Welcome again all to the 2010 Women's Australian Open Suicide Pool. Congratulations to the 355 of you (not a new record) who got your Day 1 picks in and are ready to play. In the posts below, you can follow your progress as the tournament goes on, and we encourage you to check here before making picks to ensure you don't duplicate a pick, since a pick that duplicates any choice you've made previously cannot be used.

In this thread you will also find my tried-and-true (and sometimes right!) analyses of the day's matchups based on the choices made by the contest's participants. I do hope you enjoy them.

Also, if you feel we've made an error, please let us know, preferably via PM.

Finally, as always, if you're red, you're... well, probably blue.

Before the analyses begin, thanks to tobiasfunke for leaving me a cool note in the picks thread saying that she was looking forward to my, well let's call them "opinions" for the time being.

And they are back!

Out of a possible 64 players to choose from, 34 received at least one vote. This means we're guaranteed to lose at least two players today. And if my prognostications turn out the way I say, we'll lose many many more.

Today's BotD (Bandwagon of the Day) is...

Nadia Petrova!

Nadia Petrova (56) - Ah yes, Nadia. We're all counting on you, dear. All 56 of us. None of your losing-a-set-and-a-break-lead-to-Melanie-Oudin antics this time around, okay?! I didn't even pick her, actually, but she should have no problem against Gallovits, right? RIGHT?

Close but no cigar:

Sorana Cirstea (46) - Boy is this group gonna be upset when they get knocked out. Rogowska has fought some players who are much better than Cirstea very tightly in Grand Slams. Combine that with a distinct home court advantage, and *CRASH*

And coming in third is:

Yanina Wickmayer (35) - You break the top 20, get some stupid charges thrown at you, get your wildcard to a Grand Slam denied (cause you know, you're not a former Grand Slam champion, or an Australian, I guess), win a tournament the week before the Slam starts, almost lose in the first round of qualifying to tennis Titan Yurika Sema (who?) before slaughtering your way into the main draw, only to be put in the quarter from Hades (or is it Haiti? Let's not ask Pat Robertson) potentially playing a seed in round two. Boy, does it blow to be you. On the bright side, you should get the legions of fans behind you into day two of the TaT SP!

And everyone else:

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (32) - Plays another Anastasi(j)a in Sevastova, a Latvian (Lett?). Um, okay, why not?

Flavia Pennetta (23) - Got crushed by Wickmayer last week and draws her in round two this week. What luck! We're pretty confident she'll get by Chaks (that's a sentence we wouldn't have said a couple years ago), but this quarter of the draw will likely be much too much for her.

Alona Bondarenko (20) - Why God, why?! For the love of all that is holy why have so many people chosen a Bondarenko? I don't care one iota that she just won a tournament. Actually, I think that will prove to be detrimental. These people are also picking against qualifiers, so if they lose, they'll have deserved it.

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez (19) - Serena's BFF (give her a hand! Ouch. Two bad'ns in a row... Haha. Onward!) is seeded. And coming off a great Hopman Cup. And against somebody I know nothing about. This is my “can't lose” pick of the day.

Timea Bacsinszky (15) - The sheer amount of people who have picked the Swiss woman surprises me. I give this match against Meusberger even odds.

Dominika Cibulkova (14) - The feisty little Slovak could meet Sharapova early, and as I was reminded by mmmm8... Cibulkova is not the person you want to be playing if you're having serving issues. She also lost only two games to Maria at the French last year. That's all I'm sayin'.

Kateryna Bondarenko (14) - See Bondarenko, Alona (first sentence).

Elena Dementieva (10, as in 10 people I hate) - I have no words.

Marion Bartoli (8) - Could do some real damage in what could be a weak section of the draw, so the question that may need to be asked is: too early?

Justine Henin (8) - Yes! I just love the enthusiasm of these brave few who think she won't make it past Elena in the next round. Cheers!

Sara Errani (6) - One person has picked against this match, hoping that Errani's (hardcourt) skills can't quite yet pay all the bills.

Virginie Razzano (6) - The 18th seed (WTF?!) has not been playing like a top 40 player for a while now, and I don't know that I trust her to get past upset specialist Makarova.

Kaia Kanepi (5) - Had just a horrible finish to last season, mostly due to injuries, but I like her against Chan.

Sesil Karatantcheva (4) - Kazakhstan's latest hundred-thousand-dollar purchase will hope to kick the ass off her opponent, Tamarine Tanasugarn. Still, some good odds of landing a good swift one, methinks.

Aravane Rezai (4) - The Frenchwoman has had quite a good past few months, so of course she was rewarded by drawing the quarter from hell. We like her to get by shade-of-her-former-self Mirza before eventually falling to Kuznetsova.

Tamarine Tanasugarn (4) - What?! It's not the grass court season yet?! What is she even doing here?! Who let her out??!!

Jie Zheng (4) - Zheng versus Peng. Sounds like the gold medal match at the Beijing Olympics Table Tennis venue.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld (3) - Tough call here against Vinci, who had a nice year last year, though she definitely doesn't favor the hard courts.

Patricia Mayr (3) - I cannot, under pain of a slow, torturous death, say anything against Miss Mayr. Therefore, she will obviously win, and look pretty doing it. Is that good enough, Patricia? No? Oh no.

Olga Govortsova (2) - Yeah, I'll admit it: I have no idea. She plays Kerber, a qualifier. From Germany. Govortsova plays for Belarus. I think they both play tennis. Aight, done stalling.

Jelena Jankovic (2) - So soon? So sad.

Sandra Zahlavova (2) - Zahlavova the lesser is against a wildcard/delicious hot beverage. We have picks on both sides of this one.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova (2) - Ahhh there's Zahlavovas everywhere! Plays a Russian qualifier, so this pick is at your own peril.

And the cheese stands alone:

Elena Baltacha - I hope this happens! Has a nice draw in random Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier.

Polona Hercog - Go Polona! A grand pick.

Svetlana Kuznetsova - She's the top seed in her section, but at least one person feels she will not come out the winner in a very tough section of the draw. A defeat to Clijsters, perhaps?

Yvonne Meusberger - What a tremendous pick. Honestly, it can't go wrong. I've done such a good job, I don't even have to worry about paying attention to this match and I can make my day 2 pick, cause there's no way I lose. Ah, if only... Actually, I just wanted to be different.

Katie O'Brien - Hmm. I wasn't aware there was a direct entry British woman. Oh well, live and learn. On the opposite side of the net, though, is an angry Patricia Mayr. O'Brien may want to just roll over and play dead.

Maria Sharapova - Could be a great surprise, could be a great disappointment. I guess we'll find out.

Coco Vandeweghe - See her opponent above.

Klara Zakopalova - Could be a decent pick, since Errani fares better on the clay, but we haven't seen much from the old Koukalova tree recently, so it will be interesting to see how this match goes.

Best of luck to you all!

I actually look forward to reading your analysis after every round too just so you know :cheesy: Of course now I realize you hate me because I chose Dementieva! But I have a great excuse. I follow a strange philosophy where I usually pick against players I personally like. That way, regardless of whether they win or lose, I get to look on the "bright side"--yay (1) I live another day in the SP or (2) one of my favorite players won!

I guess I'm just not strong enough to withstand total rejection. I need some small consolation :D

I'm not sure where to put this so I'll try here.

Looking at all the Peer picks in the day 2 thread makes me feel like a crazy person because I don't see her on the day 2 schedule. In fact, I don't see anyone in the Azarenka, Wozniacki or Hantuchova section on the schedule of play. Am I not seeing things?

Just look at the ATP and WTA draws and OOP. ATP will be completed with round 1 today while 14 first round matches in the WTA including names mentioned will be played on Day 3 according to OOP. However, I believe for SP that you can still choose any of those 14 matches for your pick today because it is part of the 32 matches listed.

Lots of people still waiting on their Day 1 picks to finish, but there are plenty of choices today, nonetheless. We'll see how "accurate" my Day 1 "predictions" ended up being, but for now:

Today's BotD is...

Carla Suarez Navarro!

Carla Suarez Navarro (46) - Fancy Nancy upset Venus Williams en route to a quarterfinal finish here last year and just snuck in as the 32nd seed this year, but for the life of me I don't know what she's done since. Nice draw against Morita, though, and if Nancy meets Serena in round three, it will NOT be a repeat of last year.

Close, but no cigar:

Gisela Dulko (40) - Legs is a popular pick, and she did take out Sharapova in last year's Wimbledon, but people, she drew a battle-tested qualifier! And Dulko's not exactly the most consistent person ever, so… well let's just say that you might be right. And you might not.

And show:

Shahar Peer (39) - A pretty resurgent Peer gets a nice draw and could really do some damage.

And all the rest:

Agnes Szavay (27) - We saw shades of the former top-30 player at last year's Roland Garros, and she should be able to get by Dubois, who hopes to fare better than Tetreault did last night.

No Pick (20) - Given this draw, it's a good, unarguable pick.

Samantha Stosur (18) - Plays a qualifier who I've not heard of, so the only real danger in this pick is if Stosur is really finding her feet, she can go far.

Sabine Lisicki (16) - The Smiling German will find her way into round two quite nicely. Huzzah!

Ana Ivanovic (14) - I'll be honest. I'll really be rooting for Shenay Perry in this one. Equal parts because I like her and don't really like Squeaks. We'll see if she can girly-twirl-fist-pump-ADJE! her way into round 2.

Andrea Petkovic (14) - Two years ago, she retired in the first game of her first match here. Last year she beat fellow German Woerle in a long match to reach the second round. This year, she could easily reach the third round.

Iveta Benesova (12) - A solid choice for this match, but with neither Zvonareva nor Ivanovic lighting up the courts, the Czech may surpass expectations.

Petra Kvitova (12) - Has drawn someone three times her age in Jill Craybas. Probably will win which will probably make me sad.

Sybille Bammer (9) - Better pray it's not windy, or that ball toss is gonna be all over the place. Faces Spaniard Parra Santonja who knocked about 6 million people out of last year's Wimbledon pool by upsetting Tammy T. On grass. Obviously, we can't count APS out in these early rounds.

Melinda Czink (9) - Will hope that her game is galvanized enough (Anyone get it? Not that it's good…) to take out Voegele who has a powerful, if erratic game.

Daniela Hantuchova (9) - Almost-one-time-finalist Hantuchova has drawn Kutuzova, of whom the words "Watch out for her in the future!" have been uttered for about six years. Okay, maybe not that long, but I'm still waiting for the talent materialization. Dani in 2.

Anabel Medina Garrigues (9) - Is anyone from TaT going to be there? If so, Sprem in 2. If not, AMG in 2.

Agnieszka Radwanska (7) - Shouldn't be too troubled by German Malek, though if I recall, I said the same thing about her matchup against Kateryna Bondarenko here last year…

Elena Vesnina (7) - She's been really disappointing so far this season, so any wins here would be somewhat of a (albeit welcome) surprise. Faces *thwack* wait for it… wait for it… waaaaaaaait for iiiiiiiit… *grunt*

Na Li (5) - She's coming off her best-ever Grand Slam showing at last year's US Open and probably won't be troubled until she meets Dane Wozniacki.

Alicia Molik (5) - This probably won't be a popular assessment (but really, when do I ever care?), but I think Molik might have some trouble finding her legs. Home crowd will help her (as does the draw of Coin), but it might be a tough day out.

Melanie Oudin (5) - Not sure I BELIEVE yet, but this could be a great pick, since she draws A Rad in the next round, who killed her at Wimby last year.

Victoria Azarenka (2) - Much too early. She's likely to come out of her quarterfinal and meet Serena. So yes, she'll get by Cohen-Aloro, but it may prove to be bad to have used her already.

Kimiko Date Krumm (2) - Greta Arn and Grandma Jill's great-grandma has had a better start to the season than a lot of others, and at 84 years of age, it looks like she checked the box for the pro tournament and not the senior invitational, but that still might not stop her from taking out Shvedova. (But I doubt it.)

Vera Zvonareva (2) - I sure hope her ankle's okay.

One is the loneliest number...

Akgul Amanmuradova - There's gonna be about 13 feet of fun on court between Akgul and opponent Barrois, whose slice backhand could easily trouble the large Uzbek.

Sofia Arvidsson - Former top-30 Swede had to qualify but will meet her match in big-hitting Jarmila Groth. We have exactly one pick on both sides of this match.

Alberta Brianti - Another amazing pick. I'm just going to sit back, watch her victory, and choose my next pick. Too bad no one else got on the train! (Remember Meusberger/Bacsinszky?)

Kai-Chan Chang - I know absolutely nothing about her, except that I really don't expect her to beat Benesova.

Jill Craybas - Grandma Jill! The TaT favorite has a sole supporter, and she's gonna need all the support she can get against the tricky lefty Kvitova. Plus, her year's already been dismal, so she has that working against her.

Casey Dellacqua - I like Dellacqua a lot, so I hope I'm right when I say that I think she'll win.

Jarmila Groth - GRAWTH!

Varvara Lepchenko - Someone dared pick against my pick! Does this person suffer the wrath of the Bacsinszkys yesterday? Or vanquish the analysis foe from the contest? Stay tuned!

Francesca Schiavone - Skeevy Wonder has a tough draw in Cornet, whose ranking will plummet even more if she can't find a way to win this. Could be close, depending on which Alizé shows up.

Good luck everyone!

Beau's Breakdown - Day 3

(Thanks to good friend Danielle for the inspiration for the title!)

The randomness of the draw scared several people away from making any picks today, and those who did voted overwhelmingly on one side.

Today's Atlas-Weight-of-the-Day is...

Aravane Rezai!

Yes, Aravane Rezai (94). Whew. That's a large weight on her sequined/lamé shoulders. Saw Kerber play a bit against Govortsova and she was really solid, so it will be up to Rezai to control her firepower and make it count.

Not even close, but still getting a ton of votes is:

Nadia Petrova (50) - Had the early lead in bandwagoners, but came up a little lame, probably because of the 2394829 people who picked her in round one, already.

And third, undeterred:

Kateryna Bondarenko (28) - On paper, this is even a better matchup than Alona's. But Baltacha has game from what I've seen.

And all the rest!

No Pick (18) - A gutsy choice.

Marion Bartoli (17) - She's found herself in a weak quarter due to the seeds around her bowing out, so she has a likely fourth round rematch with Jankovic. Oh yeah, and she wins this one.

Alona Bondarenko (16) - I don't know a ton about her opponent, Hercog, except that she's got game. This being said, even I have to admit that A Bond has been playing well as of late, and if it were anyone but the Bondarenkos, I'd say it were in the bag. But it's not.

Alisa Kleybanova (14) - Miss Whiplash-of-the-Neck avenged her loss to Aussie Jelena, but Cirstea played really well in the two sets she won last night, so I don't know that Alisa will necessarily win this one.

Maria Kirilenko (11) - Makiri finally did something to make me take notice. As such, I hope she wins.

Jelena Jankovic (7) - Gets picks for the second straight round. Confident of her, we're not, apparently.

Sara Errani (2) - She's going to find Makarova tough to beat.

Ekaterina Makarova (2) - I feel she's likely to follow up the "upset" of "Razzano" with a convincing win today over "Errani".

Roberta Vinci (2) - A third outstanding pick of mine. No worries whatsoever. Time to think about my Day 4 choice!

The Lone Rangers:

Polona Hercog - Go Polona!

Kaia Kanepi - Someone was almost goaded into choosing her; this pick is contrarian to the many many Petrovas. You're gonna need a lot of luck, Kaia, since it looks as though St. Nadia is going to lead her flock to safety.

Vania King - Really showed us something yesterday to rally to beat Cibulkova. Her rewarded is Vinci, another non-seeded player, who prefers clay. King could win it, but given the results of the past year or so, Vinci will take it.

Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez - Can she follow up the double bagel in the first round with a convincing win here?

Dinara Safina - Uh, yeah.

Jie Zheng - Made a lot of people concerned when she got bageled in her first set of the tournament against compatriot Peng. Now she's going to go for the upset against an opponent who double bageled her opponent in her first match. A ballsy pick, to be sure.

Best of luck, everyone!

Not sure who to contact but my Day 3 pick is showing as Bartoli in the Picks Thread but it was really Maria Kirilenko (you can check the post history for my account -- Bonneau -- to validate).

Thanks,

Between Day 2 matches that had to finish and all the Day 3 matches and all the no picks, we lost an astounding 153 competitors today. This leaves us with 113 still alive.

I had Kirilenko but took Rezai based on (a) Rezai performance against S Williams at Sydney and (b) Kirilenko may have been emotionally exhausted after defeating Sharapova and Andreev losing to Federer in where Andreev had 3 set points on his serve in the third set

There's not going to be a full Beau Breakdown today (I know, I know), but I will fill you in right now on the overview:

14 different players (A Radwanska, Azarenka, Dellacqua, Hantuchova, Ivanovic, Li, Lisicki, Peer, Petkovic, Schiavone, Sprem, Stosur, Suarez Navarro, Zvonareva) have at least one person who's picked them.

We're still waiting for nine people to make their selections.

There's a pretty even distribution, but Sabine Lisicki is the BotD with, at the moment, a full 10 more riders than the nearest competitors: Schiavone and Stosur.

There are two matches with picks on both sides of them:

Sprem/Dellacqua (2 Sprem, 1 Dellacqua) and
Suarez Navarro/Petkovic (10 CSN, 2 Petkovic)

Sadly for the CSN pickers, I picked Petkovic, so you're all going to lose. Toodles!

Okay all, here is the brief update (I was out to dinner. Not lunch. At least not at the moment ;))

Even though Snidely attempted to avoid the bandwagon, he ended up onto the biggest one:

Kuznetsova 32

The others:

Wickmayer 23
Kirilenko 8
Bartoli 4
Jankovic 4 (out)
Safina 2 (through)
No pick 1 (out :cheesy:)

We started the day with 74, lost one to a no pick, and so far four to Jankovic, so we have 69 at the moment. (Also, the Safinas may very well end up without a pick, or perhaps the tons of people who've chosen A Bond.)

The fact that no one's used her could definitely help. The ones who really have to watch their picks are the ones who've used both Petrova and Kuznetsova (and there're a couple who've used Wickmayer, as well!)

I've used up Petrova, Kuznetsova, and Wickmayer, so it's looking like I'm going to have to try to pick the winner of the Bondarenko match AND pray that Henin beats Wickmayer, and the winner of Petrova/Kuznetsova for the picks in this bottom half to work out.

On the bright side, congratulations to Petrova and Zheng for really upsetting this part of the draw. (I would say A-Bond as well, but I consider Jelena pretty unrealiable, just in general, as a pick).

Even I survive till tomorrow and have to pick between A-Bond/Zheng, I don't really think any of the matches look easy to pick between. I could easily see Wickmayer, Petrova, or Makiri upsetting the seeds they're playing.
