View Full Version : Olympics Contest: Rules and Points

For the 2010 Winter Olympics, we will highlight one event for each day. At least 24 hours before the event, we will post the event, along with a description of the event, and a list of leading participants in the event.

We will also add three team events over the course of the Olympics. These will be announced as we get closer to the medal games in these events.

You will be picking one athlete in each event. For scoring, the following scale will be used:

Gold 5 points
Silver 3 points
Bronze 1 point

Additionally, you will be able to score bonus points when you achieve 3 of the same medal. If you get 3 gold medals in the course of the Olympics, you get a bonus 5 points. Likewise, 3 silver, or three bronze medals will get you a bonus 5 points. You are only entitled to one bonus for each group of medals (i.e., getting 6 gold medals will still only result in one 5 point bonus).

To make your selection for the event, simply reply in the day's thread for that event. Selections will close at the scheduled start time of the event - as this is a "for fun/no TAT medal" contest, we will not have formal thread lockings at the start the event.

No medals? Wasn't the very idea of medals invented for the Olympics?:)

I remember they were given out for the summer games in 2008 which is why I'm asking.

Originally, we had decided it would not be a medal event, since it was a non-tennis event, Wayland. But it was pointed out that it was a medal event last go round.

I'll take it back to our Olympic Game team (morct, dry and myself), and we will discuss. I'll either have a definitve answer, or perhaps a poll to see what the members feeling on the topic is, sometime tomorrow, if that is acceptable.

The Summer Olympics contest placed a heavy emphasis on tennis which I believe was the reason to award medals.

Thanks for the quick response. I remember four (or maybe six?) of the twenty events we had to select were tennis, but the medals were still decided by a wrestler, steeplechase event, and some woman turkish weightlifter:cheesy:

Either way, thanks for running the contest. I had just assumed it was a medal event like 2008.

Since there was no "Around the World in 28 Days" this year for you to defend your title, I thought this was replacing it as the chance to add to your medal count this February:)

I'm sure I'll be terrible at this (at least until we hit the figure skating where I'm a bit more knowledgable) but I cannot express how excited I am for this contest!

I'm like that with all the other sports, there are those from the previous games where I vaguely remember their names but usually I'm just rooting for the underdogs.

Please, it seem all the contests I'm good at are disappearing from the TAT calendar.

Me too.

I have a vague recollection of us forming our own countries last time, and I see some of us doing that in the selections. If we can't remember what country we're from, is just our screen name okay?

I remember they were given out for the summer games in 2008 which is why I'm asking.

We've discussed this again as an organizing team, and our consensus is that since this is not a tennis event, it should not be a medal event.

TAT medals all have a connection to tennis - the last Olympic contest included. And we want this to be laid back, casual and fun, without it turning into a lot of judging, locking threads for deadlines, and the like, which we'd have to do if it were a medal event.

I hope everyone can live with that decision. We just think it is best for the long running integrity of our medal scoreboard for a non-tennis event like this to remain a non-medal event. I'm planning to pick athletes just for the enjoyment of it, and it looks like some other players feel the same way (forza Italia, Jeanne!) So rather than it turning into a big competition between each other, we'd love for it to be something where we can learn a little about athletes, earn bragging rights between each other, but not have to deal with everything that goes with a TAT contest being a medal event.

I think we'll start to see some separation over the next few days, Morct. With a game like this, there are sureshot picks, but you also start getting into events where there are 3-4 possible winners. I think we'll start seeing more of that as the week progresses.

There might be a alteration in the late part of the schedule, Wayland, so I can't post the last couple of days yet, but here are the events up through next Monday (22nd):

Feb 17: Mens Halfpipe
Feb 18: Women's 15km biathlon

Feb 21: Mens 2 man Bobsleigh

The country pick we used for the summer games lent itself to more strategy since you could only use a country once - probably a little tougher for the winter games since there are fewer countries contending.

There's a couple of events in that list that should split up the rankings even further. I'm sorta surprised at how "safe" most of us have tried to play it thus far. I guess the problem is that taking risks hasn't provided many rewards, if any at all. To be perfectly honest, I'm not motivated to avoid the bandwagons to come :o

Maybe part of it is that I some of us don't know anything about the sports in question and are forced to go with the odds favorite because I we don't know who would be a good risk.

None at all would be it. Catz took a risk with a cross country skiing and got few points more than the rest of us, but that's all... Some of it has to do with the choice of events, though (and allowing to choose in the middle of competition).

For some reason, there is very little that doesn't go as expected at the Olympics. Part of it could be that so many of the events rely on judging, so there are a lot of preconceived notions going in.

Yes, why do it this way? Given the nature of the competition, it's pretty easy to pick the winner in luge/skeleton/bobsleigh once they've already done two of four runs.

So, for Curling, do we pick right before the final, so that everyone is assured of getting some points, or do we pick before the 3rd place game, so that there's a little more risk involved?

What happens if Martin doesn't make the gold medal game? How do you pick then?

ptmcmahon
02-24-2010, 05:51 PM
So, for Curling, do we pick right before the final, so that everyone is assured of getting some points, or do we pick before the 3rd place game, so that there's a little more risk involved?

(Alternate post: I watched some curling yesterday and I still think it sucks, so I'm just going to bandwagon in any case :) )

The men's semifinals are tomorrow afternoon, so we'll know the two teams by tomorrow afternoon...so we will all be assured of 5 or 3 points! Easiest points of the contest.

The Men's Curling Final will be Canada vs. Norway (the team with the funny pants)...Canada still yet to lose at the Olympics.

We are down to 2 leaders now, mmmm8 and Wycombe.

The next few days will be interesting, it would be good to have an outright winner. :D

That bronze that was supposed to be a silver cost me :) Woulda been 7 more points and I wouldn't be officially out of contention...that's what I get for going against bandwagons I guess! Maybe I can still get all 3 bonuses. I think if we get all 3 bonuses it should be a bonus of...ummm...maybe one thousand points? ;)

morct

Don't forget there is a bonus for each group of 3 medals of the same colour, but it is only awarded once for each category........

Thx for the update, morct! And I hope we have an outright winner. If we have a tie, can we have those who are tied go ice fishing? Whoever catches the biggest whatever in 24 hours time in a small hut over a small hole somewhere on a large sheet of ice wins...? :p

I have been looking for a bronze medal for the past few days especially on the women's bobsled but 4th place is what the driver got.

Gulags were in Siberia. Sochi is on the Black Sea. Typical American lack of geographical knowledge

That said, NYC kind of looks like a rat-infested Gulag at the moment.
