I've always loved the Winter Olympics and managed to set aside time to watch most of it. And now you add contests!!!! This is bliss!

Zuzanaland is a climate of eternal sunshine, but if there is another gold to be won, that fair country shall compete.

We're picking Switzerland for doubles again, btw.

Out of curiousity...why is this in the Tennis RPB?

And here's a quirky fact: Canada have never won a gold medal while hosting an Olympics before (summer in Montreal, winter in Calgary.)

We've never held Olympics here...too tiny.

But we've had Commonwealth Games, Auckland: 1950 (British Empire Games) - 10 Golds, and again in 1990 - 17 Golds, Christchurch: 1974 (British Commomwealth Games) - 9 Golds.

Not sure of our chances in Canada but they're dedicating four sports channels to it and have been advertising it for months!

To keep you guys on your toes? ;)

Alternate Post: Because quite a few of our 'other' contests are tennis-ish. :)

My lone medal is from the Beijing Games.

Although my country of Verdantia is best know for its lush green valleys, the mountainous region receives its fair share of snow and is prepared to compete in the 2010 Winter Games. :)

Maybe if you totally switched allegiance and started cheering for Fed he might actually lose.

Interesting thought :ponder: That my own persona is a big enough of a jinx...

Still, I fear I could enter in seizures if I do.

Goldenland is super-excited for the upcoming winter games, as they will feature a competition in our national pasttime, ice dancing!!! Our sports minister HFPY and mascot Richard Simmons are always happy for an easy score!

His Fabulousness Pierre-Yves. Let's say it's a completely fictional character who is not at all based on any individual that resembles a certain 2010 Australian Open Runner-Up's ex-husband.

He used to be a quite frequent visitor around these parts but has not been seen much since late 2007, clearly busy with spending the divorce money Goldenland state duties.

So that means...one of the two?

I like our men's teams chances...Kevin Martin has had a super strong team the last few years. An interesting side note, his third John Morris was skipping his own team that almost qualified for the last Olympics - they won the round robin portion, but lost out in the playoffs.

The women's team has been a fairly strong one in the last few years too, so I would be surprised if at least one of them didn't win gold.

Curling!! Yes!!! That whole "sport" makes about as much sense to me as televised poker, but I LOVE watching it. Also looking forward to explaining it to MiniKoffie. :D

Got a couple of hours? :p

Seriously, though. If you're familiar with lawn bowls, then most of that logic applies to curling. Add to that some broom specialists and a polished piece of rock, and you're almost there in the understanding department ;) :cheesy:

Shuffleboard on ice basically, where the object is to be closest to the center of the rings - only one team scores, and you score all of yours that are closer than any of your opponents. Each team gets 8 rocks per "end" and there are 10 ends per game. Easy to understand when you watch a little, although the strategy can get quite complex.

I think I posted this before when it happened last year, but maybe the greatest curling shot I've ever seen:

1kE5QzOprns

PS He's NOT our Olympic representitive - Kevin Martin beat him in the Final. Would've been a good story too as his brother (the one clapping in the crowd) won gold at the last Olympics with a team from Newfoundland :)

Curling looks silly, but it's very hypnotic. I remember watching it mostly on the Canadian channel we got in on basic cable growing up.

Growing up in Northern Minnesota, curling was part of our gym class in the winter. My high school had its own curling rink.

:cheesy: this is what eurosport does to you. They show a sport you have never even heard of and while you switch the channel the first 5 times it is on, one time sooner or later you stay with it. And suddenly, you are captivated by Curling. Or Snooker. Or (as I am ashamed to admitt: ) Darts.

Hopefully, all the rules, and scoring will be posted by the endo f the day. This time around, you will be picking individual/team winners, not picking by country.

The first event in our contest is Mens 5000m speed skating. The first three days events that you will be picking from, if you want to start figuring out your picks:

2.13: Mens 5000m Speed Skating
2.14: Womens Alpine Skiing Super Combined Slalom
2.15: Men's 15km cross country skiing

In Canada, our SI preview magazine had Crosby on the front. (Of course I heard Vonn may be featured prominently in the "next" one as well.)
