Well, we have quite a crowd this go-round, don't we?

Good luck to the 349 participants as you attempt to beat the draw. Keep track of your picks here so that you don't duplicate a pick and eliminate yourself and I'll be sure to supply some entertainment along the way.

And remember, once you're red, you're, well, how shall I put this nicely...

DAY 1 ANALYSIS AKA BEAU'S BREAKDOWN (Thanks, Danielle!)

Well, I must say that you all gave me quite a bit of work to put this together! Out of 64 women in this half of the draw, just over half (33) were picked by at least one person. I guess that means we're guaranteed to lose some today! But will it be you??

What's that sound? It sounds like singing... yes, it's the

BotD (Bandwagon of the Day)!

Zac Efron!

Miss Kristen Flipkens (64) - I guess she's been doing pretty well the last couple of weeks, which would explain the extraordinary numbers behind this somewhat random choice. But then, maybe I'm biased because every time I've seen her play, I wondered how on Earth she wins matches at all. Nice draw in a Canadian lucky loser, but I'd still have stayed far far away. Far far. Keep going...

The second largest bandwagon is:

Miss Alisa Kleybanova (49) - Ruined a lot of people's lives here last year. Again she comes in favored, though who knows how she'll end up faring against Zahlavova the lesser.

Coming in third:

Miss Alona Bondarenko (40) - Every year we admonish the same thing: don't pick the Bondarenkos. And yet every Grand Slam, a bunch of people do so, at their own peril. Yes, sometimes they advance, but it's never without stress. Good luck to you all, you're going to need it.

And the rest:

Miss Vera Zvonareva (21) - Certainly doesn't have a terrible draw... how she does against Llagostera Vives in round one will likely be a portent of the rest of her tournament.

Miss Nadia Petrova (20) - She's in a crap section, but she's got the game. Is this too soon to choose her?

Miss Maria Kirilenko (17) - Shhhh.

Miss Ekaterina Makarova (17) - In theory, an excellent pick. But how soon we forget Rybarikova and Tanasugarn from last year. Both won warmup tournaments and had good first round draws. Together, they knocked out about a billion SP'ers. And Makarova's draw isn't even that great!

Miss Kateryna Bondarenko (15) - I know in the past I've been reluctant to even admit the existence of this other Bondarenko sister, but even I admit that she should be able to beat Jill Craybas's grandmother.

Miss Aleksandra Wozniak (14) - Will have a tough fight against former top 15-er Daniilidou.

Miss Patty Schnyder (13) - Frankly, I'm shocked. Patty is soooo bad on the grass! Doesn't she have a losing record lifetime at Wimbledon?

Miss Elena Baltacha (11) - A personal favorite. Had unarguably her best year last year and comes into this slam with a bit of expectation from the partial crowds. And frankly, I like her against Martic. (Side note: I got to see both of these girls at Indian Wells this year! (And Martic was all over the place.))

Miss Regina Kulikova (7) - Drew “F*** it” in the first round, who by the way, knocked out about a billion people by beating Schiavone a few years back, remember? She only ever seems to show up as a Wimbledon wildcard, too.

Mrs Jarmila Groth (6) - A nice pick. Should be able to boom her way into round 2.

Mrs Bethanie Mattek-Sands (6) - Did a nice job qualifying, but it doesn't get easier now against Sprem.

Miss Alicia Molik (6) - A very nice story. Good luck!

Miss Melanie Oudin (6) - She won't defend her fourth round points, but the US Fed Cup team should probably win this one.

Miss Yanina Wickmayer (6) - She just lost two weeks ago to the woman she drew first round: wild card Alison Riske. This means the American will be full of confidence. Can Yani reverse the trend?

Miss Kristina Barrois (5) - Had a good showing at one of the leadup tournaments and is somewhat of a favorite against Koryttseva. If her beautiful slice is on, she'll be through easily.

Miss Sania Mirza (3) - I dunno. I guess I'm shocked she's ranked high enough to have gotten direct entry. Especially since I think she's won about two matches this year. Kerber in 2.

Miss Tsvetana Pironkova (3) - The feisty one has drawn someone I know absolutely nothing about. So... yeah...

Miss Yaroslava Shvedova (3) - The Kazakhstani *snicker* begins her quest to prove her Roland Garros QF run was a harbinger, not a fluke. Unfortunately for her, she drew a tall talented Hercog in the first round. Do I hear a faint *crash*?

Miss Marion Bartoli (2) - Has a great draw at the Slam where she's had her best result. Could go deep. Is it too early?

Miss Andrea Hlavackova (2) - What a great pick. Can't go wrong! A qualifier over a wildcard? Done and done. Sorry Lertcheewakarnites!

Miss Alla Kudryavtseva (2) - Contrarian to the one Arvidsson. You have to be ballsy to pick from this match.

Miss Shenay Perry (2) - Did a great job to qualify and drew fellow qualifier Yakimova. I do hope Shenay wins!

Miss Agnes Szavay (2) - Yeah, I think she'll topple the Makarovas.

And the cheese stands alone:

Miss Sofia Arvidsson - One “brave” soul took the former top-30 Swede over the Maria-slayer of two years ago. Well, it was a good run, soldier.

Miss Kim Clijsters - Well, it'll get you into day two. Next!

Miss Eleni Daniilidou - Won her third qualifying match love and love and is contrarian to the Wozniaks. Psst... I think you're through!

Miss Angelique Kerber - Often gets out of the first round of slams and has several times the number of wins as her opponent this season.

Miss Noppawan Lertcheewakarn - She of the dynamite name has the luck of being contrary to my own pick. This probably bodes well for her.

Miss Karolina Sprem - Even money match against Sister B.

Miss Anastasiya Yakimova - The Yak drew Perry. We'll see. We'll see.

Good luck everyone (and remember that I'm right about 25% of the time, so if I've told you you'll lose, you might be in good shape)!

Funny how no one ever takes "No pick" on day one despite her being extremely popular for the next few days ;)

I know picking Alona may be stressful...but my sp's have been so bad this year I no longer get worked up by them (at least not yet - maybe if I make it past day 3 for a change)

DAY 1 ANALYSIS AKA BEAU'S BREAKDOWN (Thanks, Danielle!)

:cheesy: Always love these, beau!

And you were right about Patty. Don't know what I was thinking. And she wasn't even my first choice. I considered two others (who, naturally, both went on to win) before rushing and throwing her name in the ring. Silly me.

You know....I wish I could say sorry to the people who picked K. Bondarenko as their first pick, buuuut multiple warnings have been issued! You just don't pick a Bondarenko sister unless you love suffering through multiple cardiac arrests. A. Bondarenko almost made it a double heart attack.

But then again, I guess being Bondarenko'ed is a rite of passage in TAT pools. It just happens to be a rite some people go through more than once. :P

I once picked a Bondarenko to a win, got cocky, and picked another Bondarenko. Obviously, I got renko'd hard. The scary part of this cautionary tale is that I did think last year, on my 34738372th SP run. I guess masochism is my choice of entertainment.

We started the pool with 349 and lost the following:

K-Bond (15)
Schnyder (13)
Baltacha (11)
Mattek-Sands (6)
Mirza (3)
Szavay (2)
Arvidsson (1)
Daniilidou (1)
Lertcheewakarn (1)
Yakimova (1)

Leaving us with 295, 84.5% of the pool.

Another update will come in the morning, complete with analyses!

Day 2 Beau's Breakdown

Only about 15% of the total pool lost on day 1, which seems like a lot, but we've had MUCH worse days before. Will this be one of them?

Today's BotD is...

Miss Daniela Hantuchova (55) - Vania King has had some good results this year. But so has Daniela. A pretty solid pick, I think.

Earning the second-highest number of picks:

Miss Jie Zheng (37) - A former semifinalist here (as well as the Aussie this year) who could just as easily lose this match as make the semis in this somewhat weaker quarter.

And show:

Miss Gisela Dulko (34) - Legs is gonna have to use hers if she wants to get by the tricky and plucky Romanian, who was picked by one.

All the rest:

Miss Andrea Petkovic (21) - A personal favorite of mine, so of course I doomed her by picking her. On the flipside, I made it to day 2 of both pools, so maybe this whole tournament will be an outlier for me!

Miss Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (18) - Miss Anasazi Patio Furniture is often a solid first round pick, though I seem to recall her sending out a bunch of people here last year against Vinci. Hmm...

Miss No Pick (16) - Often a great option while trying to navigate through these draws, and I see this tournament is no different.

Miss Tamarine Tanasugarn (13) - Tammy T took out about 47000 SPers last year in her ridiculous loss to grass court specialist Parra Santonja (ask patrick, he'll give you all the details) so it seems we're a little more gunshy this go-round. Good thinking. Seriously – even money against Morita.

Miss Svetlana Kuznetsova (10) - It's so weird to see that she's the 19th seed. She'll have no problem felling The Akgul.

Miss Na Li (8) - Has a grass court leadup title in her pocket and not the worst draw; this could be too early, but she'll for sure get by surprise Roland Garros 4th rounder Scheepers.

Miss Aravane Rezai (8) - Boy those shots go fast! Yeah, she'll beat Rybarikova, who had the audacity to get killed last year here after winning a warmup tournament and begging me to pick her on day 1. Crapface.

Miss Sara Errani (7) - Has a couple of wins on grass this season. Will be interesting to see if she can hold her seeding against a player who's shown up for big Grand Slam matches in the past. (Okay, one big upset.)

Miss Agnieszka Radwanska (7) - Cupcake section of the draw, at least to the third round.

Miss Timea Bacsinszky (6) - Um, sure.

Miss Anastasia Rodionova (6) - Another pick against fair Brittania! Keothavong might get this one.

Miss Alexandra Dulgheru (5) - Isn't clay more her surface? I guess we'll see.

Miss Anna Chakvetadze (4) - Has not done much the last couple of years and faces someone who has found success very recently in the German Petkovic. Sorry, Anna.

Miss Sorana Cirstea (4) - Even money against the big-hitting lefty... who I almost picked for the third time in a suicide pool, before remembering that it only worked once.

Miss Casey Dellacqua (4) - I do like her, but worry about her chances against the Serb, who was picked by one.

Miss Olga Govortsova (4) - Has drawn the Tammy T of Two Thousand Nine Slayer. Govortsova in 2. Gotta be, right?

Miss Romina Oprandi (3) - Yikes stripes! A pick against the crown! (That's gone well so far, however.)

Miss Flavia Pennetta (3) - Frankly, I have no idea how this one will go. I know one thing, however: it will go well for Pennetta if any TaTeurs are watching/walking by because her opponent is a certain jockstrap-headband wearing Spaniard. Yup, her.

Miss Maria Sharapova (3) - I can ONLY assume that we expect her to lose to Serena in round 4. And since I see that happening as well, I like Pova's chances against the lucky loser who won exactly ZERO games against Eleni Daniilidou in the last round of qualifying.

Miss Caroline Wozniacki (3) - She'll beat wait for it, wait for it... Garbin, and this draw gives her ample opportunity to reach the semis.

Miss Victoria Azarenka (2) - Plays Lucic (!!!!) in the first round. Welcome back, Mirjana, here's what the game looks like now.

Miss Alize Cornet (2) - I think she's still reeling from that just-wide forehand. Against Safina. At the Australian Open. Last year.

Mrs Kimiko Date Krumm (2) - Her granddaughter Greta Arn won through yesterday, so who's to say she can't pull the upset, too?

Miss Kurumi Nara (2) - Almost knocked Wickmayer out in the first round of the AO qualies earlier this year, which is the last I heard of her. Her opponent Duque Marino doesn't exactly strike fear into hearts, either, though.

Miss Lucie Safarova (2) - I still remember her awesome match here against Jankovic a few years back and always hope for her to do well. Plus, as long as she can get to almost match point, her opponent might just give it to her, anyway.

The cheese stands alone:

Miss Bojana Jovanovski - See Dellacqua, Miss Casey.

Miss Monica Niculescu - See Dulko, Miss Gisela. Also: Go Monica!

Miss Arantxa Rus - NFI.

Miss Serena Williams - I can ONLY assume that this person is convinced she will lose to Sharapova in the round of 16. I am less convinced and think this is a touch too early. Scratch that. A major shove too early...

Miss Heather Watson - Could possibly beat Oprandi, really.

Miss Klara Zakopalova - I liked her better when she was Klara Koukalova because not only was it alliterative and consonant, but it made me sing the song “Koukalova sits in the old gum tree...” in my head every time. Just for that, Miss Koukalova, you deserve to lose. Take away my enjoyment, will you...

So we start the day with 279. Best of luck!

"Tammy T took out about 47000 SPers last year in her ridiculous loss to grass court specialist Parra Santonja (ask patrick, he'll give you all the details) "

Tanasugarn had a total of ZERO break points against Parra Santonja, who best surface is clay. Matter of fact, Parra Santonja had a decent season on clay. Back to Tanasugarn, if she manages to have some break points and convert, she will have a better chance of advancing to round 2.

Cirstea (4)
Dellacqua (4)
Govortsova (4)

Day 3 Beau's Breakdown

Hello again!

Things went rather terribly yesterday, didn't they? Well, today I don't see much of the same. There's a good chance that everyone who made a valid pick today will see day 4. Who are the candidates? Let's find out.

BotD:

Miss Nadia Petrova (46) - Easy peasy, but these SP'ers will be hoping she won't be the big hitter who gets out of this quarter.

2nd:

Miss Vera Zvonareva (29) - Certainly a favorite, and since she's in the same section as Clijsters, Henin, Petrova, and Jankovic, she's probably not going to be a quarterfinalist.

3rd:

Miss Maria Kirilenko (26) - Go Shenay! (Not that I dislike Makiri, and I do think she's going to win.)

4th:

Miss Shahar Peer (25) - Can't wait for the inevitable fourth round match against Venus.

And the rest:

Mrs No Pick (12) - She's sooo popular.

Miss Yaroslava Shvedova (11) - Had a nice first round win over a potentially tricky opponent and is now not only the favorite for this match, but perhaps this eighth, as well.

Miss Alisa Kleybanova (10) - Through in 2. Then she'll be out in 2 in the third round.

Miss Alona Bondarenko (6) - Well, she makes sure that you suffer while waiting for her to finish, win or lose. 6-4 in the third against Katie O'Brien, really? In any case, we'll see how much resistance Varvara Lepchenko offers.

Miss Alicia Molik (5) - Trying to make a nice comeback and it certainly doesn't hurt that she's drawn Jill Craybas's mom.

Miss Melanie Oudin (5) - She has a good chance to win this one, but you can't underestimate Groth's power.

Miss Yanina Wickmayer (5) - Had a really close match against Riske and has Flipkens who's somehow won several matches recently. Could be tricky.

Miss Vera Dushevina (2) - A gutsy pick, though I'm less positive about her chances against Pironkova than I was about her chances against Schiavone.

And the lonelies:

Miss Justine Henin - At least one person feels that her dream will go unfulfilled...

Miss Jelena Jankovic - Will beat Wozniak and likely make the quarters from this section.

Best of luck today everyone! (And you Hantuchova carryovers from yesterday need it!)

Yeah, I kind of remembered at about 9:00 last night that I had a meeting this morning and thought that if I wanted to get it up at all, it had to be done right away.

Of course, I'm at the "meeting" right now waiting for both of the other attendees to show up. I've been here about 20 minutes. I thought maybe I had the wrong day, but I'm on the schedule. So, I guess I'm here!

Congratulations! She must've just gotten married since she was Miss No Pick the last day! (OR is this her sister?)

Well, since she is so very popular, she has many suitors. She just got engaged to Mr. Invalid Pick and she likes the sound of her married name so much, she's using it already. How lucky they had the same surnames!

Also, nice catch!

Day 4 Beau's Breakdown

Hello all, and welcome to another day at The Championships! I must say that it's about time we've given up the hope for perennial choice Miss (yes, the engagement's off) No Pick to come through. (Or, perhaps, she always comes through. Hmm...)

Where are those perfect attendance gold stars when you need them??

On to the results!

Today's BotD is:

Miss Dominika Cibulkova (27) - A great choice. Morita who? Pat Morita?

Coming in 2nd:

Miss Flavia Pennetta (19) - Danger, danger!

And C:

Miss Daniela Hantuchova (16) - I'm surprised anyone has her left as an option! Just barely escaped from her last match, but draws an opponent she should have an easier time against. (Theoretically.)

All the rest:

Miss Maria Sharapova (14) - I still think this is a good choice because I still feel she's like to go out to Serena.

Miss Na Li (13) - She's going to be the last one standing in this quarter, so might this be too soon?

Miss Victoria Azarenka (8) - Hoooo! *pause* Hoooo!

Miss Agnieszka Radwanska (8) - No problems with Brianti, and I like her to win the one after.

Miss Alexandra Dulgheru (6) - Um, sure. Also, this eighth is really up for grabs.

Miss Svetlana Kuznetsova (4) - I think this is a great pick, as she should win and will probably lose to Na Li.

Miss Kaia Kanepi (2) - A solid pick for this round, but I like her to win at least one after this.

Miss Aravane Rezai (2) - Just barely got out of round one but has an easier opponent this time around.

Miss Jie Zheng (2) - When she makes it to her third Grand Slam semifinal, you'll be sorry.

Lots of people through already. Pennetta (19), Sharapova (14), Azarenka (8), Radwanska (8), Dulgheru (6), and Kanepi (2) have won. Zheng's out.

Day 5 Beau's Breakdown

Despite her waning popularity, Miss No Pick did manage to claim another victim, so we start the day with 98. From this point on, the breakdown will be in match form. Different format, same jinxing power and lack of correctness.

Here goes:

Miss Kim Clijsters (6) vs. Miss Maria Kirilenko (1)

All of you who picked Clijsters, you're going to be sorry. Not now, but when she gets to the semifinals. Away with you! (And to the Kirilenko picker... we can't be friends.)

Miss Justine Henin (4) vs. Miss Nadia Petrova (0)

Boy, I have no idea. I'll say Justine's going to win this one, but do any of us really know which Nadia's going to show up today?

Miss Yanina Wickmayer (2) vs. Miss Vera Zvonareva (2)

I'd like to think Bepa has the edge here, given the fact that she's rolled through her matches. But does that mean that Yani is more match-tough because she's fought tougher opponents?

Miss Alona Bondarenko (0) vs. Miss Jelena Jankovic (22)

All of you who managed to survive having picked A-Bond prior to today will reap the benefits of her disposal from the draw.

Miss Tsvetana Pironkova (0) vs. Miss Regina Kulikova (1)

I give the feisty Pironkova the edge here.

Miss Greta Arn (0) vs. Miss Marion Bartoli (53)

Greta Arn apparently plays for Hungary now... I wonder if that has anything to do with her sudden “re-emergence”. This 3rd round showing, by the way, is her career best at a Grand Slam. A well-rested Bartoli in 2.

Miss Angelique Kerber (5) vs. Mrs Jarmila Groth (2)

Both players have really earned their spots in the 3rd round, but it will be Groth who makes her second consecutive Grand Slam fourth round.

Miss Alisa Kleybanova (0) vs. Miss Venus Williams (0)

Venus.

Good luck all and may your fortunes be bright.

Charlie02123
06-25-2010, 06:45 AM
Bartoli, Jankovic, Henin, and Clijsters are all already through. Looks like we'll only lose a few people from the Wickmayer/Zvonareva and Kerber/Groth daredevils. The TAT-ers who come out of those picks will probably be in the best positions moving forward.

Day 6 Beau's Breakdown

We've started the day with 89, and with no matches having picks on both sides of them, it's possible and probable that we lose even fewer than the 10 casualties of yesterday.

And it also seems as though after being shunned on Day 4, Miss No Pick is determined more than ever to get people on her side. Three more have gone this controversial way today.

Today's matchups are:

Miss Serena Williams (0) vs. Miss Dominika Cibulkova (0)

Serena.

Mrs Barbora Zahlavova Strycova (0) vs. Miss Maria Sharapova (38)

This is a pretty foregone conclusion and would be my choice for the day. An easy win and then she runs into the best player in the world.

Miss Na Li (6) vs. Miss Anastasia Rodionova (0)

I don't know that anyone actually knows WHY Sveta wouldn't shake Rodionova's hand, but if Sveta doesn't like her, then I'm gonna find it hard to. The Chinese #1 in 2.

Miss Sara Errani (0) vs. Miss Agnieszka Radwanska (20)

Radwanska's a better player and Errani won't be able to hurt her off the ground.

Miss Caroline Wozniacki (2) vs. Miss Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (0)

Pavly's maintained her seed, now it's time for her to leave.

Miss Petra Kvitova (0) vs. Miss Victoria Azarenka (12)

Kvitova's got some talent, but Vika's my (albeit revised) pick to make it out of this quarter.

Miss Flavia Pennetta (8) vs. Mrs Klara Zakopalova (0)

Pennetta comes in the heavy favorite in this one, and Zakopalova is one of those players I just can't see upsetting the bigger names when they're playing well, as Flavia is.

Miss Alexandra Dulgheru (0) vs. Miss Kaia Kanepi (0)

Both have been impressive in their matches so far (Kanepi hasn't dropped a set in five matches) and though Dulgheru is the seed, I give former Grand Slam quaterfinalist Kanepi the edge. Her power will serve her well today on the lawns.

Best of luck everyone!

Day 7 Beau's Breakdown

It's the best day of tennis all year, with all 16 men's and women's round of 16 matches to be played today. And we already have a winner! Miss No Pick has advanced the one person who picked her. Well done!

Here are today's matchups:

Miss Serena Williams (0) vs. Miss Maria Sharapova (0)

Serena.

Miss Na Li (7) vs. Miss Agnieszka Radwanska (2)

I feel like this is Li's to win (or lose). Radwanska certainly won't make many errors, and we all know how prone Li is to fits of them. If she can keep the UE count down, she'll win. She's my pick to lose to Serena in the QF.

Miss Caroline Wozniacki (11) vs. Miss Petra Kvitova

Caroline should win this one, though Kvitova has a big game; we'll see if it stays solid. The only downside with choosing Wozniacki might be her very likely semifinal birth and running out of picks.

Mrs Klara Zakopalova vs. Miss Kaia Kanepi (11)

Good for the Estonian! Here's hoping she makes her second Grand Slam QF today. (She should.)

Miss Kim Clijsters (0) vs. Miss Justine Henin (0)

Why did no one pick from this match? LOL.

Miss Vera Zvonareva (1) vs. Miss Jelena Jankovic (10)

This could be a tough match for Jelena. Vera's been playing very solidly this tournament (yay!) and could trouble the #4 seed.

Miss Tsvetana Pironkova (0) vs. Miss Marion Bartoli (23)

Fighting for the honor of being smacked by Venus in the quarters. I didn't realize anyone actually had Bartoli left after the last round, so color me shocked. Both players have been very solid this tournament and though the Maid comes in the heavy favorite, there's no doubt that Pironkova will not come out intimidated at all. Could be a fun one.

Mrs Jarmila Groth (0) vs. Miss Venus Williams (0)

Venus.

Good luck all!

Lesson number two is "always pick against an unknown". And once you can figure out how the two reconcile, then you will win the SP.

James7
06-28-2010, 03:10 PM
Alright, I ran my little experiment:

500 "virtual" players all made women's suicide pool picks completely at random until eliminated with the only logic being no double picks.

I lost 256 on day one picks. 112 on day two. 70 to day three. 34 on day four. 16 to day five. 3 to day six. and 6 to today.

I have 3 players left. Only the middle one looks in pretty excellent shape, First would be better if they hadn't blown Serena, but here are their picks in round order:

BARROIS, Kristina GER
WILLIAMS, Serena USA [1]
ARN, Greta HUN (Q)
ZAHLAVOVA STRYCOVA, Barbora CZE
BARTOLI, Marion FRA [11]
RADWANSKA, Agnieszka POL [7]
LI, Na CHN [9]

CHAN, Yung-Jan TPE
ERRANI, Sara ITA [32]
KERBER, Angelique GER
LI, Na CHN [9]
JANKOVIC, Jelena SRB [4]
ZAKOPALOVA, Klara CZE
PIRONKOVA, Tsvetana BUL

KULIKOVA, Regina RUS
AZARENKA, Victoria BLR [14]
GROTH, Jarmila AUS
RODIONOVA, Anastasia AUS
CLIJSTERS, Kim BEL [8]
WILLIAMS, Serena USA [1]
WILLIAMS, Venus USA [2]

I was just curious about how far no logic at all would get you and how that compares to TAT results. The random nature didn't lend itself particularly to bandwagons, but there were some interesting/funny mini-ones (Rezai on day 4 had a randomly high 8 picks whereas Sveta and Hantuchova had only one each, or the eleven "players" who picked against Venus in her first match).

I also wonder about how random pick players would do if I, for example, biased it to not pick in high seed matches in round one for example.

Yeah, I know... but I thought it was an interesting little experiment to run.:cheesy:
