Best case scenario has 48 people advancing to the 2nd QF pick on Day 10. Worst case, 31. Either way, we lose a bunch of people today.

Cilic's 40 advance. So, we will either have 48, if Nadal wins, or 46, if Murray wins.

Still 46 going. Way to go, all. And to think I was eliminated for a no-pick (made my women's pick at home at breakfast (only to discover that I'd lost the previous day already) and never realized the rest of the day that I hadn't made a men's pick at the same time.)

And down to 15. Impressive, when compared to the women's side.

While I think who would win the tourney was (and still is) a question mark, Ponchi, there have note been a lot of huge upsets at key stages in the tourney, which makes it easier for people to advance. The men, overall, played closer to their seeding than the ladies did, which in part accounts for 15 people getting to the semis.

How many folks entered again at the beginning of the tourney?

We began with 385 players, TennisRone. So for you, and the other 14 remaining players to get to this point is outstanding. You have done better than about 96% of everyone who entered the game.

Congrats to the survivors especially the Tsonga pickers. Gutsy call!

Moose
01-27-2010, 07:53 AM
If I have this correct:

All 15 of our remaining players have used Cilic
13 of our 15 remaining have used Tsonga
7 of 15 have used Federer
1 of 15 have used Murray

That's going to make the semi and the final pick very interesting.

Pretty proud of my Tsonga pick, saving him for the quarters instead of using him earlier. Still got Murray and Federer left, but the question is, who is winning this thing?

Happy to be in the last 15!

If I'm reading it right:

10 of the 15 left can beat the draw.

Of those 10:

8 of those have Murray and Federer left

2 have Murray and Tsonga left

I second AnneP: Thanks to shtexas and all the other organizers and moderators.

In some ways, I'm glad I got eliminated (I picked Djoko) rather than having to commit suicide (I've already picked Cilic and Murray), which I at latest I would have had to do by the finals.

Good luck to those who are still in it!!!

You're welcome, everyone! Thanks for the shout out!

The semis thread is now closed. 14 people left as one of the 15 who survived to this point had no one to pick.

The breakdown:

11 Murray
2 Federer
1 Tsonga

But, more importantly:

Of the 8 who have saved both Federer and Murray -

6 went with Murray now, saving Federer for the final
2 went with Federer now, saving Murray for the final

Of the 2 who have saved both Murray and Tsonga -

1 went with Murray today, saving Tsonga for the final
1 went with Tsonga today, saving Murray for the final

The other 4 had only one option left, and they all took him (Murray).

Survivors: Remember to come back after the men's semis to make your final choice official. There will also be tiebreaker instructions. All winners will get a medal in their "awards showcase", but, this time, SI has a prize for one winner. Therefore, we will have a tiebreaker. Stay tuned!

Good luck, and great job!

shtexas

And before someone asks, in the unlikely event Tsonga and Cilic win their semis, Charlie wins because he is the only one to get his semifinal pick correct (even though he cannot beat the draw).

Yes, that was particularly dopey, especially since, as you indelicately point out, I ruminated all day long before summoning up the courage to shoot myself in the foot.;) In the end it wouldn't have mattered, I realise, since I would've picked Fed if it had occurred to me I couldnt have Tsonga. Then (being British; and even half Scot, I might add;)) I would have picked Murray for the semis and had no available pick for the final. Such are the ways of the sharks who swim in the suicide pool. Yer live and learn. 'Twas my first time.

Thanks to all the compilers/moderators for all the hard work.

Off to the losers lounge I go, where, rumour has it, there is a bottle of Bombay waiting patiently, with my name on it:)

Update:

If Federer wins the semifinal, we will have a tiebreaker involving 8 people - six holding Federer to win the title and two holding Murray to win. All eight will need to post their final pick when the thread goes up, and all eight will need to follow the tiebreaker procedure that will be listed therein. If Fed wins, six receive medals, but the SI prize will be decided among them by the tiebreaker. If Murray wins, both Murray pickers will receive medals, but the prize will be decided among the two of them using the tiebreaker.

If Tsonga wins the semifinal, there will be no tiebreaker - just a final pick in the day 14 thread, when it goes up. This is because a Tsonga win leaves only Charlie, who has Tsonga in the semis, saving Murray for the title, and TennisRone, who had Murray in the semis, saving Tsonga for the title. Therefore, only one will win.

Good luck to all!
