After the Derby, I'm in the lead? I have $45000 to spend on the Preakness and Belmont. Super Saver paid out 15-1, and I put the most money ($3000) on him.

Patrick, who put $2500 on Super Saver and left $2500 aside, is in 2nd with $40000.

Congrats as well to Dryrunguy, Miles, and Waylandboy-tw, who each put money on all three horses which paid out (Super Saver, Ice Box, and Paddy O'Prado). They're all over $25000, as is Omegadoom.

Sorry to JTContinental, who is out after putting it all on the favorite, Lookin at Lucky.

See you all in two weeks at Pimlico!

I think my total should actually be $14,500?

I don't think so. You put $1000 on Ice Box, $1000 on Conveyance, and $500 on Homeboykris. That leaves you with $7500 remaining. Then you got $5000 back for Ice Box coming in second, which brings you to $12500.

Maybe we're both wrong? Shouldn't I get 6,000 for winning a $1000 bet that pays 5-1?

I don't know, I didn't do any of the payouts that way.

As long as you're consistent, that's what matters. But usually a 5-1 bet pays back 6x what you bet. It might become an issue if we get a heavy favorite who is under 1-1.

Or, put an easier way, don't subtract winning bets.

At the onset of this contest, we will give each participant $10,000 to spend as he or she sees fit. Bets will be placed by players before each of the three triple crown races, as soon as odds are posted. You may bet as little or as much of your money as you wish on each race, betting on as many or as few horses as you like.

Ok, the rules of this contest totally confused me. The above language led me to believe we only had 10K to bet on all three races. I had no idea we could rollover the winnings from one race to bet on the next race.

After the Derby, I'm in the lead? I have $45000 to spend on the Preakness and Belmont.

You get $10K to start with at the Derby. You can bet it all or part of it. It depends on your personal strategy. But that's the way this contest has always been done. In any case, we'll take a look at the language in preparation for next year's contest. If it's at all confusing, then we need to look into it.

::

As for the other issue (if a winning horse went off at below 1-1 odds at the morning line), stay tuned. We're looking into it. I don't see that happening at the Preakness. But if Super Saver wins the Preakness, I can definitely see him going off at 4-5 or even 1-2 in the morning line at Belmont. There's a whole lotta Calvin Borel worship going on... And with very good reason!

I don't know if the payoffs here should relate to how real payoffs work...since we'd be cleaning up :)

I'm fine with the way it works here now. It's consistent and easy to understand if not 100% the same as the real world.

Well, I think we're going to keep the scoring the way it is now at least for the rest of this contest. Next year it may be changed.

The Preakness was dominated by Patrick, who put $15,000 on Lookin at Lucky. He now stands in 1st with $55,000.

Although I lost money in this race, I'm still in 2nd with $33,000, though I only lead Miles, who benefited from betting $10,000 on Lookin at Lucky, by $3000.

Dryrunguy tried an interesting strategy and bet money on every horse. Through all of it, he came out a whopping $750 richer than before the race. He stands in 4th behind Miles by only $500.

TennisAnyone74 was the only contestant who didn't bet on every horse to put money on First Dude. First Dude was the 2nd place finisher in the race and gave the highest payout at 10-1. She doubled her money leftover after the Derby.

See you all in 3 weeks in New York City!

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I've won the contest. I went with a combination of horses at the last moment and came up with the winner (Drosselmeyer) and the second place finisher (Fly Down). I finished with $72750.

Patrick sat out the Belmont Stakes when he was in the lead with $55000. He came in second.

Waylandboy-tw put all of his money on Fly Down and that paid off. He finished in thirdwith $54000, but if he had $25000 like he thought he would've been in second. :p

Congrats to winston, who put all of her money on the winner, Drosselmeyer. She may not have finished high, but she still made a good pick.

Went to birthday party and completely forgot the Belmont.

Congrats, Tog.

For the record, I probably would have not even though about Fly Down

congrats all...right strategy for me...guessed wrong horses though. In reality I was pulling for First Dude. My two year old went with the "green one" again (Fly Down) and won our in house competiton.

Well done, Tog! You hit the nail on the head!

Can't believe Ice Box didn't materialize on Saturday! I thought he was a sure bet based on his horrible trip at the Derby, yet he still made a brilliant late run.
