My fellow equestrians,

You are cordially invited to participate in the 2010 edition of TAT's Smarty Jones Stakes!

At the onset of this contest, we will give each participant $10,000 to spend as he or she sees fit. Bets will be placed by players before each of the three triple crown races, as soon as odds are posted. You may bet as little or as much of your money as you wish on each race, betting on as many or as few horses as you like.

A horse selected that wins will pay out in full. A horse that comes in second will pay out half, and a horse that comes in third will pay out a quarter. There will be no exactas or trifectas or any of that silliness.

We look forward to seeing all of you on the tracks, as this contest trots along.

Stay tuned for the specific details, but picks will be due before the start of the race on Saturday, May 1.

If you would like to start scouting your selections, feel free to visit http://www.kentuckyderby.com/

I'd like to suggest everyone spend all their money on the betting favorite...usually works well in Kentucky!

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — It's looking like a soggy Kentucky Derby.
Heavy rains doused Churchill Downs early Saturday morning and turned the dirt into a muddy soup. Well over an inch fell by 12 p.m. EDT and the National Weather Service says there's a 70 percent chance of storms when the Run for the Roses goes off at 6:28 EDT.

I'm really happy for Paddy O'Prado. I watched a few of his recent races online and he seemed to fade late in the race. I didn't think he'd be able to handle this distance, even if he loves running in slop.

Ice Box is going to LOVE the distance at Belmont. But since there will probably be only 5 horses in the field, he better hope that Lookin at Lucky isn't one of them.

On there way to the track, the gray thoroughbreds were just beautiful, weren't they? I was like, "Ooohhh pretty". Then, like you said, after the race they were all mud-brown in color. LOL. Couldn't tell any of them apart.

Yup. Bay, brown, black... By the end, they were all just mud. It wasn't until 5 minutes after the race when they showed the unofficial top three that I realized Paddy O'Prado had finished third, and I had spent the last half of the race rooting for the wrong horse. LOL!

::

I've always been fascinated with the grays... It started back when Gato del Sol unexpectedly won the Derby back in the late 70s or early 80s. Holy Bull, though, was the most striking gray I've ever seen. He was a very light grey in his racing days and had the most beautiful, devilish eyes.

It's a good thing I didn't know Conveyance was a dark gray, or I probably would have put money on him, too... Just out of loyalty, even though speed horses and Derby races are usually a bad, bad mix.

This IS next week right?

Only 4 horses from the Derby?

Five (Super Saver, Paddy, Dublin, Lookin at Lucky, and Jackson Bend). But still...

And yes, it'll be next weekend.

I guess the distance is too short for Ice Box. Not enough room to close. He's gotta show up at Belmont. That distance should be a dandy for him. As should Make Music for Me.

I'm still trying to figure out what happened to Awesome Act. He never fired last Saturday. Had to be the conditions?

Thirteen horses is still plenty of horses to cause problems for Lookin at Lucky. Poor thing can't get a break.

I thought maybe the pack caught him off guard and didn't start as strong he thought they would. He was fine running in 2nd until he was passed on the outside by those other two. Then he got jammed up.

What was up with Dublin running way wide out of the gate?

I couldn't figure out who was going to be the speed in the race. There were no true speed horses in the field. What's funny about that potential scenario is that, when there is no clear speed, a horse can easily go wire to wire, or shadow and then close at the end. Zillions of Preaknesses have been won that way. Which is what I thought Super Saver was up to. But the pace was still awfully fast for there being no speed in the race.

I think Calvin actually lost his way a bit... He didn't think the pace was that fast, and that he'd have more horse left to use.

Still, I didn't think Super Saver looked great in the parade. But I wasn't about to change my bet. LOL! I've played too many suicide pools. LOL!

::

Dublin is not a disciplined horse. Most of them aren't, at least to some degree. But he is exceptionally undisciplined.

Now watch him win Belmont. LOL!

I had a feeling about First Dude and Tawanna Twist. Should have put more on First Dude. But I was scared of the Tim Palin connection. LOL!

Not surprised about Super Saver after the last race.

Going to be a real downer this year then. Last year we had no horse triple crown chance, but at least we had Calvin going for a jockey triple. Without the winners...this contest may be the main reason for me to watch the race!

Also, the girls love watching the race...2 year in particular loves predicting who'll win. This time she was excited about the "green one" (Yawanna Twist - 4th.) After the race she was saying all four of our picks won. :)

I wanted the horsey with the worst odds. But does it really matter? LOL.

Tell me they didn't just cut off that terrible little singer girl and go to commercial.

Yahoo!!! First time I ever had a (virtual) bet on a winner. Even if I only had $500, a win's a win. I picked Drosselmeyer because I like the Nutcracker. And I didn't know until the broadcast that my favorite jockey, Mike Smith, was riding him. Needless to say, I was standing in my living room yelling him home. What fun.:)

And it's Drosselmeyer! Fly Down comes in second and First Dude in 3rd.

I like it when a long-shot wins. :overhead_clap:

I can tell you they didn't...but it'd be a lie! Song didn't seem to fit for me. Just because it has the words "New York" in it, doesn't mean it's appropraite. Then again I hate "New York, New York" so I was just as happy not hearing that.

Yeah. I'm totally not sure what the hell was all about. LOL.

I hope her family wasn't recording her performance at home for her to watch later. :lipsrsealed:
