View Full Version : World Cup R-16 Predictions

Drop-shot
06-23-2010, 01:51 PM
THIS CONTEST IS CLOSED TO PARTICIPANTS WHO DID NOT PLAY THE QUALIES

As announced previously, we're opening this thread for predictions of the first four R-16 matches:

Saturday:
Uruguay vs South Korea
USA vs Ghana

Sunday:
Germany vs England
Argentina vs Mexico

Monday:
Netherlands vs Slovakia
Brazil vs Chile

Tuesday:
Paraguay vs Japan
Spain vs Portugal

EVERYONE SHOULD POST THESE PREDICTIONS BEFORE KICKOFF ON SATURDAY.

The scoring method will remain the same with penalty categories in case of a tie between two.

Tiebreaker questions:
1. How many red cards will there be in all of R-16?
2. How many penalties will there be in all of R-16?
(should the answer not be exact, the closest one will win)

Once the other qualifying teams are known you can post the remaining predictions here.
Those who wish to wait until Friday after the last matches of Group H and post all their predictions together can do so.

Example:

Uruguay 3-1 South Korea
USA 4-0 Ghana
Argentina 0-2 Mexico
England 0-0 Germany*

Penalty category (in case of a tie only)
1- 2 Red cards
2- 3 penalties

*in case of a tie: WC has two overtimes of 15' each. If the tie is not broken, the teams go to penalties (best of five and from there on 1 penalty kick each until there is a winner).

For this scenario predict as follows: England 0-0 Germany, England wins in penalty shootout
In other words, do not predict a tie without the penalty shootout outcome.
You get 3 points for the correct winner and 1 bonus point for the correct tied score in the regular 90' + the overtimes.

A win in overtime is no different from a win in the regular 90', so no need to clarify.

! Should one of the qualifying contestants fail to post predictions his place will be taken by the 3rd place in his/her group.

! We will post the head-to-heads as soon as we have the qualified contestants on Friday.

If you wish to change your predictions you can edit your original post. The same goes if you wish to add the new R-16 predictions.

Umm, what's a penalty? Is that a penalty kick? (Sorry, soccer fan for only month every four years.)

A couple more questions for further clarification:

1. Are you only asking about penalty kicks during the 90 (or 120) minutes, not those in a (tie-breaking) shootout?

2. You are asking for the number of kicks awarded, not the number of goals scored, right?

1. Yes, penalty kicks in regular time and overtime. NOT penalty shootouts.

2. Yes, the number of penalties made and given by the referee, whether the player converts or not is irrelevant.
