your Day 1 (Saturday, February 13) event is: Mens 5000m Speed Skating

your Day 1 pick is due no later than: Feb. 13, 12:00 PM PST, 3:00 p.m. US EST

About the event: Speed skating is an event in which competitors race each other over a certain distance on ice skates. The Olympic Speed Skating Men's 5,000m is an event that takes place on what is described as a long track because a 400m oval is used as opposed to the 111 oval that is used in short track speed skating. The event is timed to one-hundredth of a second with athletes competing in pairs. They skate counter-clockwise around the oval and change lanes once per lap so that both skaters cover the same distance. The winner is the skater with the fastest time after all pairs have skated.

Expected participants*:

Havard Bokko
Shani Davis
Bob de Jong
Enrico Fabris
Sverre Haugli
Chad Hedrick
Sven Kramer
Lucas Macowsky
Trevor Marsicano
Ivan Skobrev
Carl Verheijen

* - list is not conclusive, nor are athletes participation confirmed. Our listing of any athletes for Day 1, or at any time during the Olympics, is merely to assist you in researching your pick, and is not meant to be conclusive, or a statement on any particular athlete's chances to medal in the event :)

You all are way too quick - I am still adding participants!

(As for the Svenwagon: We deliberately made the first couple of days easier events to get things started - they will get more difficult as the Olympics progress).

LOL.........sorry Moose.

No problem, Omega. To be honest, I appreciate your enthusiasm.

I had hoped to have this up yesterday, because I know some people wanted to play, but as you might have seen if you have been following our "East Coasties" storm thread, my life has been turned upside down with 4+ feet of snow in the last ocuple of days.

Hey, thanks for the nostalgia trip, Kirkus. The "Redmond" on that map was home for 25 years. And many a marvelous meal was eaten in Kirkland. Good restaurant place.

I promised myself I would not get caught up in the friggin VANOC Olympic hype. Of course we've had to bail out the province of Saskatchewan at the last minute to provide cultural content for our dandy Pavilion.

But CRAP - it's the Olympics and it's our show.

So - I don't care about the Contest - I'm going for the Canucks all the way [but dammit - you better have curling on your list!]

So for Day 1 - it's gotta be my fellow Reginan Lucas Makowsky [Moose - please note correct spelling !!]

If he wins Imma give him a free ticket to the Symphony!

All right, then.

Since I know nothing about winter sports, I'll just choose randomyl from whatever you guys choose.
I'll avoid the bandwagon, so, Moose, you better be right about your pick (and i like the name, too): Havard Bokko for me.

Well, I missed that little piece of info. My pick was totally non-religious and shall remain that way.

There are just so many places to go with this. But I'm going to respect the religious among us and zip it.
