(NOTE: VERY EARLY START for this event)

Your Day 16, and final event is : Cross Country Men's 50 km, Mass Start Classic
Your Day 16 Pick is due: Feb. 28, 9:30 AM PST, 12:30 pm US Eastern Time

About the event:

The Men's Mass Start event is a tortuous event that is 50 kilometers long and is the ultimate test of endurance and strength. It has been held at every Winter Olympic Games since the 1924 Olympics in Chamonix, France. Skiers use the classic technique for this race which typically favors the seasoned veterans in that style because they have been there before and know what to expect.

Skiers start simultaneously which differs from the individual start events and align themselves in rows. The skiers ski around a shorter track to enable them to pass through the stadium every 10-15 minutes This allows the skiers to draw off of the crowd's energy when coming down to the final laps. Typically, numerous skiers fight to cross the finish line first to obtain the gold, and the event often requires a photo finish to determine the victor.

Among the participants:

Lukas Bauer CZE
Odd-Bjoern Hjelmeset NOR
Sami Jauhojarvi FIN

I have a question: since they have a mass start, how do they determine who starts in the front rows? (I'm assuming this gives you some advantage, am I wrong?)

By world cup rankings, but it's not much of an advantage in a distance this long.

Just read that in 2006 the top 8 were 3.3 seconds apart...amazing for such a long distance for it to be that close! I can still get the bronze bonus, so hoping for that.

Well, never mind then. I lost touch with the Olympics after the first week; the winter games don't grab the way the summer ones do.

What an Olympics for Northug...I figured no way he could win the long distance too...but sure enough!
