(NOTE: the original plan was for Day 2 to feature the women's Alpine Combined Slalom. The organizers announced yesterday that the event had been postponed. We are switching to the ladies 3000m Speed Skating event instead - sorry to be doing back to back speed skating events, but for medal purposes our options were limited)

Your Day 2 (Sunday, February 14) event is: Ladies 3000m Speed Skating
your Day 2 pick is due no later than: Feb. 14, 1:00 PM PST, 4:00 p.m. US EST

About the event: The Olympic Speed Skating Women's 3000m is an event that takes place on what is described as a long track because a 400m oval is used as opposed to the 111 oval that is used in short track speed skating. The event is timed to one-hundredth of a second with athletes competing in pairs. They skate counter-clockwise around the oval and change lanes once per lap so that both skaters cover the same distance. The winner is the skater with the fastest time after all pairs have skated.

Among the participants*:

Martina Sablikova - Czech Republic
Stephanie Beckert - Germany
Kristina Groves - Canada
Cindy Klassen - Canada
Ireen Wust - Netherlands
Daniela Anschutz - Germany
Clara Hughes - Canada
Maren Haugli - Norway
Diane Valkenburj - Netherlands

* - list is not conclusive, nor are athletes participation confirmed. Our listing of any athletes for Day 2, or at any time during the Olympics, is merely to assist you in researching your pick, and is not meant to be conclusive, or a statement on any particular athlete's chances to medal in the event

Why not biathlon, Moose? I hope you plan to use it at least once! :)

THey've resumed the practice runs for the men's luge, that were postponed after the death yesterday. They've added a seventh training run for each competitor (six is normal, and they were in the middle of the sixth when the accident accurred), and the men are practicing and will be competing from the women's start position. That takes out the first two turns and 30 m of vertical drop. They've also built a high wall after the last turn, where the Georgian slider went off the track.

The men's downhill has been postponed until Monday, as they're expect 20-30 mm (that's about an inch) of rain in Whistler today. Even worse, they're expecting 60 mm in Vancouver, so the women's moguls is likely to be postponed as well.

We will have one biathlon event, Suliso. We wanted to use a womens event for Day 2, since we had used a mens on Day 1. That was why we originally had the Combined Slalom.

Great! I hope you picked pursuit or mass start - those are the most exciting races.

Despite their admiration of unique choices, like our Olympic Committee Chairman Johny Weir's magnificent new costume (see below), residents of Godenland are also never opposed to group... activities, so we'll join everyone else in the choice of Martina Sablikova.

I'm going to stick with the Canadians, and just for old times sake will nominate Cindy Klassen!

Lucas Makowsky did great in finishing 13th in the Men's 5000 today. Lucas went to High School with my younger daughter.

Since the "avoid the bandwagon and pick the one that Moose picked" strategy didn't work on day 1, I'll go with Sablikova on Day 2.
