Congratulations to out 60 players (out of an original 376) that have made it through the first 4 rounds of our 6th Annual Wimbledon Suicide Pool. Given that there is so much red in the original P&R, we're going to go ahead and give you an Updated thread for making your final three selections. Hopefully you have managed to save the correct combination of players that will enable you to beat the draw:

Now that we have gotten to the Updated Thread, I've locked our original P&R to prevent it from being bumped up, and possibly leading to confusion for our remaining players.

Whoo! Only the second time I made it to an "updated" thread! Last one was just the last french, where I immediately made the mistake of choosing "No Pick".

Fortunately, unlike last time there are no relatives visiting right now, so maybe I can do better. :p

We haven't added the Wednesday picks yet, Ashok - that will happen later tonight as I am on the road for work all day today. But I have Murray logged as your 1/4 final pick.

All 60 players get their selection in, so no losses to No Pick on Day 9.

Leading the selections today is Andy "Don't call me Anne" Murray, with 29 players. Second today is Novak "Medical Miracle" Djokovic, with 25. Third today is Rafa "can I borrow the trainer when you are done with him, Jelena?" Nadal, with 4. And last is Robin "to the batcave" Soderling, with 2.

As I said upthread, the formal list will not be updated til late tonight, as I am on the road for work all day. It will be finished well before Your next pick is due.

Unfortunately, I backed myself into a corner. I need Murray to win for my pick today and for Soderling to beat Rafa (yuck) for me to have any chance to get to the finals. This has been my best SP thus far though so hopefully I can build on it at the USO!

Although I presumed Roger would prevail, I was a little bit wary of that match-up. Not enough to pick Berdych, but enough not to doubt Roger and pick him this early.

I'm guessing we're mostly all screwed with that upset. It looks like everyone was saving Federer (and Nadal) for the final two picks.

I've already used both Berdych and Djokovic, so I can't beat the draw. I imagine there are a few who haven't been boxed in there, so the best I can do is tie for second.

I had waffled between Murray and Djokovic, and if Murray wins I'll be really wishing I picked him instead of Djokovic in the end. Then I could have done Djoko-Rafa and have a chance. As it is, I can only get as far as final via a Nadal-or-Murray pick. Still, not too bad.

I know... I'm wishing I did the same thing! :)

Problem is that I underestimated Nadal. If I had gone with Murray and Nadal didn't make it I would have been locked on that side. Oh well. Hindsight is 20/20. I still have to think that I made the most conservative choice I could.

What if, say, two or three people have a pick available for the final (but are wrong) while the rest of us (almost everybody's taken Djokovic) can't make a pick? Do the people who make a wrong pick in the finals get a medal over the no-picks? Or is it all about number of correct picks?

Having only Murray and Nadal left, need to wait and see what my best strategy is to get a medal, since I am still looking to beat the draw in one of these things...

If we make it to the final, without having a pick left, then do we get a bronze (assuming someone can and does win)?

Updated through the 1/4s. We lose two today with Soderling, and have 58 going into the semis. Many of them, however are boxed in, due to Roger's loss today, but there are a select few with at least one remaining player on each half of the draw.

No mens play tomorrow - we'll have our Day 11 Semifinal thread open early tomorrow afternoon (Eastern time).

Our semifinal count has us starting at 58, with 2 no picks taking us down to 56.

Leading in the count today is Rafa "Grass is for Spaniards" Nadal, with 32. Second is Tomas "did you really mean to save me for the semis?" Berdych, with 12. Third is Andy "the brother without a Slam" Murray, at 10. And bringing up the rear, Novak "hey, I am ranked ahead of Federer, but don't tell my mom" Djokovic with 2.

I'll try to fashion some finals scenarios in a bit.

James7

I don't believe so, James. Tiris, for one used Berdych today, and saved Murray. I'm thinking from a quick glance that a Djokovic/Murray final is the only one where no one would have a pick remaining.

We have at least one person with a pick remaining in each of the other scenarios (Berdych/Murray, Berdych/Nadal and Djokovic/Nadal).

With Tomas winning the first match, it looks like we will end up with either 2 or 6 medal winners. We have two people that will have a pick left if Andy wins, and 6 that will have a pick left if Rafa wins.

So from a start of 376, we will finish the game with either 2 or 6 winners. Once again, our SPs prove to be a tremendously difficult game to survive. And Wimbledon, we all believe, is the easiest of the 4 Slams, given that the draws come together for the R16, and you only have to make 10 choices (the other Slams are either 12 or 13).

56 - 2 (Djokovic) = 54

54 - 10 (Murray) = 44

44 - 38 (out of picks) = 6 who live to make a pick for Day 13/Men's final

That's part of what makes the game work though, Kmart. Either knowing who to save, or having made some tough choices that result in your lucking out and saving the right player. Like this time, so many used Berdych too early (he was a big Day 5 and Day 7 pick!), but enough people were smart enough to save him then.

But you are right...it does suck to get this far, and not have a final pick available. I think the collective blame for that can fall on Mr. Federer's shoulders.

Haha I know. It's Federer's sudden struggles that have doomed me in both. I took Soderling at the French in the 4th, and Berdych here in the 4th, assuming both would lose to Federer. In years past you wouldn't even think twice about him losing to either player.

First time getting to final..
Also first time running out of pack..
Well..I guess that is not bad...

That is the problem of SP.
I did think of saving Berdych, as I am secretly not very confident of Federer's ability to beat him, but there is almost no seemingly SAFE choice on that part of the draw for a couple of rounds..

Well, I know no one's paying any attention to posts made here anymore, but I was away and didnt get a chance, so I just wanted to chime in and thank all the organizers of this loathsome, noxious competition, and congratulate the winners.

This time I actually got to the final, but like so many others was undone by the hapless Fed....who woulda thunk it? I would have picked him for the semis, and then, despite being a huge fan - somewhat less so right now - was prepared to pick against him in the final; I had it all figured out, just like everybody else. Suffice it to say, he's off my Christmas card list! And I suppose Andy Murray will have to wait at least another year for that knighthood. British when he wins, Scottish when he loses.
