Note: Early start for Friday's event. There are two preliminary heats before the scheduled start of the event for qualification, but we will leave the thread open until the 1/8s begin at 12:15 Pacific time)

Your Day 14 Event is Ladies Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom
Your Day 14 Pick is due: Feb. 26, 12:15 PM PST, 3:15 US Eastern Time

About the event: The Ladies Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom is one of six snowboarding events that will be held at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics.

The snowboard slalom differs from the more familiar ski slalom in a few key ways. The gates in the snowboard slalom are triangular shaped, allowing the snowboarder to lean over the gate without having to hit it as skiers frequently do. The parallel giant slalom also differs from the ski slalom in that two competitorís race simultaneously. In each round, racers compete twice. If one snowboarder wins both, they move on to the next round, otherwise, the racer with the lowest cumulative time moves on.

Among the competitors:

Doris Guenther AUT
Amelie Kober GER
Fraenzi Maegert-Kohli SWI
Marion Kreiner AUT
Heidi Neururer AUT
Claudia Riegler AUT
Nicolien Sauerbreij HOL
Ekaterina Tudigescheva RUS
Alena Zavarzina RUS

So far, my picking a fellow German pretty much jinxed them, but here is hoping Amelie Kober breaks the curse.

Guys, you're not making it easier for the ones that know nothing about this! No bandwagon today? I guess I'll wait until we know the ones who qualify and then choose the hottest among your picks :)

It sounds, from what I gather, that this is a very wide open event with no clear favorites.

Apparently she wasn't! I read Alexa Loo was ranked two-three places higher...and she qualified, so if you're back in the next 30 minutes you should probably switch to her :)

She was JUST off from qualifying for 1/4. Sauerbreij and Kreiner the only one picked who are left in the semis. I'm a little confused as to how they determine the bronze

The semi losers race for bronze - Kreiner vs. Joerg

For the gold - Sauerbreij - Ilyukhina

Of course NOW I start doing good :)

A "Big Final" for the top two and a "Small Final" for 3rd-4th. I imagine based on run times.

Yeah, I've figured it out while watching it. It was weird, they also reran the 5-8 places twice (four times if counting both runs) instead of just using their 1/4 times to classify them. I think each person from the quarters ended up running 10 times.

Thanks for the head's up. Sorry I missed it - I saw from the results this morning that Caroline had missed the cut.

I think I'll get in touch with her the next time I'm in Ottawa and tell her about this, though - I bet she'll get a kick out of it.
