civil and respectful. We are NOT attempting to stifle "heated" debate. Just for clarification, what does the following rule mean?

* Links to products, gambling sites, blogs, or other websites without prior approval.

Sometimes the only place some information can be found is on some player's blog, for example, or some particularly stalkerish :p fan's blog. Are links to such sites not allowed? Also, what are "other websites"?

rabbit, this relates more to advertising/promotion. Links to sources of information and such are fine.

Other "commercial" websites maybe? Yeah, the rest all sounds great, but this part confused me too.

We went through a phase where we were spammed by various websites, they posted multiple threads advertising their products, some of which were less than savoury, so that's mainly what this rule is referring to.

I changed the text of that section to read:

Even Brad Gilbert? ;) Surely this isn't someone out there that can stomach him right?

What about Justin and Alves?

You all are so totally missing the point. Justin's and Brad's DOGS doesn't even like them, so obviously, none of this applies to them. ;)

"For every player or celebrity that you despise, chances are another member will claim them as their favorite."

Yeah, I think there is an implied exception there for TA, BG and JG, as we all know they are nobody's favorite.

Do you mean can you link to one if you liked it?

Sure.

The problem we've had is that someone who owns or works for a website, blog, product website, gambling site, comes in here, registers and their first post is solely to promote their website, blog, product, etc. Sometimes, they put the link in their signature and/or bump up several different threads with no substantive comments except to promote that site.

That is what we are trying to avoid.

If you play tennis, and are using a new tennis racquet that is working great for you, and you link to it in a tennis instruction thread, that's fine. If you see something funny on Novak Djokovic's website, and you link to it, fine.

WELL, thank goodness that we all will still have an avenue to call you a slut. (Of course, I mean this privately, and in a positive fashion- i.e., I am privately positive that Kirkus is a slut.) :gorgeous:

You really have to love TAT. Kirkus posts new rules and in less than 30 posts, we already had a joke regarding (self censored) enhancement, the use of the words "water retaining sea cow" to describe a woman, and of course, the word slut found its way back to this thread.
I mean, talk about following rules, people! Hurray for all of us!!!!
(I won't even mention the extra long signature by you-know-who (dare I say you-know-hoe?))

I thought that too. Tracy Austin doesn't get that many commentating gigs, so I sorta forgot about her. And yes, MA is the umpire Mariana Alves.

The conversations in the chat room WILL NOT be logged.

I don't recall a single instance when it would have been helpful to go back and read a chat log. So why start logging them now? Why put that extra load on the server? Why discourage the conversation that might be perfectly acceptable, but of a personal nature? Although I never would have read the transcripts unless necessary, I don't even like having them available. And even though I don't think there should be an expectation of privacy in a public chat room, the idea of the logs goes against my own feelings about privacy.

Anyway, no changes are being made to how the chat room operates.
